Overcoming Your Quit

Everyone's experienced it. It can be very strong, even overpowering. Couch potatoes experience it, but experienced exercise gurus experience it too. It's that little voice in your head telling you to stop. Scientists call it "inner speech" or "thought chatter." I call it a nuisance.  Steve Taylor Ph.D.  in a Phycology  Today article , says that "real thinking is when we consciously use powers of reason and logic to evaluate different options, deliberate over problems, decisions,...

TrueEnergy Sock Review

Back in the spring, TrueEnergy sent me a pair of their low cut socks to test out. With the pandemic in full force and my fitness studio shut down by the state, my mind was a bit distracted. The other day, I realized I had not posted my experience with the socks. I've been wearing them on just about all of my runs since I received them in early May. At first it was for the sole purpose of testing them out for a review, but then I realized they were becoming my go-to socks for my runs, everyday we...

Don't Forget To Shop Local

Small Business Saturday is in November, but you don't have to wait until one special day to support local businesses. Today while buying my morning coffee, I realized I was basically a small-business billboard today. Almost everything I was wearing was purchased locally and I myself am the owner of a small business. It's easy to be lured to the big box stores or the online giants, but small business is a vital part of the local economy. Many small business invest back into the local communi...

Why Do You Run?

It's hard to believe I've been running for 35 years. I known so many people over the years who have tested the running waters, and have left the sport for one reason or another. Of course my job as a running coach keeps in running, but I have 25 years of running under my belt when I wasn't a coach. So what's kept me running?  Sure, I run for the health benefits. Sure, I run to help keep my weight in check. Sure, I run to help keep my 54-year-old self in shape. But I'm not so sure those are...

Stepping Out of Your Box

A brand new year, 2019 is just a couple days away. For many, a new year is a time for resolutions and a fresh start. Resolutions are great, but only if you follow-through with them. More often than not, resolutions are so lofty and unattainable from the get-go that the individual who set them quickly gets discouraged and quits.  My resolutions tend to be challenging, but not unattainable. I learned a log time ago, that If I have too many goals, I'm going to get discouraged when I realize ...

Run to the Top Podcast: The Value of a Coach with RunnerDude Thad McLaurin

Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with Stephanie Atwood, the host of the Run to the Top podcast on RunnersConnect.net. Stepnice wanted to chat about the vaule of having a Run Coach. So I said sure! Stephanie is currently located in Mexico, that made the interview kind of cool too, knowing we were talking Running across two countries.  We mainly talked about the value of a run coach, but we also hit several other running related topics. When you have a chance, I hope you'll ...

The New Normal: Running Over 50

53 And Feeling Good! It's funny how age sneaks up on you. I've been running for almost 35 years (man that in itself makes me feel old). Started when I was a college kid in 1984.  Really didnt' get serious about trying to set PRs until my early 40s. Set my 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Marathon PRs when I was 42.When you're in your 20s, the 40s seem really old. When you're in your 40s you realize that's not really old. You actually realize that you can be pretty competitive, even if it's jus...

There Is a Method To His Madness: Creating a RunTheBoro Route

If you've been participating in the recent RunTheBoro Saturday runs, you may have wonderes (and  some of you have even asked me)  why are there so many turns in the runs? Why so many hills? Why did we go in this neighborhood or that neighborhood. How do you make the routes? These are all excellent questions. Along with lots of coffee and lots of time, I do have some guiding principles when I create the RunTheBoro routes. Sharing HistoryExploring NeighborhoodsSharing Art and Cultu...

A Conversation With My Camelbak

Funny how some runs are very uneventful while others become quite memorable. Today's was quite a memorable one. Beside, the loose pit bull I made friends with by turning and running in the other direction, the drug deal I witnessed, taking a picture of two cyclists (one from Colorado and one from Virgina) that asked me if I'd mind taking a pic of them (they referred to me as "Nice Guy"),  and seeing fellow runner and friend Amanda Coble at Lebauer Park and a drive-by honking from Lisa Garrison, ...

If The Shoe Fits

Finding the right running shoe can be a daunting task. Take myself for example. My favorite Hoka, "Huaka" was discontinued. I was at a loss. Several of the other Hoka models just didn't seem to work for my feet. I had previously run in the Altra Paradigm, so I tried that again. But, Altra did something to the sizing and my orthodic no longer worked in the Paradigm. So for about a year, I struggled to find a new long run shoe. Finally, I discovered that the Altra Bondi 5 worked for me. I'm now on...

Let's Cut to the "Chafe"

"Chafe." There, I said it. One of those words, no body likes. As soon as you hear it, you immediately have a reference point in your memory of an oh-so painful run where you ended up waddling back to you car or even worse a blood curdling Psycho shower scene where you screamed at the top of your lungs during a post long-run shower, only to have your entire family running to your aide for sure thinking you've fallen in the shower or a snake has crawled in with you.Almost every runner has experien...

Marathon To-Do List

If you're in the heat of marathon training, you're probably 100% focused on your workouts. There's another side to preparing for a marathon that often gets overlooked. I'm talking about getting to your race destination. I'm currently training for my 17th marathon and  I've learned a few things along the way that have helped me out on race day. Marathon Trip To-Do List 1. Book your room! Marathons are getting larger and larger and it's getting harder and harder to find a room (especially ...

Running Shorts Interviews RunnerDude

I'm usually the one doing the interview, but turnabout is fair play. This week, Eddie Wooten, the senior sports editor of the News and Record and host of the running blog, Running Shorts interviewed me for the anniversary of the blogs 5th year of the Runners Profile series where Eddie features a different local runner. Over the past 5 years, Eddie's featured 263 runners! It was great taking time to chat with another fellow runner. Eddie's blog, Running Shorts has become a great center point for ...

Soapbox: Fitness Apps Are Great, But...

Fitness and nutrition apps are a great way to keep track of your exercise and eating, but be careful with the nutrition info they provide. More than not, they set caloric goals way too low to sustain yoru activity level. The best advice and guidance will come from a nutritionist or a registered dietition. [Author: RunnerDude]

Taking That Leap

I wanted to be an architect like Mr. Brady. This morning I Facebook messaged with a friend who was telling me he was miserable in his current job. I told him to think about what was worse, being safe in his current job but miserable, or (albeit scary) taking a leap of faith and make a change and do what he really wanted to do. It made me reflect on my own past decisions. When someone asked me as a kid what I wanted to do when I grew up, I'd usually say I wanted to be an architect. I think ...

Gu or Not To Gu, That is the Question

For this round of race training, I have quite a few runners new to training for the half-marathon and full-marathon distance. I love working with newbies to distance racing. They have so many questions and are so eager to learn. One question that has surfaced over and over during this training cycle is, "What about GU? Should I be using sports gels? When should I use them? Each of my runners gets a training packet that's several pages long and in that packet is information on and "rules of thumb"...

Need a Running Coach?

I hear it all the time..."I'm not good enough to have a running coach." I usually respond with, do you have a personal trainer?" Answer: "Yes."It's pretty common for individuals to think it's perfectly normal to have a personal fitness trainer, but then to think that only the elite or professional athletes need a running coach. Coach...Trainer....it's all semantics."Coach" usually refers to someone training athletes in a specific sports field, be it football, baseball, soccer, swimming, running,...
