Top 10 Best Office Chairs for Maximum Comfort

In 2012, a study found that we spend an average of 64 hours every week sitting on our gluteus maximus, the back to our fronts, more commonly known as our butt. That works out to about nine hours a day. That’s for an average person. If you work from home, it is likely going to be a much higher average number per day, depending on the day. While too much sitting every day can lead to health problems such as weight gain, poor blood circulation, and even diabetes having an occupation where sitting i...

How Steelcase's Munich-Based Learning + Innovation Center is Revitalizing the Way Designers Work

Do you think the below image depicts a living room hang-sesh or a business meeting? Image via SteelcaseIf you guessed living room hang-sesh, you're wrong.I recently had the pleasure of visiting Steelcase's Munich-based Learning + Innovation Center, which is a counterpart to the office furniture company's Grand Rapids HQ. As someone used to working in a traditional office setting and who spent many hours learning in dimly lit classrooms, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how bright and casual...

Stone's hiring continues CEO Jim Hackett's drive to push Ford closer to Silicon Valley. Shanks was a true gentleman of the car business and will be missed — but he can look forward to a well-deserved retirement. Jonathan Ward on Designing Without Corporate Interference, and Where Icon Could Go

In design school, we're taught that our greatest struggles will be design-based: Find the form. Improve the function. Source the best materials. Figure out the manufacturability. But spend a few years working in industrial design, and you'll often find those aren't the greatest struggles at all. Your greatest challenge is named Dennis and he's an uncooperative engineer. Or Nancy in Marketing, Greg from Accounting, Susan in Operations, The Client. A lot of times it seems like designers are t...

Editor’s Choice for Best of Year 2018: Simple, Sleek, Surreal

It’s fair to say 2018 was marked by uncertainty—politically, socially, and morally. Designers and architects responded to modern life with varied antidotes. Some returned to simplicity. Others got sleek. And then there were those brave few that sought refuge in the strange. 1. Silq by Steelcase Silq is the first of the Simple designs I loved this past year. A wonderful alternative to ever-adjustable ergonomic chairs, the intuitive Silq is surprisingly simple. A carbon fiber frame enables Silq t...

Sunglasses That Block All the Screens Around You

Scott Blew, an entrepreneur and engineer, recalled an article he'd recently read in WIRED about a new kind of film that blocked the light emitted from screens. He wondered if the same technology might work on a pair of glasses, to block the screens that seemed to be everywhere. From a report: He contacted Steelcase, the company that made the Casper screen-blocking film, and ordered a sample. Then he popped out the lenses in a pair of cheap sunglasses and replaced them with the film. Amazingly, i...

Joey Zeledón Explains Emotional Ergonomics and How You Can Fit Them into Your Design Process

It's easy to focus on the big picture—so much so that we often lose track of small details that make a whole world of difference, especially in the design process. Seasoned industrial designer Joey Zeledón has taken a step back from this natural tendency to focus on emotional ergonomics in his new book, Touchy/Feely. Touchy/Feely is not only a call to action for designers to consider and understand small but common human to product interactions, but it also isolates and defines a key part in the...

How Posture Can Make You More Creative

Most of us remember our parents chiding us to “Sit up straight.” Honestly, they probably just cared about us not looking like a slouch, but they also implied good posture was better for our health. I’m not talking about having good posture. I’m talking about how different postures are helpful for differe...
