Solo female travel beyond safety

In 1980 , after graduating from New England College, which, at the time, had a sister campus in Arundel, England, my mom traveled across Europe, Morocco, and Israel alone. Born in Germany and raised primarily in Pennsylvania, she was no stranger to international travel. Transatlantic family reunions were common. She’d chosen to pursue her studies abroad, and two years prior to her months-long solo excursion, she’d been questioned at the Muscat airport for traveling independently to visit a col...

Restaurant scene in Columbus, Ohio

In 2013, Lauren Culley returned to her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, for a visit. At the time, she was managing the kitchen at Blue Bottle coffee shop in New York City after leaving a career in book publishing. She didn’t intend to stick around Columbus for long, and she certainly didn’t intend to move back. But when she got there, she found a city she hardly recognized. “The city felt different. It looked different,” Culley says. “There was a momentum to the city that you could see and feel. I...

Tom Ford Rose Prick Review

Looking at the number of celebrated roses in Rose Prick's pyramid, one might anticipate an extreme rose scent. When I sprayed it for the first time, I smelled overwhelmingly intense patchouli with its darker, earthier and woodier facets amplified. The patchouli accord was not alone, but its forceful break-in diminished the rest of the notes.  Top notes: Sichuan pepper, turmericHeart: May rose, T... How AI (and Mushrooms) Are Helping Fight Poverty in China’s Most Remote Villages

The last thing on Geru Drolma’s mind was becoming an internet celebrity. All she wanted was to make rent. But the steamed buns Drolma rose at 5 a.m. each morning to make in her village in western China’s Sichuan province just weren’t selling fast enough. So with the bills mounting up, Drolma set off to hunt for wild fungi she hoped to sell at the local market, following the same azalea-strewn mountain paths carved by generations of her fellow ethnic Tibetans before her. Finding the best fun...

Li Ziqi Deserves the Hype

In the past week or so, I’ve suddenly started hearing a lot about the videos of a girl named Li Ziqi ( 李子柒 ). She lives out in rural Sichuan and likes to share videos of herself making stuff from scratch (the traditional Chinese way), which includes amazing cooking videos, but also includes creating other stuff as well. Perhaps what makes her videos most unique (aside from stunning scenery and interesting content) is how little she talks in her videos. I like that. This is the video I watche...

Chinese Church faces identity questions

China (MNN) - It’s no secret that things are changing in China. Tensions in Hong Kong, crackdowns on kids programs, and pressure on foreign visitors all act as snapshots into the increased difficulties facing Chinese locals, especially when it comes to the Church. Yes, things are changing, and if anything is certain, it’s that the Church needs to rely on God and look to its leaders. That’s what makes the work of ministries like China Partner so important. They’re supporting and training yo...

Tasting flights that aren’t beer

Though the word “flight” might conjure up images of planes, some flights are actually all about eating and drinking your way to bliss (not vacation). This kind of flight is for curious eaters with big appetites, the type of person who can’t just choose one item on the menu but wants to try one bite of everything. Most tasting flights are beer- or wine-focused, but there are more enticing options out there for people with more adventurous tastes. Tasting flights typically group together three...

Washington DC’s Best Chinese Restaurant Has A Spicy Secret Menu

There’s a pleasantly stubborn hole in the wall restaurant in Washington D.C.’s Logan Circle neighborhood that serves Szechuan cuisine, with an ingredient missing on most menus. These days though, the special Ma-La section is on the first page of Great Wall’s menu but as the surrounding shops and restaurants reflect the new money in Logan Circle, it’s still som...

Carrot Halwa Sourdough with 20% Sprouted Golden Quinoa Submitted by Elsie_iu on May 28, 2019 - 8:37pm. Gajar ka halwa aka carrot halwa is a popular Indain dessert savored by many.
