Checking out the Flea Market and some T-Dubing.

Clear skies today, but a high of only 61°F (16°C) and gusty winds.  It was definitely a long pants and fleece jacket kind of day.Sunrise: Drove into Las Cruces to check out the Flea Market, searching for a replacement handle for the scissor jack that came with the Sammy.  Found out it was very helpful for me to know Spanish when asking a vendor of tools and stuff like that for this item.  In spite of being understood, no one had one on hand, they'd all left theirs at home, darn it. The rest...

A Recycled Roadrunner, some 4-wheeling and finally got the package.

After breakfast, I drove Mariko out towards the Recycled Roadrunner, a roadside attraction located at a rest stop on the I-10 super slab (eastbound side).More info re this attraction here on  The roadrunner didn't originally stand on the rock....but after it was refurbed, they located it on a rock to discourage the morons who liked to climb aboard for pics. A closeup of the right wing... Now that's a lot of tennis shoes... Neat attraction, the only n...

Visiting the White Sands National Monument with Mariko

Today, the weather was warmer than the last couple of days but still more cloudy than desired, so it was still a brisk experience, walking among the dunes when the sun was hidden by clouds.I'd been to this park before, back in December of 2018, better pictures than the ones taken today here: LINKSo I learned one thing about the "white sands" at this monument.  If you visit after shortly after a snow fall, the sands are still wet if not still around and turns the sand, well, sand colored!  It wa...

After the snow storm...

I ended up running the catalytic propane heater almost 24 hours during the recent snow storm and used up about 1/8 of the propane in the onboard tank, so not bad at all!Though today started overcast, it would clear up in the late morning and it was then that temperatures started to steadily climb out of the high teens to the low 30s.  The sun felt good I must say.As it had been overcast all day yesterday and this morning, I ran the Predator generator most of the morning and into the early after...

Testing the Jack Extension and Taking Mariko's Top Off

A pretty lazy morning today, starting with a shot of the sun as it crested over one of the Needles: Really didn't do much, nor felt the need to do so, just relaxed and read....enjoying the warm sun which made the morning temperatures feel warmer than they actually were.  The lack of wind probably helped with that as well. I did get around to testing the viability of the 6" Jack Extension I'd purchased from SafeJack to extend the reach of the 6 Ton Bottle Jack I got from Amazon to go with i...

‘Marvelous and the Black Hole’ Review: A Sweet but Slight Coming-of-Age Comedy About Letting a Little Magic Into Your Life [Sundance 2021]

13 is a hard age. No longer a child, not yet an adult, and nowhere to channel that teen angst, which is even rawer for angry delinquent Sammy Ko (Miya Cech), who is struggling to overcome the grief over losing her mother. So Sammy breaks things at her school and tattoos little x’s on her thigh with a makeshift tattoo pen, until her father (Leonardo Nam) gets fed up and threatens her with military camp. If she can make it through one business class over the summer, then she doesn’t have to go. ...

Lazy Last Day at the Monticello Road BLM area.

Didn't really get much done in the morning, was content to just sit and listen to my current e-book and putter around the URRV and the Sammy.I did pull the plugs on Mariko and the color of the plugs look good now.  I had thought they were too white or lean before but now they're a faint caramel color so things should be good with them.I did go for one last drive in the northern trails of the Elephant Butte State Park, checking out trails I'd not wandered down before....nothing earthshaking foun...

I meet a Samurai Guru...

Quite the eventful day today.I'd driven down to the City of Elephant Butte to retrieve a package sent to me by my loving wife Martha.  It had the TPMS sensors for the Sammy so I know all is OK when towing her with the URRV. At the front entrance to the T or C Municipal Airport Package retrieved, I went to the Autozone in Truth or Consequences and what did I spy in the parking lot but another Suzuki Samurai!  I parked next to it and its owner came out to chat.  Mike W. works at Autozone and is...

A tool run, some light off-roading to the foothills, and a phone drop!

This morning's task was to replace the gear oil in Mariko's Transfer Case with new 80W90 oil.  Why?  I'd found the oil in the transfer case contaminated with water last month.  I had changed it out then, and this change was to ensure no water remained.I found I was missing the 24mm socket I'd used in my garage.  So before I could do the swap, I drove into T or C and the Autozone Auto Parts store there.  Before I got to the store though, I stopped Mariko at nearby buildings to take pictures of t...

"Eyebrows? Who cares? With all the suffering around us, with all of the important things to focus on, it flummoxes me to witness how people waste time and money."

That's the third-highest-ranked comment on a weirdly long WaPo article titled "Our pandemic eyebrows are driving us crazy. Can we learn to love them?"  All the high-rated comments say just about exactly the same thing. I chose that one to quote because it features my favorite word: flummox. It's a colloquial and vulgar word, according to the OED. "The formation seems to be onomatopoeic, expressive of the notion of throwing down roughly and untidily; compare flump, hummock, dialect slommock slo...

Mariko Tasks, RV Vent repair and a brisk ride with Yagi

Sunny but cool today, with a high only in the mid-60s....the steady wind made it seem much cooler. After some more looking at the fuel pump and ruminating over the problem overnight, it finally occurred to me to forego using the existing mount point on the floorboard of the Sammy.Instead, I secured the metal clamp that encircles the pump onto the cable sheath used by the parking brake!  Much quieter now, I can still hear it (just not as loud) when I turn the ignition to ON, can barely hear it wi...

CS Soapbox: Supernatural’s Ending is a Tribute to the Beauty of Platonic Love

CS Soapbox: Supernatural’s Ending is a Tribute to the Beauty of Platonic Love For many television shows centered around evolving relationships, romance tends to be the default focus or endgame for leading characters with a heavy emphasis on happiness seemingly only stemming from romantic love. Within and outside of the screen, it often feels like the idea of contentment is limited to romantic relationships, which goes against two very real truths: You can be single and still be fulfilled and ...

‘Safety’ Tips from Gun Prohibitionists Have Hidden Agenda

The NSSF promotes programs like First Shots which helps introduce new young shooters to the basic safety protocols of firearms. IMG U.S.A. – -( “Gun sales are way up, in Pennsylvania and across the country. And many are first-time owners,” The Philadelphia Inquirer notes in a “Philly Tips” column. “Here’s what you need to know about gun safety.” Gun owners can be forgiven if that assertion causes their antennae to go up. The mainstream press, what I call the DSM ( ), ha...

Comment on apple and cheddar scones by Leslie

In reply to Sammy. I also found the dough pretty soft and sticky, but I was able to cut/shape it anyway. Certainly couldn’t have used a rolling pin on it, though. My best guess is that this happens when your apples have higher moisture content? I think next time I’ll bake the apples for longer.

Jeff Tweedy Gets Back to His Roots (Again) With New Solo Album ‘Love is the King’

Jeff Tweedy’s first concert of the pandemic was weird. On Sept. 18, the Wilco frontman took the stage with the members of Tweedy, a side project that includes his sons Spencer and Sammy, for a drive-in show in McHenry, Ill. Emerging from quarantine to play music to a field of cars was strange enough. Warping […]
