Shabazz Palaces – “Chocolate Souffle”

Seattle art-rap mystics Shabazz Palaces are still returning next month with The Don Of Diamond Dreams, the follow-up to their twin 2017 albums Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star and Quazarz Vs. The Jealous Machines. We've already heard one track so far, the woozy, lurching Purple Tape Nate collab "Fast Learner," and now … More »

Shabazz Palaces – “Fast Learner” (Feat. Purple Tape Nate)

The enigmatic Seattle art-rap titans Shabazz Palaces are returning to the fray. Back in 2017, Shabazz Palaces released two albums, Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star and Quazarz Vs. The Jealous Machines, on the same day. We last heard from the group when they teamed up with Clipping on the Drexciya-inspired 2019 single … More »

Clipping – “Aquacode Databreaks” (Feat. Shabazz Palaces)

The Los Angeles-based trio Clipping and the Seattle duo Shabazz Palaces both make disorienting art-rap music for Sub Pop Records. But the two groups have radically different aesthetics and approaches. They're not exactly the likeliest collaborators. Today, though, the two groups have joined forces on a new track called "Aquacode Databreaks." … More »

Porter's Head: Rapper Porter Ray on His Latest Hip-Hop Opus, 'Eye of the Beholder'

None His talent caught the eye and ears of a kindred spirit, Ishmael Butler of Shabazz Palaces and Digable Planets, who clearly saw much of himself in the young upstart. Indeed, Porter Ray possesses a similarly skewed vision of hip-hop upheld by his far more experienced mentor. But Ray is wise beyond his years, exhibiting a firm sense of self which translates effortlessly in the recording studio. Butler, also an A&R at Sub Pop Records, brought the young rapper onboard at the label in 2015. Ray'...

Knife Knights (Ishmael Butler & Erik Blood) – “Give You Game” Video (NSFW)

Knife Knights is the new creative union of Shabazz Palaces' Ishmael Butler and musician/engineer Erik Blood. "Give You Game," their latest recording and Sub Pop debut, is the production duo’s take on displacement and "sceneism" in 2018. It’s a weird, compelling track, with abstract visuals to match. More »

Shabazz Palaces - "Since C.A.Y.A." (Singles Going Steady)

Adriane Pontecorvo : Afrofuturist imagery and lyrics that occasionally distort into the abstract make for a dark and dissonant vision on "Since C.A.Y.A." Thundercat's guest bass dances with electronic beats, and the whole track winds back in on itself from every direction over its course, a spherical world of hip-hop for androids and aliens. Those space-age synths are what really make this an attention-grabber, but even aside from them, it's a fantastic cacophony. [8/10] ...

Utrecht’s Le Guess Who? Isn’t Like Any Festival You’ll See In The USA

These days, whenever all the big-name American festivals start to announce their lineups for the year, there's inevitably a certain, noticeable same-ness. It's a consequence of those festivals becoming more popular than at their inception, with festival-going becoming an overall more mainstream activity in America; it's a consequence of the music industry's contractions and … More »

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

Music videos were good this week. The rest of the world was absolute fucking trash, but music videos were good.
