Low On Alice Coltrane, Harsh Winters, And Other Inspirations For Their Haunting New Album

Under The Influence is a new revival of a very old Stereogum franchise, in which we ask artists to talk about the inspirations behind their albums. From other music, to film, to novels, to stray notes left behind by friends, and who knows what else, this is what’s on people’s minds when they’re writing the songs we eventually come to know and love.

Back to Basics Using the Grid Method for Better Painting

Back when I was a young art student, the tedious grid method was drilled into my head – ugh. To me, the Grid Method was a labor intensive process which I happily abandoned nearly 40 years ago! But, I recently painted again with renowned landscape artist, Michael Workman. Much to my surprise, Michael was still praising the benefits of using the old Grid Method for improved drawing and observational skills. So I decided, “When in Rome.”  I have learned patience over the years, and this time the ...

GOMH With Story

It only got to 34℉ today. Open water expanded, especially in width. As I was standing on the bridge there were a couple of swans over by Eagle Perch Point and another pair out further in the SPRO. From the west along comes an otter beelining toward the farther out swans. As he got closer and swans turned toward the otter I thought they were gonna have a throw down. When the otter got about 15' away. The swans turned tail and flew about 35-yards closer to Eagle Perch Point. The otter just...

Cold

It has been very cold in Paris but I bundled up to meet a friend for a walk around Lake Daumesnil where we used to often take walks. Can you tell that the water is frozen? I’m not sure how thick the ice was. Many of the birds stood or rested on the ice. The reflection is of a fake moutain on the grounds of the Paris Zoo. A « Greek » temple. A sculpture near the Buddhist temple there representing pilgrims searching for Zen. Swans near the ice. The ice will melt...

Skunked With A Full Moon

Bulldog Tonight Bulldog 20% Rock 20% 4:00-5:30PM GOMH SW, Rock, Bulldog64-68℉, Partly Cloudy, 4-8mph WNWI started at the GOMH.  There was a guy fishing with his kid on the NE side who got there on a side by side.  Before I arrived at the GOMH I went and checked the Platte Lake Access because it looked like there might be open water up that way, but there wasn't.  I guess the open water line was along Channel Inn North Point to about midway to the Southside of the...

Skunk with Swans a Swimming

7:15-8:05PM GOMH NE SW47-43℉, Partly Cloudy, 6mph NEI went for a walk with Steve around 4:45PM.  We talked about the Vikes and mused over Trubisky.  I went home had dinner. Dropped some paperwork off to Steve.  Checked out Bulldog, not much progress there then hit the GOMH.  I decided to give the NE side a shot.  Swans were swimming around. Didn't get a bite.  Tried the SW side, nothing there either.  With all the rain in the forecast, I'm thinking that ice out day is now in the long term f...

Skunked at the GOMH Tonight, But Otters, Eagles, and Muskrats

44℉ Partly Cloudy, CalmSaw a couple of eagles, otters, and the first muskrats of the year,  The first one spooked me.  Didn't get any bites. Depending on how much rain we get and if there is any current which is currently non-existent if we get temps in the '50s on Sunday and Monday I could see me getting a bullhead early next week. 30 Essential Noise Rock Tracks

Grind. Skronk. Pigfuck. Seemingly every word associated with noise rock sounds incredibly unflattering out of context, and even in context doesn't fare much better. Before noise rock had a name, rock critics such as Lester Bangs and Robert Christgau came up with their own suitably unpleasant ways of describing the tortured sounds of music oozing … More »

My Tackle Warehouse Opener & GOMH Open

Today was the Offical Tackle Warehouse Opener, even though I did go in there briefly yesterday morning.  Both GOMH Bays are now open.  Loons were calling, swans were trumpeting, frogs were making a racket, saw a great blue heron and a white heron.  A bald eagle was at the dead deer and a deer ran in front of me on 8 on my way to the GOMH.  Didn't get a bite again tonight and I'm now down to two of Pete's minnows left. Area Lakes, Loons, Swans, and Lost Scissors at the GOMH

I checked out Bulldog, Rock, and the GOMH tonight.  Loons and Swans were at the GOMH tonight for Steve, Kim, and Devin to see.  I found my scissors which I apparently dropped last Fall.  It was a little on the cool side when I first arrived at the GOMH do to a light wind.  There was a guy fishing the NW side with his little daughter.  He said he didn't see any suckers in any of the rivers he checked.  I didn't catch anything.  Once the wind died it was actually pretty pleasant. Bulldog ...

Dinosaur art mostly bullshit

Within a Millennial's lifetime, depictions of dinosaurs have gone from leathery lizards to feathered floofbeasts as our understanding of ancient biology grew. But it's still speculation, reports Atlas Obscura's Eric Grundhauser, and shaky at that. Check out The Bad Hair, Incorrect Feathering, and Missing Skin Flaps of Dinosaur Art. Pictured above is what a swan would look like if a dino artist drew one based upon its skeletal remains, as brilliantly rendered by C. M. Kosemen. I am pretty sure t...
