TSN’s First Trade Bait Board Lands: Key Takeaways

Every year, TSN puts out a Trade Bait Board that is followed religiously. Each week that board is updated with the names most likely to move, those who have already been shipped off to a new home and players who climb up and drop down the ladder with regularity. NHL’ers and fans alike keep an eye on the board all year and if you’re on it, you know, with decent certainty, there’s something to your name being out there. On Friday, TSN dropped it’s first Trade Bait Board of the season and t...

Manatee orgy causes traffic jam in Florida

A dozen mating manatees stopped traffic on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa, Florida. Apparently some drivers reported a whale in distress but it turned out to be the manatees in a "mating ball" or "mating herd." And it happened before, a few years ago, in the same spot! Must be something in the water... From the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission: Manatees mate in herds consisting of a focal female and multiple males, from a few to over a dozen, attempting to mate with her. Mati...

Possible Free-Agent Targets: Ryan Dzingel, Micheal Ferland Best Fit: Micheal Ferland would be a nice complimentary player for some of Detroit’s rising young offensive stars, providing some sand up front while still capable of 20 to 25 goals. To Buy Out Or Not

from Luke Fox of Sportsnet, The NHL’s buyout period begins one month from today, the later of June 15 or 48 hours after the Stanley Cup is awarded. It concludes on June 30 at 5 p.m. ET.... Corey Perry, two years at a $8.625 million cap hit Among the top 15 most expensive players in today’s NHL, none have delivered less bang for the buck than Perry the past few seasons. The winger turns 34 this week and has watched his production drop in each of his past three seasons. Granted,...

Sabres Have Options if Skinner Walks

The acquisition of Jeff Skinner proved to be a real coup for both the Buffalo Sabres and Skinner. For Skinner, he tied a career high in points with 63 and set a new career mark for goals by reaching 40. For the Sabres, they found a legitimate winger for star centre Jack Eichel and their first 40-goal scorer since Thomas Vanek in 2008-09. The match is unquestionably a great fit. That’s why Skinner’s lack of a contract is so concerning to Sabres fans. As July 1 nears, it becomes more and more l...

Making Do and Finding Memories

Recently Josie has been pretending to ride her walking stick (and also a black cane she calls The Hammer.)  So I decided to make a little stick horse/hobby horse for her.   I drew a pattern, unearthed some pretty material a friend gave me about twenty years ago, realized that the edging on a pillow case that had just developed a hole would make a nice mane, and looked around for a stick.  John found one that seemed a little too heavy and then he produced this little stick. I...

Millennials living with mom: Inland Empire is No. 1 in U.S., Los Angeles-Orange County, No.3

Southern California is a hotbed of millennials still living at home with mom. In honor of upcoming Mother’s Day, real estate tracker Zillow studied where millennials — defined as folks aged 23 to 37 — were most likely to be living with mom — with mom alone, or mom and dad — among 50 major U.S. regions. Those results were compared to typical rent burdens in each metro area. A growing number of young adults nationwide are staying at home as they grapple with a host of financial challenges such as ...

Conservationists in Florida are making the ultimate effort to protect manatees from tourism

Captain Ross Files sees ripples on the surface of the water down a side canal and instructs Captain Steve Browning to turn in that direction. Files sprints up a ladder to sit on top of the boat, his bare feet and legs dangling, as he looks for more telltale signs in the water. After a minute, he admits defeat. “No, I don’t think that’s a ‘tee!” he calls back to Browning. The early sun rays illuminate the Crystal River in Florida as eight other tourists wearing wetsuits and snorkels share a boat...

Gilded Age mansions in Florida

Florida generally gives about as much regard to its history as its people do to common sense. That said, though the state has bulldozed much of its past for condos, some of the grandest structures ever built in America still remain there. Even before the advent of air conditioning, Florida was a popular winter retreat for wealthy northerners, particularly during the period between the Civil War and the Great Depression, much of which is known as the “Gilded Age.” During this time, grand pala...

Case-Shiller: Annual Appreciation Losing Momentum

Annual appreciation in February kept slowing, with gains grinding to 4 percent, according to the latest national S&P CoreLogic/Case-Shiller Indices. One month prior, appreciation was north of 4 percent, and in February of last year, 6.3 percent. After hitting a peak in the recovery, appreciation has been losing momentum in recent years, and both new and preowned sales have struggled, says David M. Sparkman Wharf cargotecture restaurants revitalize Tampa's Water Street neighborhood

Any successful restaurant requires communication among workers, but when you’re turning out quality food in a 30 by 8 foot space, even more cries of “below,” “behind” and “heard” are necessary to keep staff from trampling each other. “There’s not enough room to open the oven door and the beer cooler at the same time,” says Tampa restaurateur Ty Rodriguez, co-owner of Gallito. Rodriguez’ newest restaurant opened last November and occupies a former shipping container in Sparkman Wharf, a major pr...

Woman rings chemotherapy bell after fighting breast cancer while pregnant

Jessica Purcell completed 12 rounds of chemotherapy while pregnant with her second child. It was no surprise then that Purcell, of St. Petersburg, Florida, used all of her strength, and shed some tears, as she rang the bell last week at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa to mark her final chemotherapy treatment. Purcell, a U.S. Army reservist who works as a civilian for the U.S. Air Force in Tampa, first noticed a lymph node in her armpit in 2017, when she was pregnant with her oldest child, a dau...

Oilers GM Not Even Hired Yet But Already Working

The search for the Edmonton Oilers new general manager feels like it’s been a long process, even though it really hasn’t been. While fans have known a new face will run the show in 2019-20 and there’s been a concern Bob Nicholson finds the right person since the day Peter Chiarelli was given his walking papers (even longer than that, actually) the Oilers have really only started talking to serious candidates over the past few weeks.
