Review: Sharing a House with the Never-Ending Man

A unique and often frustrating aspect of English-speaking anime fandom is the fact that, for all the reams of paper written about Japanese animation in English, it’s only a fraction of the amount of information available in Japanese. When fans try to learn about the behind-the-scenes production of their favorite series, it’s like trying to map out a house by looking through a keyhole. Of course, this is why so many famous creators and studios spawn pervasive (and often flat-out inaccurate) fan...

M Power: Giving the BMW K100RS a modern edge

A few years ago, building a cafe racer usually meant imbuing it with a sense of nostalgia. But these days, the custom scene is just as much about modernizing older motorcycles. So we’re seeing more and more builds that combine sharp lines and a sense of minimalism, with performance upgrades matched to ‘neo-retro’ looks. This deft BMW K100 from Motocrew, the one-man custom shop of Chris Scholtka, is a textbook example of the trend. Based in Cottbus, southeast of Berlin, Chris is a firefighter ...

Haojue DR300 Could Pave the Way for the Suzuki GSX-S300

A New Small GSX-S300 Haojue is Suzuki’s partner in China and it just launched a new DR300 in its home market. Now the rumor is that Suzuki will take this Haojue DR300 and turn it into a new GSX-S300. The Indian publication Gaadi Waadi reported that this rumor has some merit. Suzuki needs a new small-displacement bike for its GSX line, and the DR300 would fill that space well. The bike offers a liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine that chugs out about 28 hp. The bike has KYB front forks and a prel...

Triumph releases e-bicycle but no word on e-motorcycle debut

UK motorcycle manufacturer Triumph released an e-bicycle today, the Trekker GT — with 90 miles of riding range, a 250 watt motor and a 504 watt hour battery. With a five hour charge time, the bike weighs 52 pounds (24 kilograms) and can produce up to 60 Nm (or 29 ft-lbs) of torque. Triumph’s Trekker GT will be available for $3,750 at Triumph dealerships in the U.S. and abroad. The question is how this connects to the ultimate debut of a Triumph e-motorcycle. The manufacturer, which is a major gl...

Long Island University Filling Out Inaugural Roster

The NCAA is still in a Covid-19-induced recruiting dead period, meaning coaches are unable to conduct in-home or on-campus visits, nor do any scouting—not that there are any major events to scout as it is. But they are still permitted to talk to potential recruits, and since Long Island University named Brett Riley the school’s first head coach two weeks ago, he has been hitting the virtual meetings hard trying to put together a roster for this upcoming season. So far, the Sharks have garne...

Is a New FZ750 Coming?

Bringing Back the 1980s Motorcycle A new rumor is circulating that Yamaha is working on a new FZ750 motorcycle that could be based on the current MT-09. The rumor comes out of the Japanese publication Young Machine. While it’s just a rumor right now, it would make sense. Suzuki’s Katana has been well received, so why shouldn’t Yamaha bring back an older bike, too?  According to Drive Mag Riders, much of the motorcycle would be pulled straight from the MT-09. This could include the engine, frame...

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 7 June, 2020

A crisp Honda V30 Magna tracker, a swooping Norton/Vincent hybrid, a Ducati Hailwood replica up for auction, and a very sharp Ducati ST4S cafe racer. We’d happily put any of these into our garage. Norvin by Stile Italiano We’ve all seen plenty of lust-worthy Tritons; Triumph motors stuffed into Norton frames. The crew at Stile Italiano has built six, plus four ‘Hartons.’ But now they’ve really gone overboard, with this stunning Norvin. You’re looking at a Norton featherbed frame, equipped ...

Taste of Tsukuba: A classic Suzuki GS1200SS race bike

If you like to play Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport, you’ll know the Tsukuba circuit. It’s hugely popular with the street tuner guys, who use it for ‘time attack’ sprints—and it’s also home to some of Japan’s biggest motorcycle races, second only to the Suzuka 8 Hours. In May and November every year, the circuit hosts the famous ‘Taste of Tsukuba’ races. These are open to classic race bikes, and the array of the machinery lined up on the grid is mouthwatering. And when racing restarts in Jap...

Danger Zone: Federal Moto’s Kawasaki GPz1100

The year is 1986, and Tom Cruise is playing Maverick in Top Gun—flying an F-14 Tomcat by day and tearing around on a Kawasaki GPZ900R by night. If you fell in love with that film and the bike ridden by its motorcycle-mad star, you’re not alone. “We all know that movie,” says Michael Muller of Federal Moto. “And we always knew that when Federal Moto built its first custom sportbike, we’d need the beefiest bad boy of the 80s: the GPz1100.” The GPz1100 was the older, bigger brother of the Ni...

Canadiens’ Future at Center Looks Bright

The Montreal Canadiens have had a problem getting a top center since Saku Koivu left the team in 2009. In the last few seasons, through drafts and trades, they have filled their cupboard with young centers. Saku Koivu (Image: French Kheldar) Now they are in a position where they are deep down the middle, with a few of those players showing signs of being that top center that has eluded the team for over a decade. A Decades-Long Problem The last center the Canadiens had that ...

Essence of a Motorcycle: Heiwa’s Suzuki ST250 scrambler

Kengo Kimura is one of the world’s most versatile bike builders. He can create high-end customs that win ‘Best In Show’ prizes at Mooneyes. He can also build wild concepts for the likes of BMW. And then he can take a humble commuter bike and make it look like a million dollars. This elegant little scrambler is based on Suzuki’s ST250, an anonymous but competent single launched in the mid 90s and sold around the world under several different names—including TU250 and Volty. In the US, the ...

Our Favorite 2020 Model Year Sportbikes Under $15,000

There have been a lot of really great sportbikes released in this last year, but a lot of them are high dollar. When I say that, I mean more than $15,000. Even many of the new middleweight sportbikes come with a pretty high price tag.  I’m not saying that means they’re overpriced. These machines are fantastic and most of them are worth every penny of the price tag, but if you want something new for 2020 and you want a sportbike, your options decrease. With that said, there are still plenty of...

Gixxer Fix: A GSX-R1100 with Ducati superbike suspension

Arno Overweel builds pretty wild custom motorcycles. He’s not afraid of bolting a turbo onto a Honda CBX1000, for example. But he usually reserves those neck-turners for his customers: his own daily runner is a bone stock and somewhat anonymous Suzuki TL1000. A few years ago, the Dutchman built an eye-catching custom for himself, but made the mistake of taking it to a show—and someone made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. So he figured it was time for another personal project. Arno had a s...
