Sunday Sunset on the Front Range

Been back home since Thursday, getting chores done, helping #1 son practice for his Network+ Certification Test, and just doing minor fix work on the URRV and associated gear. It's been really warm here on the Front Range, to the point any riding I do is either early morning or late evening.Such as tonight's short ride to the usual sunset viewing spot.  It's become quite popular, this spot, I counted about 13 cagers in the immediate area.  Cagers that I would end up having to edit out of sunset p...

Riding the Penrose BLM trails with Bob and Dale....

Thursday, May 14 Not much  riding today, mainly relaxing at the URRV campsite and catching up on my reading.  The sunset this evening was OK: Friday, May 15Dale and Bob from the neighborhood arrived Friday afternoon and after they got their tents setup and such we headed out for short ride to get them acquainted with the area.  Sorry, no pics.Saturday, May 16We rode around the accessible to the Ural portions of the BLM trails, concentrating mainly on the ones off of the 6101 and 6102 trai...

Uraling to Jury Duty, learning to install drywall....

One of the major to-do's causing my flying home from Arizona in late January was to attend Jury Duty selection.February 10, Monday, was part of a group of 150 prospective jurors assigned to a Homicide Trial.  Lucky me, I apparently am everything lawyers seek in a potential juror and I was selected to be one of 14 jurors for the trail.  Twelve of us will eventually render a verdict, with two others as "alternate" jurors to ensure the number doesn't drop below the twelve required.Good thing they h...

Changing out Fiona's Oil Filter and some windy riding

Friday, December 13, 2019A very windy day today.  Even on three wheels, you could feel the wind trying to push the rig around as I drove Patrick over to Pickens Technical College for his computer classes.I'd done all the prep work involved with accessing Fiona's Beemer engine before taking Patrick to school this morning:  Separating the two upper and front lower sidecar mount points along with loosening but not disconnecting rear lower mount, removing the engine's front cover, removing the heade...

Cooling out at home for a change

Not much going on besides usual seasonal stuff. Before last week's snow storm, I did get around to re-securing the right-most rear support bracket for the water tank.  It's been loose since we got the URRV I'm thinking.  I couldn't see it until I removed a splash shield inside the wheel well.  I also added some wood blocks to further support the tank.  The fresh water tank mounted to Uma, the URRV the red arrow points to the loose support bracket. The black tape is holding an LED light in pla...

Uraling after recent snow storms

Been home since Thursday of last week, catching up on chores and tasks here at home.Sunday, it started snowing for what would turn out to be a total of about 8 inches of snow for the area around my neighborhood.  A bit more in the drifts of course but about 8 inches for sure.Cold temperatures kept me from wandering out while the snow fell, except in Martha's car as I took her to work so I could then take the car to the tire shop to have the winter tires put on.Now it's Wednesday, the 30th and I ...

A Red Sunrise and Uraling in the Red Desert

Oct 23Today's sunrise was pretty good: Wednesday, the 23rd of OCT,  I rode Scarlett to check out the Swing Arm City OHV area next door.It was nothing but flat graveled/dirt area with lots of small ditches to cause one to rapidly slow down to avoid smashing the front wheel into said ditch!Nothing to take pictures of, so I got back on Highway 24 and headed west for a few miles to the entrance to Cathedral Valley Road.I decided to check out the side road I'd seen a group of hikers emer...

Boondocking and Uraling near Factory Butte

3PM OCT 24: I am home!I was able to stay in the area near Factory Butte, UT for about three days thanks to waiting out snowy weather in the I-70 passes in Colorado.Oct 22First full day in this area.  Not as windy as yesterday fortunately, so once the sun was out in force, I was able to get some riding in.  The view to the east from the top of a nearby Mesa  View to the west from same Mesa Main objective today was to explore the area around the main terrain feature here:  Factory Butte....

Uraling again in the Cathedral Valley, boondocking at the Coal Mine Wash BLM site.

Oct 21Left Hells Backbone Road campsite way before dawn, hoping to make some time and get some riding in within Cathedral Valley, UT.I would end up traversing UT 24 where it crosses the Capitol Reef National Park but made no stops. After checking in with my loving wife where I could get a cell signal, I doubled back about 7 miles to the entrance to the Cathedral Valley Road and parked the URRV.Got Scarlett off the trailer and off we went, motoring a bit over 14 kilometers to reach this point with...

Parowan Gap, UT Highway 12 and Boondocking near Hells Backbone Road.

Oct 19Saturday.After saying goodbye to Martha as she boarded a Lyft ride into Las Vegas, I made my way out of the city via CR 215 to I-15.Heading NE, I drove to a BLM site near Parowan Gap, about 19 miles off of I-15 from the town of Parowan. Nice little site, had it all to myself. Next I went to check out the petroglyphs at Parowan Gap: Crossing the "gap", I found a small dry lake bed next to a road named Little Salt Lake Rd. Retracing my route to catch the sunset, I paused to catch ...

Glamping at Lake Powell, a Sunset and a walk through Lower Antelope Canyon

Wednesday, OCT 17Views of the colorful rock formation bordering Lake Powell, across from the campground we glamped at tonight: From the top of the crowded Wahweap Overlook, two miles from the campground: The overlook was swarming with selfie-taking tourists Thursday, OCT 17 We toured the Lower Antelope Canyon, a pretty famous slot canyon near Page, AZ.  It was a bit crowded for me but endurable given the absolutely beautiful views of the water-formed rock formations within the...

Hiking the Zion Canyon Overlook with friends

Another sunny and warm day here in the Zion National Park.Today we gathered to drive over to the east end of the big tunnel within the park and go hike the Canyon Overlook Trail, which we thought was rated easy but was really rated moderate.Boy, was it moderate.  My ankle still hurts.  Still, not too bad a trail.  Martha and Bridget at near the beginning of the trail After a couple of false turns where I lost the trail, we finally made it to the overlook point: Closeups of the far rock ...

Uralista Meet, Redstone Park and Lotdocking at the Western Aviation Warbirds Museum

Yesterday, Oct 12, it was my please to have coffee in the town of Henderson, NV with fellow Uralista Val H. and her husband Wayne. Val showed up in her Baikal Limited Edition Patrol and Wayne rode a BMW 1200 GS.We had a good time chatting, getting to know each other and sharing stories.  For instance, Val had just had her rig's engine rebuilt (a three month process) due to a crankshaft failure!  Sound familiar.  We looked over each other's rigs, compared notes and such.Soon though it was time fo...

Uraling in the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area

The Red Rock Canyon Conservation area is maintained by the BLM and they provide a campground near the canyon for visitors. Not a bad campground, minimal space between sites, sparse vegetation, pit toilets, water and packed gravel for pads.  I paid $20 per night, and I now realize i overpaid by half as I now qualify under the Lifetime Pass issued to me recently by the NPS.  Oh well, live and learn.Dawn provided a decent sunrise: After a leisurely breakfast, I geared up and motored out of the ...

Uraling the Moki Dugway, a broken swing arm and Uma to the rescue!

Sunday, Oct 5, 2019Left this morning after breakfast in cool temperatures to motor over to the Moki Dugway using Utah 261 which takes one to the bottom of the cliffs the road was built to scale.Rode all the way to the top with no issues and then started back down again, this time taking pictures as its easier on the Ural's clutch when pointing downhill rather than uphill for standing starts.Near the top of the road, I parked Scarlett, walked a short ways to an overlook spot:  One of the best...

Glamping and Uraling in the Valley of the Gods, Utah -

Thursday, Oct 3, 2019 I displaced from Hermosa, CO and drove almost three hours to a BLM camp ground near Bluff, UT and set up camp there, intending to spend the night.  Not a bad site, not crowded but small camp spots and a bit far (20+ miles) from sights such as the Moki Dugway, Valley of the Gods and Mexican Hat. Bad map reconnaissance on my part led to the above choice.  I discovered this when after setting up camp, I rode Scarlett over to Gooseneck State Park for pictures: A...

Uraling for Fall Colors along the Million Dollar Highway

The Million Dollar Highway, aka US550, aka The San Juan Skyway. All apt names for one of the more picturesque roads in the great state of Colorado and one of my favorites to ride, even when it's a bit chilly like it was today.  Still, the sun was out and I was warmly dressed in gear so it was all good. Here's pictures from yesterday afternoon shortly after I'd set up camp at Haviland Lake Campground run by the Forest Service.    Haviland Lake  Twilight Peak  Peak near Silverto...

A slow glamping week

Monday, August 26.Not much got done in terms of riding, pretty much relaxed around the campsite.Tuesday, August 27.Woke early, again, and got some pics of the campsite as the morning sun got above the nearby hill: Rode into Vail to have lunch with neighborhood friend Dale B.  We went to a pizza/sandwich shop, not very expensive.  The rest of the afternoon was spent by me troubleshooting a high idle situation with Fiona, my '99 Rig.  Didn't make much progress there. Then it was time for a mild ...

Back home and a Spring Sunset

Got back from Glamping in the Hugo SWA this past Saturday.Got the URRV all cleaned up, fixed a few things that needed fixing such as the trailer marker light on the left side (the light portion disappeared), further secured the light that lets me check the water level on the fresh water tank and determined tongue weight on the trailer for future usage. Not much else to report, rode the other rig, Fiona and Brigitta got some much needed exercise as well this week.  Trying to be better about keepin...

Short Rides

Last ten days or so have been a bit of a strain in the House of Chang.Miles, aka Thing 2, was finally diagnosed with a severe case of Mononucleosis and much time was spent in different emergency rooms and urgent care facilities over the last couple of months before that was determined.Good news is, all other much more worrisome causes have been eliminated, it's definitely Mono. In between visits to medical facilities, I worked in some short rides. April 7...clear views of nearby peaks  Mount ...

Scarlett has been repaired.

Yep, she's working again. The clutch pack replacement and subsequent replacement of the input shaft for the gearbox allowed for her re-assembly yesterday.Took me a total of 5 joy-filled hours to put everything back together but she's mobile again!Had to redo the installation of the air box twice as I mis-routed part of the wiring for the left side ECU.Reinstalling the swing arm bolts also took some time.  The left side one went on easy enough with the use of a ratchet strap to pull the arm into p...

The Southwestern Sojourn - Day 49: Uraling along Rocky Point Road

Today's riding involved exploring the trails around the campground. Not much to report, I kept encountering either "no motorized travel" signs or private property signs and ended up turning back.  Looking west from near the campground, that't Oatman Mountain on the right. I decided to head west, along Rocky Point Road, past the turn off for Oatman Mountain I'd explored earlier. Went as far as 17 miles, to Hyder Road where it parallels a railroad track that was marked as "out of service"....

The Southwestern Sojourn - Day 48: Gila Bend Museum and other sights

This morning, I rode Scarlett the 25 miles or so to the nearby highway junction town of Gila Bend after a pretty good sunrise: The town, as I understand it, has basically been the junction point of travel technologies over the history of the region.  From wagons, to trains, and now auto highways, Gila Bend, has functioned as a meeting point.I got some groceries and then toured the museum at the city's visitor center. It's a small museum, basically contained in one large room that is part...

The Southwestern Sojourn - Day 47: Painted Rock Petroglyph Campground, Day 2

Decided to hang out another day at the campground after all.  It promised to be a sunny and warm day with some clouds.Dawn came and while started clear, a low layer of fog moved through the valley as I waited for the sun to show itself.  It made for some nice lighting in spite of the lack of clouds overhead: As the fog grew thicker, it made the nearby hills and distant peaks appear to be afloat on clouds.  Oatman Mountain  The fog got higher and partially blocked the sun as it finally...

The Southwestern Sojourn - Day 46: Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and Campground

Left the Cottonwood Canyon Road BLM campsite today and found a spot at the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and Campground about 15 miles west of Gila Bend, AZ.It's a BLM campground, featuring nice big spots with space between the sites and pretty level as well.  For the $8 camping fee, there's pit toilets and a garbage dumpster along with a camp host.  Not bad.  It wasn't crowded, perhaps slightly less than half full. It's right next to the Painted Rock Petroglyph site itself. From wikipedia:  LINKTh...

The Southwestern Sojourn - Day 45: Maintenance Day

A cloudy day with wind making the temperatures which reached the mid-60s seem cooler.Still the clouds made for a nice sunrise: Found there were tasks to be done on Scarlett, the 2014 Ural Sidecar Rig and I spent some time at the hardware store in nearby Florence, AZ sourcing the right bolt. One of the two bolts which held the starter motor in place had fallen off and I noticed it this morning.  I think I failed to secure it properly while working on the failed clutch parts last month.  Sigh....

The Southwestern Sojourn - Day 44: Checking out Cottonwood Canyon

Today was the day to ride Scarlett to see what lay to the east along Cottonwood Canyon Road.Turns out, I didn't get very far.One road turned out to be blocked, there's apparently some kind of livestock operation behind locked gates.Further on, the road got bad really fast....and I wasn't up to a kidney busting ride today and so I stopped early on for this picture. Going back to the fork in the road, I took the one on the right instead and wound up stopped by the entrance to an open pit quarry...

The Southwestern Sojourn - Day 43: Miami

Jan 07Miami, Arizona that is.  More on this name in a bit. After two days of overcast skies, I woke to a clear sky! Having spent my teenage years in Miami, FL....I tend to notice when other locales are named the same, such as the one in Ohio.Today I rode Scarlett over to US Highway 60 and headed east towards the town of Miami, passing Superior along the way and turning around eventually at Globe, AZ. Martha and I spent Jan 1-4 visiting with her sister's family, her dad and local friends as well.Martha's sister, Laura, Husband Andy and son Greg all flew back to Michigan on Wednesday.  Martha and I hung out at her dad's place, just relaxing really, getting some chores done while there.Saturday, Jan 5We got the URRV ready to roll in the morning, filled up with water from Martha's dad's home and left soon afterwards.  We found a spot, enroute to the next campsite, to dump tanks, gas up both in t...
