Facebook Messenger is getting a design overhaul that is soon rolling out to users, TechCrunch reports. The redesign has two significant changes: the removal of the Discover tab, which houses chatbots from games and brands; and an increased emphasis on Facebook Stories. By prioritizing Stories in the Messenger app, Facebook is likely trying to replicate the success it found after bringing the feature to Instagram. We Are Social’s Tuesday Tweakup #33

TV ad spend set to decline as digital sees continued growth A has predicted that US TV ad spend will decline a further half percent in 2018, fuelled by ‘cord-cutting’ and related trends among younger audiences, and will sit at around $69.87 billion by the end of the year. This drop would bring US TV’s share of overall ad spend down to less than a third (31.6%). The trend is expected to continue until 2022, with the exception of 2020 when the US presidential election is set to bring viewing rat...

Instagram has unreleased “nametag” scanning, adds # & @ links to profiles

Instagram may copy Snapchat’s QR Snapcode scanning, judging by files buried in the Instagram Android app’s files. Meanwhile, today it’s starting to let users link to hashtags and other accounts from their profile. “Nametag scan” images indicate Instagram might want to let you aim your phone’s camera at a visual code to open someone’s profile. Instagram declined to comment, but the last time we reported portrait mode files that were hidden inside Instagram, it was spotted testing a “Focus” portra...

Instagram tests resharing of others’ posts to your Story

Instagram purposefully lacks a “Regram” button to promote original sharing, but it’s easing up on that philosophy when it comes to Stories. 4 Reasons Marketers Should Embrace Instagram Over Snapchat

The race between Snapchat and Instagram might finally have a clear winner. Adweek recently announced that Instagram Stories, an Instagram feature considered to be in direct competition with Snapchat, now has 250 million daily active users—more than Snapchat’s entire user base. But even more impressive than Instagram’s number of daily users is the speed at which the app continues to grow compared to its competitor. According to Apptopia, Snapchat lost six percent of its daily users from May 2016...

Snapchat's Not-Growing Pains Are Good News for Instagram

Facebook once failed to buy Snapchat; ever since, it's tried to copy it, mostly without success. Until now. Facebook's Instagram Stories, a clear Snapchat clone, has more daily users than Snapchat itself -- and parent company Snap Inc. should be very worried. Snap's latest earnings report isn't helping either. On Thursday, the company said user growth for the April-June period was a paltry 4 percent from the previous quarter. Snap's stock, already down 44 percent since its initial public offer...

Instagram snaps Snapchat’s hold on millennials

Stories are dead. Long live Stories. Instagram announced earlier this week that its Stories feature has over 200 million daily users. As my colleague Napier pointed out, that’s at least 40 million more than Snapchat’s last reported number. I think we can safely say Instagram and Facebook have Snapchat beaten. 158 million active users is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s worth noting that Snapchat’s meteoric growth slowed considerably when Instagram Stories rolled out. For an app that’s never turned...

Facebook gives zero fucks about cloning Snapchat, adds geostickers in Instagram

Instagram now has geostickers similar to those found on Snapchat. Why? Because parent company Facebook has apparently given its last fuck. Instagram today announced the introduction of geostickers to Stories. When you post a new image to your Instagram Story, you can add a sticker of the locale it was taken. This is pretty much the same as Snapchat’s geostickers, only with subtle design differences. Since launching Stories, Instagram has not-so-secretly started poaching Snapchat’s best features....
