There Will Be No Spoleto Festival USA This Year

“After spending about $4.5 million that can’t be recovered, [the] Festival now must cope with a projected $756,000 deficit for 2020. (It did manage to avoid spending another $4.5 million that had been budgeted.)” No job cuts or furloughs are planned, and much of this year’s programming will be moved to 2021. – The Post and Courier (Charleston)

Reconsidering The Audience-Artist Contract (Let's Stop Walking Out On Work We Don't Get)

Maura Hogan, in a Spoleto Festival USA post-mortem: "Perhaps some among us view our annual arts dive as simply transactional. The customer is always right, so we can bolt from or belittle performances as we see fit. I would argue that we are missing the point. Ditching a performance mid-show is at best disruptive, and […]

Geoff Nuttall There aren’t many cities in the American south where it can be fairly said that chamber music is more popular than shrimp and grits and Charleston is one of them. Each year, beginning in late May (May 25, this year), the historic Dock Street Theatre becomes home to the Bank of America Chamber Music series—11 unique programs, 33 total concerts—performed over a two-week period during Spoleto Festival USA. “The Dock Theater seats about 450 people. The director said "he plans to concentrate on his other job, leading the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, S.C." What will happen to the Lincoln Center Festival? New Music at Spoleto Festival USA 2017

We are a little spoiled here in Charleston, the biggest little city in America, so if the new music portion of Spoleto Festival USA 2017 is a little less adventuresome than last season’s 40th anniversary program (which featured a production of The Little Match Girl by Helmut Lachenmann as well as a ravishing new production of Porgy & Bess), it may be that our expectations have reached impossible limits. Which is not to say there aren’t plenty of goodies still to be had.  Here are some of the pro...
