Will huge LAUSD parcel tax measure start a statewide trend?

Local elections held in odd-numbered years in California don’t generally have much meaning outside their immediate communities. But a June 4 vote scheduled in Los Angeles might be different. This is a yes/no decision on a huge parcel tax proposed by the local school district, the second largest in America. So nothing should divert voter attention away from the parcel tax vote, and a very light turnout can be expected. A large portion of those who vote may belong to groups standing to benefit fro...

Deontay Wilder may be a jerk, but he’ll still KO Dominic Breazeale

Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is a jerk for running his mouth the way he has ahead of his title defense against Dominic Breazeale on Saturday from Barclays Center in Brooklyn (on Showtime). Wilder had this to say to reporters during a workout Tuesday night at famed Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn: “His life is on the line for this fight, and I do mean his life. I’m still trying to get me a body onmy record.” Say what? “Hey, Dominic Breazeale asked for this,” Wilder said. “I didn’t go seek him, h...

NBA playoff ratings slide as LeBron sits out the postseason

LeBron James’ tumultuous first tour of duty with the Los Angeles Lakers cast a long shadow over the NBA’s regular-season ratings results, and the absence of the league’s most singular talent appears to be having an impact on the playoff deliveries as well. Through the first 48 games of the NBA postseason, playoff telecasts are averaging 2.92 million viewers and a 1.9 household rating, which marks a 14 percent decline compared to the year-ago draw of 3.4 million viewers and a 2.2 rating. The Clippers’ front office will remain intact after assistant General Manager Trent Redden decided to remain in L.A. after meeting with the New Orleans Pelicans about a high-ranking job, as was first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and confirmed by a league source. Redden will continue his work with Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, President Lawrence Frank and GM Michael Winger, who recently turned down a chance to interview for the Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations po...

Steve Kerr: Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry both questionable for Game 1 with sprained ankles

Walking the Staples Center hallway after the Warriors eliminated the Clippers Friday night, both Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry showed a little bit of a limp after rolling their ankles during the game. Thompson's limp was more pronounced. Saturday, less than 24 hours before Golden State tips off round two against Houston, Warriors coach Steve Kerr didn't have a lot of new information but called both questionable for the game.

Whicker: John Havlicek’s legacy shows when Lou Williams leaps off the Clippers’ bench

LOS ANGELES — Most of the time, a life must end to earn its proper commemoration. Behold John Havlicek. He passed away Thursday, at 79. He was the Boston Celtics’ all-time scorer and one of the most habitual winners in basketball history. He played in eight NBA Finals and won eight championships. His Ohio State teams won an NCAA championship and were 78-6. He was a nonstop dervish on the court who could score from random parts of the parquet and was an All-Defense selection five times. He preced...

Citizens’ lawsuit to block LA Clippers arena in Inglewood can go to trial, judge rules

A lawsuit that could unwind the Los Angeles Clippers’ plans to move to Inglewood cleared a major roadblock this week. On Friday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mary Strobel ruled against efforts to quash the litigation, which accuses Inglewood of violating a state law requiring public agencies to give priority to affordable housing developers and other government entities when selling public land. A lawsuit filed by Uplift Inglewood, a group formed in response to rising housing costs, is now s...

7 Highly Questionable HHOF Selections

written by: BY BILL SCHOENINGER Founded in 1943, the Hockey Hall of Fame has inducted 381 players, coaches, executives, and officials for their tremendous contributions to the sport. While they all have left their mark on the game in various ways, some have accomplished more than others. Over the past few years, the committee inducted some players that have sparked a lot of debate. Many (myself included) believe they belong in the “Hall of Very Good” and not the Hall of Fame. W...

Clippers locked in, loose with their season on the line vs. Warriors

PLAYA VISTA — The Clippers, as Lou Williams judiciously put it, got their butts kicked in Game 3. But they didn’t lose their bearings or seem even to fret much, even against the superstar-studded, two-time defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors who had taken a 2-1 lead in a best-of-seven first-round series that, remember, they entered as 100-to-1 underdogs. Coach Doc Rivers and his team just kept working, inserting JaMychal Green, a capable shooter, into the lineup to further spread the fl...

Heisler: In Clippers’ biggest achievement, they’re no longer the local laughingstock

It was fun while it lasted … for one team in town, anyway. In an irony we should be getting used to by now, it was the Clippers who had all the fun in the 2018-19 season, likely as it is to end Wednesday against the Warriors, whom few ever doubted were massively superior. The now-defunct Lakers’ experience ceased being fun months ago, becoming disappointing and finally getting a lot worse than that. Try shocked, dismayed and overwhelmed after Magic Johnson bolted, showing how leaderless they had...

Whicker: Warriors remind Clippers they can beat them with defense too

LOS ANGELES — Mark Jackson was at Staples Center on Sunday. He was Golden State’s coach five years ago, when Donald T. Sterling finally fell like a despot’s statue, and the Clippers fought through a seven-game Western Conference first-round win. There was a lot of talk about that anniversary before this Game 4, with Clippers coach Doc Rivers recalling a shouting match with a Sterling associate that kept him from reaching the floor until the minute before tipoff. Both Rivers and Warriors coach St...

GM Michael Winger declined T’wolves interview, says he can’t imagine leaving Clippers

LOS ANGELES — Despite the Game 4 defeat, the youthful energy on display in the Clippers’ first-round playoff series on Sunday afternoon was something of a positive omen for the organization. Not, perhaps, for the immediate future – the Clippers trail 3-1 in the best-of-seven series and face elimination against the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors in Game 5 on Wednesday night in Oakland. But after that, in years to come. Clippers general manager Michael Winger said he appreciates...

As Klay Thompson thrives for Golden State ahead of free agency, his father is a vocal, yet hands-off supporter

LOS ANGELES — It’s not that Mychal Thompson doesn’t have a seat. It’s just hard to stay in it. When he’s attending one of his son’s games, the 64-year-old tends to wander up into the concourse, by the concessions. He’s been through this a lot: Klay Thompson has played in 105 playoff games now, one more than Mychal ever played in, and he’s got one more championship ring, too. Still, something about the experience frays at Mychal’s nerves. “I give him his space,” he said. “Let him focus in. I don’...

Danilo Gallinari expects better of himself, Clippers in Game 4 vs. Warriors

PLAYA VISTA — Doc Rivers isn’t worried about Danilo Gallinari. Neither is Danilo Gallinari. The only hint of concern came from the Golden State camp, where Warriors guard Klay Thompson told reporters at Staples Center that Gallinari is “capable of getting hot.” “You’ve just got to take away his space,” Thompson said. “He’s a great shooter and a great shooter wants to have some space, so we try to close that gap between him.” Gallinari went 2 for 13 from the field, 0 for 8 from 3-point range, and...

Whicker: The season of Montrezl Harrell isn’t over yet

LOS ANGELES — When you’re Montrezl Harrell and you’re from eastern North Carolina and you play like a ticked-off tractor-trailer with wings, you generally don’t escape football. Indeed, Harrell was a defensive end for North Edgecombe High. Every year he would line up against Tarboro High, which had Todd Gurley. “I played against him,” Harrell said, “but honestly, there wasn’t too much tackling going on. A little burst of speed, and he was out. We kicked off to him in the second half and he went ...

Heisler: Lakers sticking with family, but Kobe Bryant won’t be riding to the rescue

Imagine that. Playoff thrills locally, after all. It was supposed to be over by now. The Lakers left us months ago except for their managerial meltdown. The Clippers were supposed to be finished off by Golden State before anyone noticed they were in the postseason. Instead, in yet another miracle, the Clippers staged the biggest playoff comeback in NBA history, coming from 31 down to win Game 2 in Oakland to make a series of it, after making a season of it when no one expected that. Or, as Coach...

Kevin Durant, Warriors dominate Clippers in Game 3, take 2-1 series lead

LOS ANGELES — Oh yeah, that bear was ticked. Clippers hope to avoid having to mount staggering comebacks vs. Warriors

PLAYA VISTA — You’ve just set an NBA record for biggest postseason comeback in NBA history – what are you going to do next? Settle in for a critical film session, naturally. “We came back and what we did was historic, but the reality tells a whole different story,” said Coach Doc Rivers, whose team’s epic comeback evened their first-round Western Conference playoff series with the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors at 1-1. Game 3 is Thursday night at Staples Center. “The reality i...

Clippers’ Patrick Beverley sets the tone and never stops

LOS ANGELES — The nurse is growing concerned. “You cannot make those noises in a hospital,” she says to no one in particular. She’s in a hallway at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, hearing grunts and howls coming from a room in which a 14-year-old boy is in the process of taking down Patrick Beverley at Jenga. Beverley is not going quietly. On his second visit in a couple weeks to the Los Angeles hospital, the Clippers’ fiery guard and emotional leader has asked everyone in the party with him – Clip...

Munguia Vs. Hogan: Buried On A Busy Combat Sports Weekend, There Was A Boxing Robbery In Mexico

If you love combat sports, this past weekend kept you entertained. It was so busy, you may not have noticed there was a robbery in Monterrey, Mexico. The fight weekend began on Friday night with a dominant title defense from pound-for-pound contender Vasiliy Lomachenko as he destroyed an overmatched Anthony Crolla at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
