‘Avatar’ Could Have Starred Chris Evans or Channing Tatum

Avatar stars the somewhat bland Sam Worthington as Jake Sully. But at one point, the role almost went to one of two far more charismatic actors. James Cameron has been on an Avatar promotional blitz lately, dishing out details about both the original film, and the upcoming five sequels. While stop...

44% of Americans pay no income tax. Refunds remain focus for many of the rest

There's better news for taxpayers this week. Internal Revenue Service data for the second week of the 2019 tax filing season shows a slightly larger refund amount. When the IRS released its first-week data, which covered 2018 tax returns filed by Feb. 1, the number of 1040s submitted and processed, as well as the number of refunds and average amount of those fewer checks, were dramatically lower than at the same time last year. That led to much grumbling by filers and arguments among supporters...

Dennis McCarthy: A cruise down Van Nuys Blvd.’s memory lane

Tom Whitebirch pulled his 2015 GMC Acadia to the curb in front of Keyes Motors on Van Nuys Boulevard last week, and saw in his mind’s eye a short, fat kid wearing red and white checkered overalls holding up a hamburger on a plate, smiling at him. He’s not 82 now, he’s 16 – driving his 1941 Mercury Coupe with a powder blue paint job he paid $200 bucks for in 1953. Not the paint job, the whole car. A Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant used to be right here. It’s where all his pals in the Jesters, Hi Hats, a...

Owe Uncle Sam at tax time? Here are some ways to pay

By now, everyone knows that a lot of taxpayers are getting the worst news ever at filing time. They owe the U.S. Treasury money. We can debate the reasons for the unexpected tax bills ad infinitum. Withholding tables were rejiggered in 2018 following the changes in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). Itemized deductions and exemptions were reduced or eliminated by that tax legislation. Taxpayers didn't adjust their withholding to get their paycheck amounts more in line with the new law. The botto...

Announcement: Let’s Help Envision Take FLYTE

Posted: 2/14/2019 | February 14th, 2019 As travelers, we constantly meet people from around the world and experience cultures and values different than our own. I think that is why we travelers tend to (generally) be more open-minded. We want to see the differences in the world. Traveling gives us a broader perspective and understanding of life, the world, the people in it, and, often most importantly, ourselves. Arsenal fans furious as Gunners humiliated by BATE Borisov

Bad day at the office Arsenal fans are not happy in the slightest tonight as the Gunners were beaten by Belarusian side BATE Borisov in the Europa League. The Gunners travelled to Belarus expected to dominate the game and probably win comfortably, with BATE having not played a competitive game since their clash with PAOK back in December. Though, that was not the case with Arsenal falling to a 1-0 defeat. LONDON, ENGLAND – AUGUST 25: Unai Emery, manager of Arsenal gestures during the Premier L...

National Taxpayer Advocate wants IRS activities protected from future government shutdowns

Open-close sign via Giphy.com The drama continues in Washington, D.C., as far as keeping the federal government open. It looked like, despite some grumbling from all sides, that a bipartisan, bicameral deal reached this week would keep all of the federal government open past Feb. 15. We all need to keep our fingers (and toes) crossed that it happens, especially those of us — which mean most Americans — who deal with the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS obviously among those pushing for a reso...

I bobbed in the ocean, sitting on my board, breathing heavy from the paddle out past the break. I already felt like giving up, but my eyes were zeroed in on the horizon, squinting away the sunrise. My brain was on overdrive. This one? Too big. This one? No, wait…maybe…no. This one? No, I can’t do this! This one? Yes, …wait…shit…yes. I quickly did my sitting turn I had learned and lay down on my board. I scoot into position with my toes on the back of the board tense and ready. I take a deep brea...
