Asiana Tries to Shrink Its Way Out of Trouble

It has been — to be understated — a very bad year for Asiana, the second largest airline in South Korea. Years of increasing debt loads have finally caught up with the airline, and it is now trying to shrink its way back to a comfortable place. This is very much a work in progress, but you can expect a fair amount of upheaval as things move forward. Asiana started flying only in 1988, breaking up Korean Air’s monopoly as the hometown airline. By 1991 it was flying to the US (Los Angeles), ...

A Look at LAX’s Plans for Terminal 9 and Concourse 0

It’s been discussed for ages, but now the plans are real. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will (eventually) build a bunch more gates in Concourse 0 and Terminal 9. When done, this will eliminate all remote gates and allow for a more sensible organization at the airport between alliances while quite possibly snarling road traffic. But don’t expect this to happen any time soon. If it’s done by the 2028 Olympics, I’ll consider this to have been a speedy project. Though the optimal so...

Airline Pilot Used Fake License for 25 Years, Exposed After Taking ‘Strange Turns’ Over Swiss Alps

Star Alliance member and United Airlines partner South African Airways is promising to check the licenses of all of its pilots — and obtain copies from a government regulator instead of pilots just bringing in copies themselves — after discovering that one of their veteran long haul pilots had been using a forged license for 25 years. Is American about to Lose its Etihad Partnership to United? Redeem Miles Now.

There’s a great deal of discussion of a rumor that Etihad could sever ties with American Airlines and partner with United or even join Star Alliance instead. I first covered these discussions over the summer but now it's getting much broader attention. Continue reading Is American about to Lose its Etihad Partnership to United? Redeem Miles Now....

Airline Criticized for Questioning Flight Attendant About Prostitution and Porn

Star Alliance member EVA Air has one of the best business class products in the world but has been in the news lately for how a single passenger behaved inflight and whether the airline does enough to protect its flight attendants. Now there’s further criticism over the way the carrier approaches rumor and innuendo surrounding members of its cabin crew, based on an incident that occurred the very same day. oneworld Alliance Planning Its Own Network of Airport Lounges

Currently both Star Alliance and SkyTeam run their own lounges at some major airports.. This is a different management model rather than a new customer benefit, although it may lead to there being a single larger lounge in a major airport where alliance member airlines co-locate in the same terminal, versus multiple smaller lounges operated by individual carriers. oneworld hasn't done this to date but that's changing. Don’t Overlook Avianca’s Credit Card

Regular readers know that Avianca’s LifeMiles one of my favorite frequent flyer programs. It has access to awards across the Star Alliance. You can use their miles to redeem on airlines like United, Lufthansa, Thai, Asiana, Scandinavian, and Swiss. They’ve largely taken over the old US Airways role as the ‘official consolidator of Star Alliance premium class seats’. If there are excess seats on a Star Alliance airline, those airlines are — in effect — selling distressed inventory to LifeMiles m...

Lufthansa Devaluing Award Chart; Awards From Israel To The US Face A Whopping 67-86% Increase!

Lufthansa’s current award chart has some good values in it. They just published a new award chart going into effect on 5/9, but for now it appears that it’s only available in German. It’s not pretty. Domestic flights on Star Alliance partner United are currently a steal at 12K miles each way in coach and […]

EVA Air Business Class Has a New Soft Product That Really Is Like First Class

My own take on world's second best business class is Star Alliance member EVA Air based in Taipei. They should be on everyone’s radar because they also frequently have very good award availability from their US gateways and offer good connectivity into Asia. Already they offer great seats — reverse herringbone that’s similar to what Cathay Pacific has — but they take things a step beyond with pajamas, pre-order meals, great champagne, and quality amenity kits. And their service is top notch. Con...

Latin American Destinations Where Business Class Flights Are a Deal

Most frequent fliers try to rack up points in a loyalty program so they can upgrade to the front of the plane instead of enduring a cramped economy seat. What if you could actually just buy that business class flight instead though, and rack up more miles in the process? Maybe even get into the lounge before your flight takes off or on the layover? While it can easily cost you thousands of dollars to fly business class to Europe, the Middle East or Asia, getting to the front of the plane for L...

The best airport lounges in the US

If there is ever a time to splurge and treat yourself to lounge access, it’s during the holiday season, when airports around the United States are as busy as can be. ANA Introducing New First Class Suites With Doors

Star Alliance carrier ANA is introducing Airbus A380 service between Tokyo and Honolulu. The potential of the Tatas acquiring the beleaguered Jet Airways, raises a lot of questions. Boeing 787 Full of Passengers Held Up Until Passengers Came Up With $360 to Pay for Repairs

In 2012 an Air France flight bound for Beirut diverted to Damascas and passengers were forced to come up with cash for additional fuel. The pilot couldn’t use a company credit card because of financial sanctions imposed on Syria. So as insane as it sounds it’s not without precedent that passengers on a Star Alliance member LOT Polish Boeing 787 flight were asked to reach into their pockets to cover repair costs to the plane’s hydraulic pump before a Beijing to Warsaw journey could begin last Mon...

American Breaks Ground On An Extreme LAX Terminal Makeover

There was a big event in a hidden room in the bowels of Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) last week.  American Airlines officially “broke ground” on a massive $1.6 billion project to redo both Terminals 4 and 5.  This isn’t going to be a quick project — look for it to be mostly done by the time the Olympics arrive in a decade — but it will make a big difference for travelers once it’s complete.  It shows American’s long-term commitment to Los Angeles, something that I used to...

Star Alliance Member South African Airways Bankrupt, Asking For Another Government Bailout

South African received a bailout a year ago to help with a new CEO’s plan to stabilize the airline by convincing banks they would continue to exist. Despite government cash infusions the airline’s debts now exceed their assets. A report to the company’s board says the airline faces “rampant corruption, low pilot productivity, a significantly weak balance sheet, liquidity problems, loss of confidence from suppliers, a lack of critical skills and fragmented IT systems.” Continue reading Star Alli...

Singapore Airlines Non-Stop Business Class Awards Bookable With Air Canada Aeroplan Miles

Singapore Airlines usually makes premium cabin awards available only to their own KrisFlyer members. You can transfer points from Chase, American Express, and Citi into the KrisFlyer program, so their miles are relatively easy to get. If you want to fly Singapore's business or first class on more than an intra-Asia flight you aren't going to be able to use miles from United, Aeroplan, or other Star Alliance programs -- most of the time. Six years ago there was a brief window where Singapore A...
