Epstein accusers praise prosecutor who stepped in after Trump sacked predecessor

Audrey Strauss, the prosecutor who decided to arrest Ghislaine Maxwell, acted with lightning speed just days after her predecessor was unceremoniously fired by Donald Trump. Geoffrey Berman, the outgoing US attorney for the Southern District of New York, had presided over a long inquiry which had seen him make a series of high profile public statements about the Duke of York, including that the duke was offering "zero co-operation". On June 20, Mr Trump ejected Mr Berman and Ms Strauss, 72, his ...

Student-led accelerator Envision is shaking up which startups get funded

Meet Envision, a new startup accelerator. The group, built and run by a collection of students and recent graduates, just closed the application process for its first cohort of startups. Its goal isn’t merely to find some companies and give them a boost, however. According to Annabel Strauss and Eliana Berger, two co-founders of Envision, it’s to shake up the diversity stats that we’ve all come to know. “We started Envision because we believe in a future where womxn, Black, and Latinx founder...

Unoriginal Joke (Part III): Living Constitutionalism and Social Progress

Charles Barzun In the last   Part   of this series, I suggested that the essential nugget at the heart of “living constitutionalism” is the idea that part of what grounds the constitution’s authority for us is its capacity to adapt (i.e., to respond appropriately) to changing circumstances. I called this the   adaptability claim. Different versions of living constitutionalism fill out the adaptability claim in different ways, for different reasons.     But in my view, one quite tra...

More On Bill Barr’s Friday Night Caper

As we noted this morning, we still don’t know what was so urgent or important that Bill Barr tried to force the ouster of the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York on Friday evening, even going so far as to lie in a series of press releases and letters about what US Attorney Geoff Berman had done (resigned; he hadn’t) or what President Trump had done (fired Berman; he denied it). But another critical question is why Barr thought he could trust the US Attorney from the District of New...

The new top federal prosecutor in Manhattan on Monday announced her first case since the weekend's upheaval: the arrest of a U.S. Army soldier charged with plotting a deadly ambush of his unit in Turkey by extremists. In a release, Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss called Private Ethan Melzer, 22, of Louisville, Kentucky, “the enemy within.” Strauss said he plotted to let members of an extremist group descend on his unit by providing details about its location and security arrangements.

The right book at the right time: Richard Albert on constitutional "adaptation"

For the Symposium on Richard Albert, Constitutional Amendments: Making, Breaking, and Changing Constitutions (Oxford University Press, 2019).  Almost 125 years ago, the great British scholar Albert Venn Dicey wrote that "the plain truth is that a thinker who explains how constitu tions are amended inevitably touches upon one of the central points  of constitutional law." He was correct, but it is a sad truth that such efforts at explanation have not, with a few exceptions noted below, bee...

Coronavirus-Related Disruption: Creating Effective Family Routine When Homebound

(CNN) — When the official word finally came that they closed our kids’ schools “indefinitely” — my new least favorite word — my wife and I had the same thought: We need a schedule! The answer to chaos is routine, right? We can’t have the kids sitting around in their pajamas, eating cereal, watching cartoons and bickering all day, like a Disney remake of “Lord of the Flies.” We called a family meeting that very evening. And we were reassuring and honest as we talked about what we each of us neede...
