Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A Novel

While novelizations of popular movies have long existed (especially before the advent of home video), Quentin Tarantino’s novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the first example I can find of a filmmaker adapting their own movie for the page. Alright, let’s not get too far into Auteur theory here; filmmaking is an inherently collaborative medium, but few would dispute that Tarantino was the true guiding force of the film. So this adaptation has an inherent hook that the usual, perhaps...

Whicker: Warren Spahn was a once-a-century phenomenon

It was a sleepy Sunday morning, not a time for challenges, in what was then called San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. The Phillies were taking batting practice against a celebrity pitcher, an old man who couldn’t kick out the footlights as he once did. But Mike Schmdt and Joe Morgan and the others kept looking for those 80-mph, loosen-me-up straight balls. The guy wasn’t doing business like that. He was coming inside, changing speeds, even throwing a screwball. He was grinding. Warren Spahn was 62. ...
