PORTERS LAKE, N.S. — Nova Scotia fire crews continue to battle an out-of-control blaze that has forced the evacuation of 523 homes in an area east of Halifax.David Steeves of the province's lands and forestry department says the wildfire in the Porters Lake area is now 60 per cent contained and about 50 hectares in size, up from an earlier estimate of 45 hectares. He says some areas are difficult to access, making the battle "a challenge." But he says fire crews "are going to bite and claw f...

Minnesota Advances to Big Ten Semis with 3-2 Win Over Notre Dame

Photo by Scott W. Grau/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images MINNEAPOLIS – Earlier this season, Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach Bob Motzko talked about how much his young team has grown up during this second-half run. With everything the Gophers had to overcome in the Big Ten quarterfinals, it’s safe to say they’re an even more mature group after moving within two victories of an improbable NCAA tournament berth. Two power-play goals by Ben Meyers helped fuel a second-period onslaught by #...

Minnesota Ends Conference Play on A Strong Note with Win Over Notre Dame

MIINEAPOLIS – As has been the case for most of the season, fans have seen both sides of the Minnesota Golden Gophers during weekend series. One night, they tend to play underachieving, then during the other you see how dangerous they can be. It makes you think, “This team is hard to read.” Such was the case again this weekend, as Minnesota put Friday night’s miserable performance behind them with a more solid effort on both ends of the rink on Saturday night, defeating the #16 Notre Dame F...

Frozen Four Preview: Notre Dame

OK, I've done my duty to see this Notre Dame team play live. I hope I never have to do it again.— Chris Dilks (@ChrisDilks) January 27, 2018 Even as I was writing this tweet, I had a pretty good feeling that I would be seeing the Irish play again. Notre Dame’s style of play is conservative to the point of tedium. But they play that way because it works. They’re a team founded on the principle that if they can eliminate odd-man rushes against, and limit the number of quality shots ...

"Dot" - Straddling two separate worlds

By Judd Hollander Most people, whether they want to admit it or not, routinely exist in two separate planes of existence. The first being life as it actually is, while the second is life as they want it to be. Or, more accurately, the way they wish life could be. Facing this confluence, and being forced to deal with it, is at the heart of Coleman Domingo's funny, powerful, touching, and somewhat overlong Dot, now at the Vineyard Theatre. At her mother's home in West Philadelphia shortly ...

Aisle View: Connecting the Dots

Sharon Washington, Marjorie Johnson and Finnerty Steeves in Colman Domingo's Dot. Photo: Carol Rosegg Dot, at the Vineyard, is another one of those dysfunctional-adults-returning-to-the-family home-to-deal-with-a-sick-parent plays. But it is a good one; Colman Domingo has created an engaging--and yes, deeply troubled--trio of siblings and provided the audience with nonstop laughter, all the while approaching the mother sinking into dementia with tender sensitivity. Plays of this type can b...
