The end of Plaid-Visa, and Palantir’s growing startup mafia

Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture-capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. This week we — Natasha and Danny and Alex and Grace — had a lot to get through, as the news volume in early 2021 has been rapid and serious. Sadly this means that some early-stage rounds missed the cut, though we did make sure to have some Series A material in the show. So, what did the assembled crew get to? Here’s your cheat sheet: The demise of the Plaid-Visa...

Pace launches out of private beta with a plan to scale virtual group therapy

One in five people have a mental health illness. Pace, a new startup founded by Pinterest and Affirm executives, wants to pay attention to the other four in that statistic. “Nobody is perfectly mentally healthy all the time,” said Jack Chou, Pace co-founder. “It’s a non-existent idea, everyone is sort of swimming in between being clinically mentally unhealthy and perfectly mentally happy.” While diagnosable mental health conditions might get an individual medication or therapy, those that live i...

Mental health startups are raising spirits and venture capital

A spate of startups focused on mental health recently made enough noise as a group that they caught the eye of the Equity podcast crew. Sadly, the segment we’d planned to discuss this topic was swept away by a blizzard of IPO filings that piled up like fresh snow. But in preparation, I reached out to CB Insights for new data on the mental health startup space that they were kind enough to supply. So this morning we’re going to dig into it. Regular readers of The Exchange will recall that we last...

Coa wants to bring an emotional workout into your fitness regimen

When’s the last time you worked out your soul? A mid-spin pep talk at SoulCycle might make you shed a tear, but not in the way that the co-founders of Coa, Alexa Meyer and Dr. Emily Anhalt, want. The founders, instead, want people to ask themselves: When was the last time you worked out (just) your soul? If you stutter in response, that’s the impetus for Coa, a gym for mental health and online emotional fitness classes. The company just raised a $3 million seed round led by Crosslink Ventures, w...

At Talkspace, Startup Culture Collides With Mental Health Concerns

The therapy-by-text company Talkspace -- which has raised more than $100 million from investors -- made burner phones available for fake reviews and doesn't adequately respect client privacy, former employees say. From a report: The app launched in 2014 to positive press but lukewarm customer reviews, with ratings of about three stars out of five on both the Google and Apple app stores, according to a Times analysis. In addition to starting the $420 million-backed fintech company together, D’Souza and Romanow are in a relationship. How Depression is Changing Internet Culture

In 2016, the comedic YouTube creator iDubbbz uploaded a video of himself jumping off the back of a car into a wheelchair saying, “I have crippling depression.” He says these words self-deprecatingly and almost mockingly. It’s as if to tell his viewers that it’s OK to laugh at the “play” on words. Yes, depression can be so crippling that it can feel as extreme as a physical disability. Since then, the internet community has been flooded with conversation and viral contents satirizing not only the...

Talkspace, one of the latest attempts to try and provide online therapy (a modality available to people since 1996), is under fire yet again. Suddenly, VC Guy Notices Mental Health Care

The quality and resources available to mental health care and treatment in the United States has been on the downswing since the 1980s. It started with the closing of government-run state psychiatric hospitals (putting our most at-need patients at risk, and often, on the streets), without the government offering a comprehensive network of community-based care to take their place. Then managed care — companies driven by profit and greed — came along and mid-level managers with no mental health b...

Technology and today’s vast and immensely underserved mental health population

Someone in your life is suffering from a mental disorder right now. You may not know it, but it’s there. Indeed, one in five adults suffers from a mental disorder. Society has trained us to believe mental illness is something to be ashamed of, so a majority of the afflicted hide it and go untreated. I’d like to say we’re becoming more accepting as a society, but … Read More

We're on the cusp of an explosive change in how we treat one of America's most ignored health problems

You've probably been there: Something stressful is happening in your life, and you're feeling more anxious than usual. You'd love to talk to someone about it, but you don't know who to turn to. Therapy is one option, but A) it can be crazy expensive, and B) you don't want to be that person who has to see a shrink. Turns out, there is no that person . Roughly one in every five Americans, or about 43 million people, suffers from mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health...
