As post-LA Marathon runners took over Santa Monica, meet the DJ ‘zombie’ who live-streamed his race

As the clock struck three hours past start time of the L.A. Marathon on Sunday morning, runners who had just breached the finish began slowly walking through a maze of muscle milk and bananas in a post-marathon saunter, perhaps best described as a zombie waddle. One of such post-marathon “zombies” was DJ BL3ND, his face covered by an actual zombie-akin demon mask as he updated his Instagram followers about his 26.2-mile achievement. The Downey-native wears the mask to hide his name and age from ...

Southern California mountain lions face possible extinction, study finds

Hemmed in by freeways isolating them from larger populations nearby, the mountain lions of the Santa Ana and Santa Monica mountains face a moderate to near-certain chance for extinction in the coming decades unless new cats find a way into the ranges, according to a study published today in the journal Ecological Applications. Only once before have researchers recorded a mountain lion population with so little genetic diversity as these two Southern California “habitat islands.” Small population...

LADWP and the case of the twice-fleeced ratepayers

Solid evidence of collusion has emerged, but not where you may have been expecting to see it. The revelations came to light in a Los Angeles courtroom recently, where L.A. Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle is presiding over what Perry Mason author Erle Stanley Gardner might have called, “The Case of the Twice-Screwed Ratepayers.” You may recall that a few years ago, many LADWP customers were ripped off by excessive charges for water after a new billing system was implemented. If you received one ...

Airbnb Loses Major Fight Over California City's Rental Law

The Santa Monica ordinance holds the companies responsible for booking rentals of residences that aren’t licensed by the city. Fery Malek-Madani left her home in Iran at 11, traveling to Belgium for boarding school and making Western Europe her home for the five decades that followed. Her dreams as a schoolgirl in the mid-’60s were the same as those of the friends she left behind and the new friends she found in her adopted home, she says. But a few years ago, as wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Syria and Yemen roiled the Middle East, she sensed a difference in the way the west viewed the countries of that region. “I was a...
