A month ago, Antonio Gomez III was a healthy 46-year-old struggling like so many others to balance work and parenting during the coronavirus pandemic. This...

In only town hall, Smith and Garcia trade views on future of LA County’s 25th Congressional District

25th Congressional District foes Christy Smith and Mike Garcia faced off in a virtual forum on Tuesday, their first and only political jousting match before the Nov. 3 election. The pair — battling each other for the office for the second time in mere months — tackled a range of national and local issues that will shape the wildly “purple” district. How bike shops kept up with America's 121% spike in demand

As bikes became a means of recreation, exercise, and commuting during coronavirus shutdowns, bike companies were facing growing demand. In March, leisure-bike sales jumped 121% in the US. But when Lunar New Year and COVID-19 outbreaks shut down bike-manufacturing factories in China, bike companies also had to contend with a shortage of the now super-popular bikes. Business Insider stopped by the Linus Bike warehouse in Los Angeles and State Bicycle's shop in Tempe, Arizona, to see how the compa...

The great life and legacy of Murray Shapiro

Everybody knows politics is a rough business, but I’d like to tell you something good about it. Running for office gives you the rare privilege of meeting some of the most inspirational and phenomenal people who have ever set foot on the earth. In 2014, I had the privilege of meeting a veteran of World War II at the Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade. Murray Shapiro was there with his son, Dr. Leland Shapiro, then the chair of the Agriculture Department at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, and know...

CA GOP chair Jessica Millan Patterson says diversity doesn’t end with her

Party Chair /ˈpärdē/ /CHer/: the presiding officer of a political party. Party chairs are elected at local, regional and national levels. Jessica Millan Patterson made history and headlines in 2019 when GOP delegates elected her to chair California’s Republican Party. First Latina! First woman! First millennial! With trick-or-treat discouraged in L.A. County, Halloween fans must scare up a little creativity

When Jasen Smith learned this week that public health officials were advising against trick-or-treating and prohibiting other Halloween attractions such as haunted houses and block parties in Los Angeles County this year, he really wasn’t too surprised. County officials recently issued word that trick-or-treating was prohibited, then backed down from that stance on Wednesday — but nonetheless discouraged the annual tradition. Meanwhile, Smith, a 33-year-old Woodland Hills resident, was already p...

Suzette Valladares for Assembly District 38

California’s 38th Assembly District, centered around Santa Clarita and extending to Simi Valley on the west, up to the Castaic area in the north and the high desert in the east, is one of those still fairly rare state regions in which the “top-two” voting rules for primaries resulted in two candidates from the same party in the November general election. That those candidates are both Republicans is indicative of a remarkably botched job by Democrats in the district, which is currently represent...

Hot, dry day brings brush fires to Southern California

Amid triple-digit temperatures in some areas, brush fires scorched hundreds of acres of dry, Southern California terrain this week. The blaze had threatened homes on the Ventura County side of the fire, authorities said. Yet despite the hot, dry weather and the difficulty of maneuvering through ru...
