Why transforming higher education can promote racial equality

I was very active politically in the 1960s, 70s, and the early 80s. Life became more difficult in the late 1980s with the arrival of a third child, and as I focused to publish enough to get tenure in a large Midwestern university. Today, as I look back on that time, I struggle with two perspectives about current anti-racist activism and about a continued anti-racist struggle in the academy. One of them is to believe that the current political reckoning over racism in the United States is differe...

Waze gets a big visual update with a focus on driver emotions

Crowdsourced navigation platform Waze, which is owned by Google and yet remains a separate, but intertwined product relative to Google Maps, just got one of its biggest UI and design overhauls ever. The new look is much more colourful, and also foregrounds the ability for individual drivers to share their current emotions with Moods, a set of user-selectable icons (with an initial group of 30) that can reflect how you’re feeling as you’re driving. Moods may seem like a relatively small use...

Manchester United Reach FA Cup Semi-Finals

Harry Maguire scored in extra-time winner as a poor Manchester United beat 10-man Norwich 2-1 to book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals. With penalties looming, the United captain broke the Canaries’ resistance with a drilled close-range effort with two minutes remaining at Carrow Road. Odion Ighalo had given United the lead early in the second half but Todd Cantwell’s 20-yard drive, and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Tim Krul, forced extra-time after Timm Klose’s dismissal for a la...

‘Artemis Fowl’ Review: An Astounding Failure as an Adaptation and as an Entertaining Movie

I’ve been burned before by big-budget Hollywood adaptations of a beloved childhood property. I still remember the time that I sat in the darkened theater for The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan’s disastrous adaptation of the untouchably perfect Nickelodeon series. My deflating excitement slowly being replaced by an appalled disappointment is something that I never wanted to experience again. Unfortunately, I would with Kenneth Branagh‘s shiny and joyless adaptation of Artemis Fowl. Eoin C...

Ahmaud Arbery's Final Run in a Neighborhood Where 911 Calls Had Piled Up

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- For many residents of Satilla Shores, a subdivision in coastal Georgia, their waterfront neighborhood is paradise without pretension.Several of the homes are low-slung ranches of 20th-century vintage, more cozy than fancy, and shaded by dramatic, moss-draped oaks. Some backyards are bordered by the Little Satilla River, a lazy on-ramp to a stunning jigsaw puzzle of waterways and wetlands stretching to the Atlantic Ocean. But by mid-February, concerns about property crimes were m...
