8 Ways The Grateful Dead Have Become An American Brand

While their music may not be to everyone's taste, there's no denying that the The Grateful Dead have been incredibly successful, not only in their musical career, but also in leveraging their success into an iconic American brand. _________________________ Guest post by Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media Strategies Truth be told, I was never much of a Grateful Dead fan.  My tastes leaned more British Invasion – the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Kinks, and the Who.  And my idea of great bands ...

Mark O’Meara endures travel woes to play in familiar surroundings

NEWPORT BEACH – It seems fitting that World Golf Hall of Famer Mark O’Meara, 62, made a triumphal return to Orange County this week after becoming the fourth-oldest champion in the 39-year history of PGA Tour Champions this past Sunday in Tucson. But what a long, strange, exhausting trip it was for O’Meara to get here to compete in the rebranded Hoag Classic, which opens Friday at Newport Beach Country Club. After staying up most of Sunday night to answer the “550 text messages and 120 emails” c...

'Captain America: The First Avenger' Stands Out in a Glut of Comic Book Films

None Discussions of the mythical "superhero fatigue" were in full swing in the summer of 2011, and the concept has been raised every time a superhero film is considered a critical or commercial disappointment. The basis of superhero fatigue is the idea that audiences will grow tired of the neverending glut of big-budget comic book films, and will stop seeing them en masse. It's quaint to think of film bloggers in 2011 foretelling the imminent implosion of the genre when, seven years later, mega...

KLOS’s new DJ-led show The Mash Pit is mixing classic rock with club beats

On the day the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” hit theaters, Los Angeles radio station KLOS was playing plenty of Queen’s best-known work, including “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Another One Bites the Dust” as well as tracks from classic rock staples like Heart and Journey. That’s hardly surprising, but here’s what you might not expect: This was all happening on KLOS’ DJ-driven mix show The Mash Pit, and its host DJ Paul V. was taking these well-known hits and smashing them to...

Sherrod Brown: ‘If Stacey Abrams Doesn’t Win In Georgia, They Stole It’

ATLANTA (AP) — As Democrats ratcheted up their attacks on Georgia Republican Brian Kemp, he claimed Wednesday that results certified by county election officials confirm he has an “insurmountable lead” in the governor’s race. At a news conference, Georgia Democrats cast doubt on the legitimacy of any election count that ends with the former secretary of state being certified as the winner of a fiercely fought election against Stacey Abrams, who’s seeking to become the first black woman electe...

Rossi 357 lever carbine thoughts

Some thoughts and mini review on the Rossi 357 magnum, 24" stainless octagonal barrel. I had one as a loaner for a while and took the plunge recently. Idea is to run subsonic ammo for plinking and hunting, with long term ammo stockpiles. Also keep some hotter 357 loads on hand for more serious medium game- or invading zombaliens. I have heavier centrefires but they see less and less use for personal use these days, prefer to save what is left of my hearing for work related firearm use. Anyway s...

Guns N’ Roses play loud, lively and long at Staples Center

[See image gallery at buzzbands.la] With the band firing on all cylinders, Gun N’ Roses’ 3-hour, 20-minute marathon Friday night at Staples Center hit all the high notes from their catalog and featured some choice covers. It wasn’t exactly Guns N’ Roses that rocked the Staples Center crowd Friday night, but it was a reasonably excellent facsimile thereof. With its end near, The Sound 100.3 turns to Jesus (literally) in its promos

The Sound (100.3 FM) may be on the way out to make room for a syndicated Christian pop music format, but programmer Dave Beasing and the on-air staff are planning to go out with a bang. The playlist is opening up a bit, special on-air features are planned, and soon the station will play a classic rock A to Z feature, with no idea how far it will get because no one knows the exact date the new owners will take over. Best guess: Some time between late October and mid November. And then there are t...

Stream: Jesse Jo Stark, ‘Deadly Doll’

Jesse Jo Stark emerged in 2014 as a sultry-voiced roots-rocker, the Steve Jones-produced “Down Your Drain” EP projecting a little bad-girl mystique. Stark’s next act only deepens the mystique — the new single “Deadly Doll” summons some Western folk noir as she comes out of the mist like a sepia-toned femme fatale. The new song, co-written with Chris Garcia (Lana Del Rey, Demi Lovato) and produced by Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), is from Stark’s forthcoming EP. The title comes from a book of phrases s...

Tech Companies Banish Extremists After Deadly Charlottesville Attack

NEW YORK (AP) — It took bloodshed in Charlottesville to get tech companies to do what civil rights groups have been calling for for years: take a firmer stand against accounts used to promote hate and violence. In the wake of the deadly clash at a white-nationalist rally last weekend in Virginia, major companies such as Google, Facebook and PayPal are banishing a growing cadre of extremist groups and individuals for violating service terms. What took so long? For one thing, tech companies have l...
