Checking out the Flea Market and some T-Dubing.

Clear skies today, but a high of only 61°F (16°C) and gusty winds.  It was definitely a long pants and fleece jacket kind of day.Sunrise: Drove into Las Cruces to check out the Flea Market, searching for a replacement handle for the scissor jack that came with the Sammy.  Found out it was very helpful for me to know Spanish when asking a vendor of tools and stuff like that for this item.  In spite of being understood, no one had one on hand, they'd all left theirs at home, darn it. The rest...

I meet a Samurai Guru...

Quite the eventful day today.I'd driven down to the City of Elephant Butte to retrieve a package sent to me by my loving wife Martha.  It had the TPMS sensors for the Sammy so I know all is OK when towing her with the URRV. At the front entrance to the T or C Municipal Airport Package retrieved, I went to the Autozone in Truth or Consequences and what did I spy in the parking lot but another Suzuki Samurai!  I parked next to it and its owner came out to chat.  Mike W. works at Autozone and is...

Exploring old and new locations north of Truth or Consequences

Pretty nice day today, presaged by a pretty nice sunrise: About mid-morning, I headed out driving Mariko, the '87 Suzuki Samurai to go check out locations I'd been to before on motorcycles and also range further into the southern boundary of the Cibola National Forest.First was a drive to Mitchell Point and the Stone House located there.  Mitchell Point is located near the Rio Grande which feeds into the Elephant Butte Reservoir to the south.   The interior of the stone house is empty but ...

Still at home, some snow pics....

Mariko, the '87 Suzuki Samurai 4x4 is still in the shop, this time awaiting the replacement of the factory mechanical fuel pump with an electrical pump to hopefully remedy the ongoing fuel delivery issues.More on the delays in the next posting I hope.It snowed a little bit on the Colorado Front Range, the mountains to the west as usual got a lot more.We got perhaps an inch of the powdery version of the white stuff so I thought I'd kill some time this morning with a ride on Scarlett, my 2014 Ura...

Recovery gear for Mariko and more Maintenance

Since Mariko, my '87 Suzuki Samurai 4x4 weighs almost 2100 lbs takes a lot more in terms of equipment to do jobs like raising her to change a tire, or straps and shackles to pull her out of loose sand and just gear to do tire repairs!Note: Still, she basically weighs a bit over One Ton!  Light for a four wheeled vehicle!  One Smittybilt 2780 Air compressor rated for 2.54 CFM to air up the tires after leaving terrain where I decided to air down the tires for better traction.  I like th...

Fiona's Replacement

No, its not another Ural Sidecar Rig.  Close though in terms of speed, older in terms of years but more comfy in terms of weather.Meet Mariko , a 1987 Suzuki Samurai mini-SUV. Saw her on Craigslist about a week ago, and went to look at her on New Year's Eve, ending up buying her and driving her home. From the Craiglist ad:  I also bought from the Samurai's seller most of the required items to tow it behind the URRV in the near future....just have to figure out the wiring from the URRV's four...

2019 Jeep Renegade Downsizes Displacement, Upgrades Power

Jeep’s smallest model has a new uplevel engine for 2019, one that brings to mind the revered and diminutive Suzuki Samurai of the late 1980s. That model also housed a 1.3-liter engine, though the Suzuki’s mill boasted, in a manner of speaking, just 63 horsepower. The Jeep Renegade’s new 1.3-liter four-cylinder isn’t likely to remind […] The post 2019 Jeep Renegade Downsizes Displacement, Upgrades Power appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

Junkyard Treasure: 1993 Geo Tracker, Illinois Rust Edition

When The General created the Geo brand in 1989, the idea was that cars designed and/or built by Toyota, Isuzu, and Suzuki could be sold in the United States under the GM flag (Geos became Chevrolets after 1997). Of all the cars that bore Geo badging, the Tracker stayed in production the longest, when a […] The post Junkyard Treasure: 1993 Geo Tracker, Illinois Rust Edition appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

Expect big things: a retrospective from the Suzuki Jimny’s 40th anniversary

True, we’re about eight years late for celebrating the Suzuki Jimny’s 40th anniversary (which also means we’re two years early for its 50th), but with a widely heralded new Suzuki Jimny in the wings, it’s still worth reviewing this video from 2010 that ran down the three (at the time) generations of the compact four-wheel-drive vehicle better known in the States as the Samurai.

A sports car in SUV clothing: The Jaguar E-Pace reviewed (ars technica)

BradleyWarren Photography The compact SUV has been around for a couple of decades, if you consider the Suzuki Samurai to be the first of its ilk. As SUVs have grown in popularity, especially in North America, almost all manufacturers have gotten in on the action, with models to fit all sizes of parking space. Jaguar was slow to arrive on the SUV scene, only launching the F-Pace for the 2017 model year. The car maker seems to be content to let its corporate sibling...

Jimny Crickets: Suzuki Finally Readies Fourth Generation of Its Little Off-Roader

Suzuki’s automotive division may have retreated from the American landscape, but it left a lasting impression. While not overabundant in goodness, it did have a few bright spots and the Jimny was one of them. Of course, not everyone will recognize the name. But they’ll know the vehicle, even if they don’t realize it. While […] The post Jimny Crickets: Suzuki Finally Readies Fourth Generation of Its Little Off-Roader appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

Roadkill Goes Full Junkyard

There aren’t many shenanigans or bad (good) ideas that Roadkill hasn’t done, but a bucket-list item for Frieburger has been to do an entire build at a junkyard. Sure, the show has put in many-an-hour in junkyards all over, but never have they done a complete build. With Roadkill Garage and Engine Masters co-host Steve Dulcich in tow, the two pick an unusual candidate to be the new home of a 440ci big-block Chrysler engine, something never imagined by the original builders. Of all the chassis bak...

Mini BOV project...Suzuki LJ20 (3/4-scale "Jeep")

I have rebuilt a few unique Jeeps in the past, pretty much from the ground-up. I stepped away from big projects for a while, but after helping some other people with smaller-scale projects, got the itch to get a small project again. I was actually searching for a Suzuki Samurai rolling chassis/project when I ran across this little LJ20. I put a deposit on it, and am picking it up in a few weeks. It's just under 1400 lbs., and originally had a 2-stroke 2-cylinder engine (engine & trans are lo...

Radwood 2018, collectible cars of the future

Trio includes a Jaguar XK8 convertible, Mazda RX7, and Porsche 911, typical of Radwood cars of the 1980s and ’90s. Such vehicles aren’t considered particularly collectible today, but there’s no doubt that they will be in the future. Matt Brown photo. I walk up this fairly steep hill, and there, about 120 feet above Sonoma Raceway (nee Sears Point) is this big parking lot full of cars. But not just any cars. They’re cars of the 1980s and ’90s, and they’re all entered in a show called Radwood. An...

Apocalypse With a Plug: Suzuki e-Survivor Unveiled in Tokyo

While in the midst of developing the next Jimny, a model you might remember better as the Samurai, Suzuki also made an effort to set up a secondary compact off-roader at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. Less grounded than the fourth-generation Jimny, the e-Survivor concept looks like a mashup between Jeep’s Wrangler and the lunar rover NASA took to the moon. Spied! Redesigned Suzuki Jimny Looks Like a Mini G-Wagen

After about 20 years on the market almost unchanged, the ol’ Suzuki Jimny is finally getting a redesign. Because it’s only sold overseas, many in North America are unfamiliar with the Jimny nameplate. The previous-generation Jimny did make it to our shores in the late ’80s and early ’90s in the form of the Suzuki Samurai, but since then this tiny, body-on-frame SUV has been forbidden fruit to the U.S. market. The current Jimny is an affordable but tough and rugged 4X4 with a bare-bones interior ...

Happy Earth Day: 6 Cars to Take You Around the World

The automotive world is currently in a state of flux. The business giants of Europe, Asia, and (perhaps most of all) Detroit may have made their billions off the internal combustion engine, but now, in order to stay relevant in a changing social and geologic climate, they are tasked with finding clean alternatives to petrol-powered products. Henry Ford may have put the world on wheels, but now automotive magnates are becoming responsible for helping keep the world healthy. Today is Earth Da...

10 Things You Need to Know About the 2016 Toyota RAV4

Toyota might not have built the original compact SUV - that honor goes to the Suzuki Samurai - but it certainly kick-started consumer interest in the segment when it introduced the RAV4 in the mid-'90s. The redesigned 2016 Toyota RAV4 continues the tradition started by the very first model, offering shoppers a family vehicle that's comfortable, capable, and reliable, all without breaking the bank.
