Laika is Expanding to Live-Action for the First Time With Thriller ‘Seventeen’

Laika burst onto the scene with 2009’s Coraline, a critically acclaimed dark fantasy film that heralded the start of an innovative new stop-motion animated studio. Over the past 12 years, Laika has released four more feature films, all of them critical darlings but only a few of them box office hits. Stop-motion animation is a difficult, tedious business that requires animators to put in hours of work for a few seconds of footage. To see that Laika’s hard work go unrewarded (their most recent f...

Small Space Gardens

Many gardeners who desire to grow a productive vegetable garden are challenged by their limited growing area and a small space in which to cultivate their vegetable plants. Sylvia recently raised the following question about plans to start a vegetable garden in Cleveland, Ohio: “I have only one place in my yard with sufficient sunlight to grow a nice vegetable and flower garden.” “Any suggestions on how I should approach the layout an...

Why I wanted to get the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine

I’ve waited patiently for my COVID-19 vaccine. I felt like I was at the deli counter of life hoping my number comes up next. And while I know the luck of the draw determines which shot you get, I wanted the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. No offense to Moderna or Pfizer, but I have some family history with the giant pharmaceutical company and wanted to see it come full circle. My paternal grandparents, Ramon and Ernestina Berrios, owned a dairy farm in Gurabo, Puerto Rico, a town about 23 miles from ...

"'Love is strange,' wrote Thomas Pynchon, citing the 1956 Mickey and Sylvia hit single, in his 1988 New York Times review of Gabriel García Márquez’s novel 'Love in the Time of Cholera.'"

"As we get older, he continued, 'we may begin to regard love songs, romance novels, soap operas and any live teenage pronouncements at all on the subject of love with an increasingly impatient, not to mention intolerant, ear.' This sort of marginalization of love stories — that, for one thing, they don’t qualify as 'legitimate' novels — threads through the 125 years of The New York Times Book Review. And yet there are lessons to be learned about the necessary ingredients for a good love story f...

Comment on jelly doughnuts by Sylvia

I didn’t make these with success. They looked lots better than they tasted. To me the donut itself had little flavor (I used high quality vanilla extract). They were best when tossed in cinnamon sugar rather than filled with my expensive Stonewall Kitchen sour cherry jam. Another experiment in the kitchen but not one I will repeat.

Casual Glam in Gold Sequins

A new outfit from Sylvia of Simply Sylvia, whom we introduced to YLF in April 2017. The gold sequin pants are undoubtedly the star of the show and dress up this casual sneaker look that is the epitome of Sporty Luxe. Sylvia has tucked an oversized black turtleneck into wide-legged trousers, which lengthens the leg line from the hips up. The sequins add tons of glitzy old-Hollywood glam, and their dressy party vibe creates a delightful juxtaposition with the rest of the casual outfit. For a toppe...

This Week In Trailers: Fireball, White Noise, City Hall, Farewell Amor, The Reagans

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, we’re dealing with white supremacy, things from space crashing into the earth, a legendary documentarian debuts his latest, look at...

Anis Bouabsa Sesame Seed Baguettes

Anis Bouabsa Sesame Seed Baguettes Submitted by Benito on October 15, 2020 - 9:54am. Having only made Bouabsa baguettes once very early on when I first started to bake baguettes I thought it was time to try them again.  Because I’ve been enjoying seeded crusts on baguettes lately I thought I should use sesame seeds to enhance the flavour and bite. Google doodle honors Orange County’s Felicitas Mendez

Google’s logo doodle on Tuesday honors an Orange County woman who helped lead the fight to end segregation in California schools. In the drawing that appeared on Google’s homepage Sept. 15, a smiling Felicitas Mendez is shown watching a crowd of happy children of all races walk into a school. Her three children, led by her husband Gonzalo, are among them. That image would have been pure fantasy in the early 1940s, when her children were barred from entering a “white” school in Westminster becaus...

Baguettes au Levain set no. 15

Baguettes au Levain set no. 15 Submitted by Benito on August 28, 2020 - 1:28am. This is set number 15 of my baguette trials and tribulations and in some ways one of the most successful baguette bakes I’ve had where I figured something out that has turned out to be critical to my baguettes.  I have been stumped by the lack of ears and grigne on my baguettes, but happy with the crumb.  Well in this bake I reduced bulk fermentation aiming for only a 25% rise in bulk and then eliminated...

Comment on mathilde’s tomato tart by Sylvia

YES PLEASE FENNEL SALAD tell me all your fennel deliciousness… My neighbor has a rogue volunteer fennel plant in his xeriscaped front garden that has turned into a shrub/tree of lovely fennel flowers. It’s right next to a hummingbird feeder, and the hummingbirds take turns lurking in it and chasing each other away from the feeder.

Vamp or Not? Death Ship

B movie horror fare from 1980 and directed by Alvin Rakoff, this was, I guess, partly a naziploitation film and certainly was a strange beast of a premise with a ship that seemed to be alive. My friend Leila suggested this might be a Vamp movie in the same way that I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle and Upír z Feratu are also vampire movies – in that we have a vampiric machine at the heart of the film. Having settled down to watch this I became, as the film progressed, less convinced until close to ...
