Rio Linda Man Finds Lost Journal With Heartfelt Letters From Grandma To Granddaughter

RIO LINDA (CBS13) – A Rio Linda man says he found a lost journal filled with emotional letters from a grandmother to her granddaughter. “People can look at it and be like oh it’s just book; it’s just a diary; it’s just pages. But it’s what’s written in it,” Luis Martinez said. Martinez found the journal a couple of weeks ago in a truck set for the auction block at the car auction facility he works. “There was a bunch of trash in it and this was sitting right there on the seat. I grabbed it and s...

Qualified immunity makes a mockery of justice. Abolish it.

If a government agent clearly violates your constitutional rights, you ought to be able to sue the government agent. Unfortunately, the United States Supreme Court-invented doctrine of qualified immunity serves to shield government agents from being held personally liable. Section 1983 Civil Rights Act of 1871 explicitly states that government agents who subject Americans “to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws, shall be liable to the par...

Coronavirus testing is dropping in US, even as deaths mount

By MATTHEW PERRONE, NICKY FORSTER and MICHELLE LIU | Associated Press U.S. testing for the coronavirus is dropping even as infections remain high and the death toll rises by more than 1,000 a day, a worrisome trend that officials attribute largely to Americans getting discouraged over having to wait hours to get a test and days or weeks to learn the results. An Associated Press analysis found that the number of tests per day slid 3.6% over the past two weeks to 750,000, with the count falling in...

Waiting for Rain

A Hurricane is supposedly coming up from the Caribbean. It looks like it will bounce off North Carolina and South Carolina, and then grind its way up to Newport News, Virginia. I doubt we will get much water, but the Canal keepers are vigilant, and are dumping water out of the Canal in precaution. The side gate to the creek was opened for that water to flow a few hundred yards to the river, and water was being dumped through the lock lock too.  The white Lock House at the end of the se...

Excide – “Actualize” & “Radiation Reel”

Excide are a band whose members come from North and South Carolina, and their sound is a chunky, melodic, exciting take on hardcore. This is a band that knows how to groove and bounce, and they've got a way with vast, anthemic singalong choruses. But they also make some real blood-in-your-eyes mosh music. When I … More »

Smile more? Some see sexism in debate over Biden VP pick

By SARA BURNETT and ALEXANDRA JAFFE | Associated Press CHICAGO — She’s too ambitious. She’s not apologetic enough. She should smile more. The debate over Joe Biden’s running mate has recently ticked through a familiar list of stereotypes about women in politics as the Democratic presidential candidate and his allies stumble through a search they had hoped would stand out for its inclusion and diversity. Instead, the vice presidential vetting has resurfaced internal party divisions between the ol...

HHS’ Last-Minute Order To Hospitals On COVID Data Created Weeks Of Chaos

Leslie Porth, a senior vice president at the Missouri Hospital Association, began a statewide conference call on July 15 with an apology.  Just two days earlier, the Trump administration had sent a letter to hospital administrators, telling them that by the 15th, they would need to stop submitting COVID-19 data to the CDC’s National Health Safety Network — a years-old survey backed by some of the government’s top epidemiologists. Instead, they were told to begin sending it to Tel...

I knew this was coming, and I'm expecting a lot more of this: "Let’s Scrap the Presidential Debates."

That particular example is by Elizabeth Drew and appears in the NYT today. I haven't read this yet, but I anticipate that it will not admit to a motivation to shield Biden from a test of his mental acuity:The debates have never made sense as a test for presidential leadership. In fact, one could argue that they reward precisely the opposite of what we want in a president. When we were serious about the presidency, we wanted intelligence, thoughtfulness, knowledge, empathy and, to be sure, likabi...

Tropical Storm Isaias Strengthens As It Moves Up The East Coast

VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Bands of heavy rain from Isaias lashed Florida’s east coast Sunday, with the tropical storm strengthening slightly and forecast to be near hurricane strength by the time it reaches the Carolinas. Officials dealing with surging cases of the coronavirus in Florida kept a close watch on the storm that was weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm Saturday afternoon, but still brought heavy rain and flooding to Florida’s Atlantic coast. The National Hurricane Center ad...

On the Ground at the Portland Protests: A Secular Silent Night

The first sign that something was up came from my Lyft driver, Shawn. At O’Hare, I had seen little to confirm the stereotype beyond a guy doing yoga at the gate. On the flight, I saw mostly young families and middle-aged to older folks. And, even when we descended into Portland, I could see no billowing plumes of smoke, destroyed cop cars, or shattered storefronts, just the city’s picturesque setting in the Pacific Northwest, soaking up the sunlight on an ordinary Thursday. But Shawn, a black gen...
