These freeway lane markings do seem a bit unusual

Q. Honk: The lane lines on the I-10 Freeway in Santa Monica and maybe elsewhere are white on a black background. Both the background and the broken white lines are sprayed on. Why are they like this? I thought it might be to help driverless cars. – Bob Marsh, Pacific Palisades A. That stretch there is concrete, not the more attractive asphalt, as you know, Bob. The technique you mentioned is to help motorists figure out exactly where they should be: White paint on concrete could use a little hel...

Rams watch Lakers and Dodgers win championships and think, ‘It’s our turn’

The Lakers got the NBA championship. The Dodgers got the World Series. And the Rams? They got the message. “I had a lot of friends text last night, joking around, saying, ‘It’s (time for) the Rams. You’ve got to hit the trifecta,’ ” Rams kicker Kai Forbath said Wednesday, the day after the Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays to wrap up L.A.’s second sports title in 16 days. “A little added pressure,” Forbath said. “But that would be just amazing for the city.” Forbath, a Santa Monica native and West...

Via and Hyundai-Aptiv joint venture to offer shared robotaxi rides next year

Motional, the Hyundai-Aptiv joint venture, and on-demand shuttle startup Via plan to launch a shared robotaxi service for the public in a U.S. city in the first half of 2021. The companies said the aim is to develop a “blueprint” for on-demand shared robotaxis and learn how these driverless vehicles can be integrated into mass transit. The details on this partnership and the service are scant — at least for now. The companies, which said more specifics would be shared at a later date, didn’t ide...

Rams see Kai Forbath as a seasoned alternative at kicker

THOUSAND OAKS — Help for the Rams’ kicking game is on the way, but exactly when Kai Forbath will get his chance is up in the air. Forbath, the former Notre Dame High (Sherman Oaks) and UCLA kicker whom the Rams signed on Tuesday, won’t be able to clear the league’s COVID-19 protocols and join the team until Sunday. That makes it likely that struggling rookie Samuel Sloman will still be kicking for the Rams (4-2) in their Monday night game against the Chicago Bears (5-1) — with Forbath, a nine-ye...

How would Prop. 15 impact California’s housing crisis?

By Matt Levin | Calmatters When Californians approved Proposition 13 in 1978, critics of the landmark ballot measure say voters did not foresee many of the unintended consequences of capping property taxes on both residential and commercial land: lower school funding, cash-strapped cities, major corporate tax benefits. Forty-two years later, Californians are about to vote on Proposition 15, which proponents say will solve many of those problems by raising taxes on commercial properties. But ...

Tom Lehrer Releases His All of Catchy and Savage Musical Satire Into the Public Domain

If the age of American musical satire is behind us, Tom Lehrer may have ended it simply by being unsurpassably good at it. No less a comedy-song master than “Weird Al” Yankovic still walks among us, of course, but he specializes in broad parody rather than biting irony. Despite having retired from public life, Lehrer too lives on, and at 92 has taken action to assure his work a longer existence by releasing it into the public domain. On his official site you’ll see a statement from the m...

Local district elections open doors for minorities in LA County cities

In November 2018, Costa Mesa made history when voters for the first time elected a Latino to the City Council. In fact, three Latinos were catapulted to victory on the seven-member panel in that landmark election. But it wasn’t an overnight, dramatic shift in demographics that shook up the political landscape in Orange County’s eighth largest city, which is two-thirds White. Rather, it was a change in how voting is conducted, and reflected a movement that has been coursing through California sin...

Two rerun propositions that deserve low ratings

This fall’s California ballot contains definite head-scratchers: Two repeat propositions that – based on their 2018 showings – probably did not deserve a rerun nearly this soon. Just two years ago, voters opted by almost identical margins of 61-39 percent and 62-38 percent to reject the 2018 Propositions 8 and 10, one mandating significant increases in staffing at dialysis centers that preserve the lives of more than 80,000 patients with end-stage kidney disease, the other allowing rent controls...

California Sues US Regulator In Bid To Deter ‘Ghost Guns’

SACRAMENTO (AP) – Backed by the fathers of two slain children, California’s attorney general sued the Trump administration on Tuesday in an effort to crack down on so-called “ghost guns” that can be built from parts with little ability to track or regulate the owners. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives doesn’t consider that the unfinished do-it-yourself kits qualify as firearms. So buyers don’t have to undergo the usual gun purchase background checks and in most stat...
