America’s First Drag Queen Was Also America’s First LGBTQ Activist and a Former Slave

Negro Dive Raided. Thirteen Black Men Dressed as Women Surprised at Supper and Arrested. —The Washington Post, April 13, 1888 Sometimes, when we are engaged as either participant in, or eyewitness to, the making of history, its easy to forget the history-makers who came earlier, who dug the trenches that allow our modern battles to be waged out in the open. Take America’s first self-appointed “queen of drag” and pioneering LGBTQ activist, William Dorsey Swann, born into slavery around 1858. 30 ...

John Murray and Tameka Swann said they were picked up from their home just before 8 p.m. Monday for a night out on the town. Shortly after pulling away, they said someone rear-ended the vehicle. “Our Uber attempted to pull over so that they exchange information, but the car didn’t stop behind us. V-Wars: Season 1 – review

Director: Various First Aired: 2019 Contains spoilers This is a hard one to review. Overall I enjoyed watching it, and did so as a fan of the novels, but the movement away from some of the premises built in the book proved a weakness for the series overall – I get that often the filmed media has to take liberties with the source material but it was a difficulty on several grounds. The first difference was slight, that the infection reactivating junk DNA was a prion rather than a virus. Once inf...

USC closing on Cincinnati’s Mike Bohn as new AD, report says

USC is nearing a deal with Mike Bohn to be its new athletic director, according to a report from The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman. Bohn has filled the role of athletic director at Cincinnati for five years. USC parted ways with athletic director Lynn Swann in September. Swann, a former USC receiver, had filled the role for three years before resigning his position and allowing Dave Roberts to fill in as the interim athletic director. Bohn is a proven fundraiser. He oversaw an $86 million renovation ...

Arizona Task Force Calls for Wide-Ranging Practice Reforms, Including Eliminating Ban on Nonlawyer Ownership

With the goal of narrowing a growing justice gap in the state, an Arizona task force has called for fundamental changes in the regulation of legal services, including eliminating the ban on nonlawyer ownership of legal practices, loosening restrictions on lawyer advertising, and expanding the ability of nonlawyers to directly deliver legal advice and assistance. But a dissenting member of the task force took issue with key recommendations, arguing that the solution to the access-to-justice probl...

"In search of lost time"

“In search of lost time” is the title of seven volumes and several thousand pages written by Marcel Proust (1871-1922), by many considered to be among the greatest works of fictions ever written. The opinions may of course differ, but I’m rather proud to say that I have managed to read a large part of them – in French!   Last weekend I met a number of Proust fans and I have now promised to re-read Proust, maybe with “new eyes”. Well, I didn’t lose my time last weekend. I went wi...

Dan Hubbs out as USC baseball coach after seven seasons

USC will not renew the contract of head baseball coach Dan Hubbs when it expires at the end of the June, athletic director Lynn Swann announced in a press release on Wednesday. Hubbs spent the past seven years as the Trojans’ head coach, leading the team to a 188-200-1 overall record from the time he started in 2013. USC made it to the postseason once in that span. That came in 2015, when the Trojans finished third in the Pac-12 standings, a best for the Hubbs era. “We want to thank Dan for his ...

This edition, from April 3, has been made available in archived form … LAnguishing: More bad optics for Trojans, Bruins The Hotline is often asked for theories on what ails the Pac-12 — why so much has gone wrong over the past 18 months and what can be done to change the trajectory. Best things to do in Tampa, Florida

Going to Florida for vacation has been an American tradition since the invention of air conditioning. But for business? Outside of Latin American finance and quote-unquote “exotic” imports, folks usually didn’t come down this way to do anything that resembled “serious.” But that’s changed in the past couple of decades, and as business in Florida booms so does the number of people who come here for work. Since the sunshine state was a vacation destination to begin with, it’s also the perfect p...

New USC president Carol Folt dealt with previous academic-athletic scandal

LOS ANGELES — In a news release Wednesday announcing Carol Folt as its new president, USC highlighted her previous experience as the chancellor at North Carolina when she inherited one of the worst academic fraud cases in college sports history. Folt oversaw the fallout from the scandal when her tenure began in 2013. For nearly two decades until 2011, thousands of students, including many North Carolina football and men’s basketball players, took fraudulent “paper courses” in the African and Afr...

USC football mailbag: Will there be a real spring quarterback competition?

USC’s long winter is about over. Spring practice starts next week. The events of the past three months have been consuming around Heritage Hall, starting with athletic director Lynn Swann’s decision to retain Clay Helton after a 5-7 season, the dismissal of about a third of the coaching staff, the hiring followed by quick exit of Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator, the departure of top recruit Bru McCoy and the arrival of Graham Harrell to replace Kingsbury. I think that covers the bulk of...

Alexander: Remembering the L.A. Rams’ unlikely first Super Bowl

The last Los Angeles Rams team to play in a Super Bowl was about as unlikely an entrant as one could imagine, buffeted by turbulence on and off the field but staying upright almost to the end. By the evening of January 20, 1980, the players involved were convinced that not only could they have toppled the dynasty of the time, but that they’d be back on the big stage soon. That only reinforces the idea that it’s folly to assume. RELATED: Vince Ferragamo, last L.A. Rams QB in a Super Bowl, analyze...

Kliff Kingsbury addresses quick departure from USC (briefly)

In an introductory news conference on Wednesday as the new Arizona Cardinals head coach, Kliff Kingsbury briefly remarked on his abbreviated stint as the offensive coordinator at USC. Kingsbury, who joined the Trojans’ coaching staff in early December, departed after only 34 days to join the Cardinals, among several NFL teams that were pursuing him for various coaching jobs. His hiring was announced by Arizona on Tuesday and he was later removed from USC’s staff directory, marking the end of his...

Alexander: Hey, anybody want the USC offensive coordinator’s job?

The Kliff Kingsbury Era at USC lasted 34 days. Who knows? Maybe JT Daniels learned some substantive things during that brief rendezvous. Aside from that unlikely possibility, I see little good to come out of this latest Trojan soap opera. Kingsbury was hired Dec. 5 with great fanfare to bring USC’s offense fully into the spread era and to turn Daniels into … what? The next Patrick Mahomes? Baker Mayfield? Case Keenum? Johnny (shudder) Manziel? We will never know. Kingsbury, the noted Quarterback...

All eyes on USC assistant Kliff Kingsbury as he interviews for NFL jobs

USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was scheduled to interview with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, a day after meeting with the New York Jets, according to several published reports. Kingsbury is being targeted for their head-coaching positions, among the eight vacancies in the NFL. Neither club has confirmed its interview with the sought-after offensive play-caller. The reported dialogue between the teams and Kingsbury came after ESPN reported over the weekend that USC athletic directo...

Kliff Kingsbury may walk away from USC

With Swann, the Athletic Director at USC, blocking Kingsbury from interviewing for head-coaching vacancies with the Jets and Cardinals, Kingsbury may simply resign his position as Trojans offensive coordinator and move on. Per multiple sources, Kingsbury's contract has a very low buyout. But the buyout never came up because the NFL teams, honoring the strong mandate issued at last month's ownership meeting, contacted Swann and requested permission to interview Kingsbury.
