Norway museum to return artifacts

Norwegian explorer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl took thousands of artifacts from Easter Island in the 1950s and 1980s, and finally, a Norwegian museum is returning those artifacts to their rightful owners. At a special ceremony that was part of a visit by Norway’s King Harald V and Queen Sonja, an agreement was signed between representatives of the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo and officials of Chile’s culture ministry promising the return of the collection to Easter Island. The collection incl...

Gardeners Mourn the Closing of Beloved 89-Year-Old Garden Center

Yesterday my long-time favorite garden center announced it’ll close soon. Here’s my tribute to the company and its people on a local blog. I’m reposting it here for the Rant’s broader audience because the closing is part of a very sad national trend. Also, it shows what great independent garden centers are doing for customers and the community and why their disappearance is such a enormous loss. (Sob!)  It’s official. In today’s press release, Behnke Nurseries announced that after 89 years, it w...

New Report Indicates Bryan Singer Fired From ‘Red Sonja’ Movie

Last month, we got word that Red Sonja was on hold in the wake of even more sexual misconduct allegations against director Bryan Singer. Now, it looks like Singer is officially off the movie. The news of Singer’s removal came unceremoniously, buried within a much larger story about a completely different topic. Now let us all cross our fingers and hope we never have to hear about Bryan Singer again. THR has a lengthy piece this week about the scandal surrounding Warner Bros. head Kevin Tsuji...

Sundance Film Review: ‘Sonja: The White Swan’

When Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie zipped into Hollywood, she was a talent the industry had never seen before, or since — a three-time Olympic ladies’ singles champion (a record she continues to hold) whose chipper, if chilly romantic comedy hits kept Twentieth Century-Fox solvent in the build-up to World War II, in part because […]

Sacha's Photos of Our Stay in Seattle

There is a connection between people who love one another that runs deeper than time and space, a bond that unites in an unseen world that intertwines memories, moments collected unknowingly, the essences of love that cannot be defined by words.  I am holding on to that invisible cord that wraps around me with my family and friends. Leaving is never easy. Goodbyes trigger the space that I know will be between us, the ache of senses that go unfilled. That space that I must put back into the ...
