Unknown objects at the heart of the Milky Way are beaming radio signals, then mysteriously disappearing

The radio telescope at the Parkes Observatory at sunset near the town of Parkes, Australia, July 15, 2019.Stefica Nicol Bikes/Reuters Mysterious radio waves emanating from the center of the galaxy have astronomers stumped. Four objects have briefly emitted radio signals that don't resemble any known type of star. Scientists think each of the four signals could come from a new type of object unknown to astronomy. Ziteng Wang found a needle in an astronomical haystack.Wang, a physics PhD st...

Discovery of new type of supernova explains ancient mystery

Astronomers confirm the existence of the theorized electron-capture supernova. The discovery was based on observing a supernova in 2018.An electron-capture supernova likely explains a mysterious sky event from 1054 AD.Astronomers found evidence for a new type of supernova, confirming a theory from over 40 years ago. The discovery expands our knowledge of the life cycle of stars and may explain the formation of the famous Crab Nebula. A primer on supernovae Supernovae are gigantic, extremely bri...

Giant hidden black hole discovered only 1.4 billion years after the Big Bang

Black holes are some of the most bizarre objects in the Universe but their existence is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity of Albert Einstein. The discovery by Roger Penrose in the 1960s was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020, along with the more recent discovery of Andrea Ghez and Reinhard Genzel of a giant black hole at the center of our Galaxy with a mass millions of times that of the sun.Scientists have known for some time that much larger black holes with m...

Astronomers discover extreme planet which rains rocks, has lava seas and 3,000 mph winds

Astronomers have discovered the most inhospitable planet ever that rains rocks, with 60 mile deep lava seas and winds of more than 3,000 mph. The Earth size planet has winds four times the speed of sound with temperatures of about 3,000 degrees Centigrade on one side - hot enough to vaporise rock. But they plunge to below minus 200C on the other - cold enough to freeze nitrogen. The bizarre exoplanet also harbours a vast ocean of magma - more than 60 miles deep. Named K2-141b, it lies around 200...

Scientists author papers in Nature Astronomy chronicling legacy of Spitzer space telescope

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, decommissioned earlier this year, made important discoveries about comets, stars, exoplanets and distant galaxies, leaving a lasting legacy of solar system science. A team of more than a dozen scientists from the US and Europe collaborated on two review papers published in the journal Nature Astronomy inventorying the major discoveries made possible by Spitzer.

NASA shuts down the incredible Spitzer Space Telescope

One of NASA's most important telescopes has been put to sleep in space. The infrared Spitzer Space telescope made a number of science-shaking discoveries over the course of its 16-year lifespan. Without Spitzer, we wouldn't know about the TRAPPIST-1 exoplanets. It was one of NASA's four Great Observatories. Each of the telescopes was tuned to its own wavelength of light, watching the universe in its own way. Together, the quartet presented to scientists a universe of unprecedented detail. Ther...

Spitzer Space Telescope Turns Out the Lights

Long-time Slashdot reader Kreuzfeld writes: Thursday marks the final mission of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. Conceived of as an infrared-optimized "Great Observatory," Spitzer has spent the last 6002 days providing Earthlings with an unprecedented view into other galaxies, our own solar system, and (unexpected to its designers!) planets around other stars. But in its Earth-trailing solar orbit, Spitzer is now over 1.5 astronomical units from the Earth: radio transmissions are increasingly d...

NASA decommissions Spitzer Space Telescope after 16 years of service

NASA is flipping the switch on the Spitzer Space Telescope today. The observatory has made groundbreaking discoveries about the universe since its launch in 2003, from imaging some of the oldest stars in the universe to detecting the light reflected by exoplanets. The Spitzer was previously scheduled to go offline in 2018, but has continued operating due to NASA's followup telescope being postponed. With the James Webb Space Telescope nearing completion, Spitzer's mission is over.

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope is retiring after 16 years. Its incredible infrared images revealed nebulae and galaxies as we'd never seen before.

One of NASA's most powerful space telescopes, the Spitzer Space Telescope, retires today after 16 years. Spitzer measured infrared light, which allowed it to see through clouds of gas and dust in space. The telescope generated some of the most awe-inspiring images that we have of nebulae and galaxies, and led to many groundbreaking discoveries. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Saying Goodbye

NASA will say goodbye to Spitzer Space Telescope when the craft is decommissioned on January 30. Spitzer, shown here in an artist's concept against an infrared sky, has studied the infrared universe since shortly after its launch, in August 2003. It was launched into an orbit around that Sun that has carried it farther and farther from Earth. It has reached a distance at which it is difficult and expensive to operate, NASA says, so the agency is ending Spitzer's mission. [NASA/JPL/Caltech]

NASA May Have Found the Goldilocks Planet of Goldilocks Planets: TOI 700 d

If you ask astronomers how many planets in the universe harbor life, they will likely say there are only two possible answers: one or infinity. We can rule out zero, thanks to the decidedly alive Earth, which means that so far one is the answer. But if we discover another, the answer jumps straight past two to infinity. The reason: You can posit a universe in which the confluence of factors that made life possible here are so complex that the right roll of the dice could statistically happe...
