Ski atop the worlds cleanest waste-to-energy plant in Copenhagen

Six years after breaking ground, CopenHill — a waste-to-energy plant topped with a year-round ski slope — is officially open, marking a major milestone in Copenhagen’s journey to becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral city by 2025. Bjarke Ingels Group, SLA, AKT, Lüchinger+Meyer, MOE and Rambøll designed the new architectural landmark that they describe as the cleanest waste-to-energy plant in the world. The building includes an environmental education hub as well as a landscaped roof for urba...

Garcetti pledges L.A. will recycle 100% of wastewater by 2035

LOS ANGELES – Mayor Eric Garcetti pledged last week that Los Angeles will recycle 100 percent of its wastewater by 2035 as part of an effort to reduce the city’s dependence on imported water. “Conservation is about more than how we respond to a dry year — it should shape how we prepare our city for tomorrow,” Garcetti said. “Maximizing L.A.’s recycling capacity will increase the amount of water we source locally, and help to ensure that Angelenos can count on access to clean water for generation...

Dubai’s Sustainable City to go B100 for second construction phase

In the UAE, The Sustainable City, the Middle East’s first fully operational sustainable community, has adopted B100 biodiesel to fuel the construction of the new buildings in phase 2 including Fairgreen International School, Hotel Indigo, and the innovation centre. The renewable fuel alternative is manufactured from the used cooking oil consumed by the restaurants at the community plaza, and will allow The Sustainable City to reduce its carbon footprint by up to 150 tons of carbon dioxide per ye...

The United Arab Emirates is building a $354 million city with driverless cars, greenhouses, and solar-powered villas

For much of the 20th century, the  United Arab Emirates  was known as one of the world's biggest oil producers and, as a result, greenhouse-gas emitters. But in the past two decades, the UAE   government has made an effort to lower its own dependency on fossil fuels, shifting toward more environmentally-friendly sources to power its cities. The UAE aims to have 75% of Dubai's energy come from clean sources by 2050. If the city pulls that off, it would have the smallest carbon footprint in the ...

Futuristic green city design runs like a real rainforest in Malaysia

If money were no object, what would the ideal city of the future look like? Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) answered that question with a spectacular design for the Forest City, a proposed masterplan for a new city in Malaysia. This 20-square-kilometer green smart city would be built around a central rainforest and mimic the forest’s ecosystem by adopting a closed loop system that reuses all its resources and controls out-flow. Winner of the second place prize in an international...

Past This Absurd Election and Toward the Sustainable City

While this train wreck of a national election comes to its long awaited conclusion, I keep thinking about how the world is changing and how little this election reflects the reality of the world around us. Technology has changed our economy, communication systems, society, and lifestyles, a set of facts unobserved by our national politics. Human history is in many ways a story of the evolution of our social interaction and the development of the technology that affects our daily lives. How we be...

Mass Transit in the Sustainable City

Anyone moving to a part of New York City that has subway service is advised to be sure they live within walking distance of that subway. The part of Brooklyn I grew up in had none, and back then we were also in a "two-fare zone"; we paid one fare on the bus to get to the subway, and another to board the subway at the Kings Highway stop. Today, people are allowed a free transfer from bus to subway and about 80% of New York's commuters get to work by mass transit. While many New Yorkers own cars, ...

The world's first "Tesla Town" with solar roofs and Powerwalls is coming to Australia

Developers in Australia just announced plans to build the world's first "Tesla town" - a small suburb off Melbourne's business district where every house will have a solar roof and a built-in Tesla Powerwall. The project has been hailed as one of the most environmentally sustainable developments in Australia, and for good reason. Residents can expect to see their water use reduced by 43%, landfill contributions will be reduced by 80%, and the solar panels are expected to generate so much electr...
