It seems to echo the movie’s main case in which a man claims demonic…Read more...

‘It’s A Ghost Town Out Here’: South Lake Tahoe Beaches Eerily Barren Over Memorial Day Weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (CBS13) — While some area beaches were packed this weekend, one of the most popular was barren. South Lake Tahoe’s controversial travel ban was a Memorial Day bust for businesses. “This is just kind of crazy to look around and see this,” said Jared Dayton, who lives nearby. The summer kickoff they depend on was instead a bunch of empty tables and benches. “It’s a ghost town out here. Normally this beach behind me would be packed,” said Ryan Brown, a dockhand for Ski Run. On Memo...

Sierra Canyon boys basketball makes it looks easy in first round of CIF State playoffs

CHATSWORTH >> It was business as usual for Sierra Canyon’s boys basketball team. For two straight games, the Trailblazers have stormed out to commanding leads that have set a pace the opposition couldn’t match. Each start was infused with highlight dunks, transition 3-pointers and tenacious defense. It was the more of the same Wednesday night as Sierra Canyon ran out to a third straight early lead on the way to an 82-38 rout of Torrey Pines to advance to the CIF State Regional semifinals Saturda...

In Tight Race That Could Determine The Senate Majority, Even The Algae Counts

No campaign wants its planned speaking tour overshadowed by coverage of throngs of angry protesters. But that’s the situation Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) found himself in this week as he hopscotched across the state on his “Make Washington Work Bus Tour.” Scott was booed out of a Venice restaurant after only 10 minutes on Monday by protesters calling him “coward” and “Red Tide Rick,” a reference to the toxic red tide algal blooms currently choking the state’s Gulf coast. His campaign canceled an...

Podcast #402: Why Honor Matters

n today ‘s world, honor is typically thought of in terms of integrity — doing the right thing when no one is looking. But traditionally, honor meant having a reputation worthy of the respect of others. If people think about this type of honor at all these days, it’s usually in a negative way, associating it with pistol duels, honor killings, and toxic shame. But my guest today argues that for moral life to be robust and vital, a culture of honor is absolutely necessary. His name is Tamler...

Mooneyes Xmas Party 2017: An Epic Going-Away Bash

In its January 2018 issue, Hot Rod Deluxe announced that Irwindale Event Center—the home of a dragstrip inaugurated in 2001—would cease operation in early 2018. Another track bites the dust. Southern California has indeed lost several of them over the last couple of decades, including Carlsbad and L.A. County Raceway in Palmdale. Thankfully, our friends at Mooneyes, led by Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama, managed to squeeze in a final major show at Irwindale a couple of weeks before Christmas: t...

From where I stand: Rita Lopidia

Crossposted from UN Women. Rita Lopidia Photo: UN Women/Ryan Brown It was the year end, December 2013. We had many successes to celebrate—we had managed to mobilize more than 50 per cent women voters for the referendum and contributed towards the draft National Action Plan on UN Security Council resolution 1325. As I was finishing dinner with my colleagues, we heard the first gunshots. South Sudan had lapsed into conflict. In early 2014, I traveled to Addis, Ethiopia, to attend the first ...

17 Signs Millennials Are Better With Their Money Than You

By Ashley Redmond, Contributor Millennials might have a much better grasp of financial matters than their critics suggest, according to findings in TD Bank's first Consumer Spending Index survey. Members of this generation -- born between the early 1980s and early 2000s and now roughly between the ages of 12 and 34 -- have been chided for being too sheltered as children and for having grown up believing they are "special." They've also been accused of being irresponsible with their money. In ma...

The Global Family Reunion shows how far online genealogy has come

The Global Family Reunion crowd gathered for a group photo at the New York Hall of Science on June 6. They all held signs that read "I am a cousin." Photo by Ryan Brown/JTA What is more unexpected: that Jewish author A.J. Jacobs, known for his ambitious lifestyle experiments, has some Asian and Scandinavian roots? Or that rapper Ludacris is 1/16th Jewish? These are the types of questions that were raised by the Global Family Reunion on June 6, a Comic Con-esque celebration of the advancement of ...

Defendant's friends testify in Amherst accident trial's 3rd day

After spending most of the afternoon and early evening of Dec. 23 finishing up some last-minute Christmas shopping at malls in Nashua and Manchester, Travis Hobbs was hanging out at his friend Ryan Brown's house when another friend, Andrew Tighe, called his attention to a breaking-news item on a local media website.
