Republicans take aim at billions set aside in stimulus bill for infrastructure and transport projects, including Amtrak, BART, and a bridge to Canada

President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, board an Amtrak train during the 2020 presidential campaign. Andrew Harnik/AP Photo The $1.9 trillion stimulus plan passed by the House included funding for Amtrak and BART.  About $1.5 billion would go to the Amtrak train system, Biden's favored mode of transport.  Rep. Kevin McCarthy and other Republican lawmakers said some of the infrastructure spending was pork. Visit the Business section of Insider for more stories. Billions from the $...

California Loosens COVID-19 Rules For Youth Sports

SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP) – Rules for youth sports to be played during the coronavirus pandemic are being loosened, California public health officials say. New guidance was released by the state on Friday. As part of the guidance, officials say all outdoor sports can resume in counties where COVID-19 case rates are at or below 14 people per 100,000. High contact sports like football, basketball and rugby, can resume if all players 13 and older get tested once per week. That testing requirement also ...

Ducks’ attempts to balance risk versus reward backfire at critical times

If the Ducks wished to cut out all their mistakes with the puck in their half of the rink, if they wanted to play without any giveaways of any kind, they could simply skate to the red line and shoot it into the other team’s end of the ice and adopt a defensive posture. But that would be dull and predictable and remind fans of the Dead Puck Era of the late-1990s. “We’ll never score a goal,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said Tuesday, one day after turnovers proved costly in their 3-2 loss to the Shar...

This California lawyer got $285,000 check from IRS, says ‘no thanks’

Santa Clara attorney Todd Rothbard got a sober letter from the IRS a few weeks ago. Sorry, it read, you miscalculated your taxes. We owe you $284,603. Rothbard shook his head and laughed. “No, no, no,” he thought. He made a quick call to his accountant and they agreed he’s not owed a cent. For days, he tried and failed to reach the IRS. On Feb. 8 , a second envelope arrived with a check for a little more than $285,000 — presumably, it included interest on the money he doesn’t think he deserves....

Jonathan Marchessault cross-checks Radim Simek and gets away with it

Vegas Golden Knights center Jonathan Marchessault got away with a cross-check on San Jose Sharks defenseman Radim Simek during Saturday night's NHL game at the SAP Center at San Jose. It happened early in the second period as the Golden Knights held a 1-0 lead on a goal scored by Marchessault in the first period. Simek had just chased down the puck in the corner on the Sharks defensive end, knocking Golden Knights right winger Reilly Smith off his feet with a hard check. However, as Simek too...

Ducks coach on division race: ‘Every team can win and every team is beatable’

Conventional wisdom suggests the Ducks must win more than their share of games against the Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks if they hope to end their two-season Stanley Cup playoff drought and advance to the postseason in May. Sure, the Ducks must also pick off the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues and Vegas Golden Knights now and then if they wish to improve their chances. But it would seem to be imperative to win the games against what could be considered the bottom...

Ducks’ low-energy power play continues to decline

Of all the aspects of the Ducks’ game that have gone haywire over the past few seasons, nothing has been as frustrating, as puzzling, as debilitating for the Ducks as their play while on the power play. Nothing has hindered their ability to score and to win more than misfiring while on it. Since leading the NHL with a 23.1% success rate in 2015-16, the Ducks have gotten progressively worse on the power play. They dropped to 18.7% in 2016-17, then to 17.8% in 2017-18, then to 17% in 2018-19, then...

Kings dodge disaster with Drew Doughty back in lineup

Having lost five consecutive games and potentially facing the prospect of losing a fifth regular player, this time their perennial leader in time on ice, the Kings needed some good news. Between their games with San Jose on Tuesday and Thursday, the Kings found out that defenseman Drew Doughty did not sustain a serious injury. He blocked a shot off his forearm Tuesday night, then left the game and did not practice Wednesday. There was a collective sigh of relief – among fans if not the Kings’ co...

The Ducks practiced as scheduled on Wednesday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and were set to play Thursday night against the Golden Knights despite a Vegas player receiving a positive COVID-19 test and being pulled from the ice in the second period of Tuesday’s game. Ducks RW Troy Terry rediscovers his ‘fluid’ game

Troy Terry said he had a conversation with Ducks teammate Ryan Miller the other day. Others on the roster might know Terry’s position of right wing in greater detail than Miller, a goaltender, but few have the same overall wealth of knowledge of the game. After all, Miller has played 783 games in 18 seasons in the NHL with the Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres. He has more victories than all but 14 goalies in league history. No American-born goalie has more than his 38...

Kings seek to snap losing streak vs. Sharks

Bouncing and sliding atop a four-game losing streak, the Kings return home to face a team with similar struggles when they host the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday and again Thursday. Separated by a point at the bottom of the West Division standings, the Sharks have split all but one of their five two-game sets to date. The Kings were swept by Vegas and Minnesota, but salvaged two points from overtime losses to the Wild. They also lost a one-off to the Ducks. The short-handed Kings – missing two top ...

Ironic recall effort likely bears pluses for Newson

The colorful Internet ad from an organization called Rescue California, a lead sponsor of the petition drive to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom, accuses him of posting “The worst record of getting vaccines distributed” of any state in America. For one thing, that’s not correct. As of Feb. 1, California stood 37th among the states in the percentage of available COVID-19 vaccine doses that had already been administered. Not great, but far from the worst, and the pace has picked up since then. Then there’...

Review: The Weeknd is solid, not super at Super Bowl LV

The Weeknd turned in a bizarre, but mostly enjoyable, high-concept mini-concert during the Super Bowl LV Halftime Show on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Appearing first before our eyes as the driver in a two-seater sports car, parked in front of a Vegas-like backdrop, the 30-year-old Toronto talent — born Abel Tesfaye — then stepped out of the car and took a seat at the edge of the stage. The camera pans back and we realize the edge of the stage was actually the top of the stage — and...
