Vaccination is a hard sell in a solidly Trump Alabama county

By Jay Reeves | Associated Press HALEYVILLE, Ala. — Tending a thrift store that displays a faded Trump flag in a nearly all-white Alabama county with a long history of going against the grain, Dwight Owensby is among the area’s many skeptics of the COVID-19 vaccine. Owensby, 77, said he doesn’t often watch TV news or read the local paper, and he doesn’t spend much time talking about the pandemic with others — it’s just not a big topic in this rural, heavily forested part of the state. But he sus...

Giants GM Scott Harris explains signing Hunter Pence over Kevin Pillar

Madison Bumgarner wearing a jersey other than one for the Giants still remains a shock to some. Kevin Pillar quickly became a fan favorite in San Francisco for his diving catching in center field and ability to actually his the ball out of Oracle Park. Instead of bringing him back, the Giants essentially opted to replace him with a Hunter Pence reunion, costing the front office only $3 million.

MLB free agency: What we learned about Giants at Winter Meetings

The Giants made just two moves this week, but that one certainly caught the attention of many around the game, and it was one team officials couldn't stop talking about over the last couple of days of the Winter Meetings. It was a creative move, one straight out of an NBA offseason, with the Giants using their financial flexibility to pry away a good prospect from an Angels organization that soon would give Anthony Rendon $245 million. This isn't the type of move that will sell season ...

A “view” from the courtroom: Counting to five

Today is the oral argument in one of the term’s biggest cases, Department of Commerce v. New York, about the Trump administration’s efforts to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. It is also a rare day for afternoon arguments, and rarer still because there will be two of those. Solicitor General Noel G. Francisco at lectern (Art Lien) When the court squeezed the census case into its already announced April calendar, it made the wise decision to push the two cases that were originall...

Thursday round-up

Briefly: At Law.com, Tony Mauro reports that Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., sent a letter last month to “Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. and Court Clerk Scott Harris, decrying ‘the court’s practice of routinely accepting amicus curiae briefs from special interest groups that fail to disclose their donors.’” At Justia’s Verdict blog, Samuel Estreicher writes that Kisor v. In a letter, government “suggests” hold for trial in census citizenship dispute

On November 16, the Supreme Court announced that it would hear oral argument in February in a dispute over evidence in the challenge to the Trump administration’s decision to bring back a question about citizenship on the 2020 census. Yesterday the federal government took the unusual step of sending a letter to the Supreme Court to “suggest” that the justices put further proceedings in a trial contesting the decision on hold. The letter came after both the trial court and a federal appeals court...

A “view” from the courtroom: Opening with an empty spot on the bench

So this is what all the fuss is about. The Supreme Court returns from its summer recess with cases for argument today about the dusky gopher frog and age discrimination in government agencies with fewer than 20 employees. As Adam Liptak observes in The New York Times, the court’s docket presents “lower-profile but still consequential legal questions” that may allow the justices “to find ways to bridge the usual ideological divides” amid the continuing battle over the nomination of Judge Brett Ka...
