Angels 2020 spring training preview: Did they get enough pitching over the winter?

TEMPE, Ariz. — Pitchers and catchers are set to report for spring training on Tuesday, although they won’t quite be the pitchers that many Angels fans had hoped to see. A winter that many fans will view as a disappointment has come to an end, with the Angels opening camp without having added the premium pitching they had hoped to acquire. Gerrit Cole, an Orange County native and arguably the best pitcher in the majors, spurned an eight-year offer from the Angels to accept $324 million over nine ...

Angels nearing deal with pitcher Julio Teheran

The Angels are nearing a deal with former Atlanta Braves right-hander Julio Teheran, but it has not been finalized yet, a source confirmed Thursday. Teheran would make $9 million on a one-year deal, a source confirmed. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Iran tells EU to speed up efforts to save nuclear deal

EU members Britain, France and Germany plus China and Russia - to avoid the agreement's collapse are struggling as Washington has said any firms dealing with Teheran will be barred from doing business in the United States. "Iran relies mainly on its own capabilities to overcome America's new sanctions," he told a news conference broadcast on state TV. European states have been scrambling to ensure Iran gets enough economic benefits to persuade it to stay in the deal, which Trump said was "deep...

The US Considered Declaring Russia A State Sponsor Of Terror, Then Dropped It

The attempt to kill a former Russian spy in England bore an ominous signature: The assailants used a lethal nerve agent of a type developed in the Soviet Union, and British investigators quickly concluded that only the Kremlin could have carried out such a sophisticated hit. Soon after the March attack, Rex Tillerson, then the U.S. secretary of state, ordered State Department officials to outline the case for designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism under U.S. law. Experts in the dep...

In Middle East, realpolitik is back in vogue

Realpolitik is back in the Middle East. The term, used to describe often hard-nosed practical politics that steers clear of idealistic or ideological imperatives, has been a fixture of international relations debates for decades on end. For supporters, it’s a disciplined, rational approach to the harsh and fluctuating realities of global politics. Opponents cast it as a barely-there justification for unprincipled Machiavellianism. In the current conflict between schools of geopolitical thought, ...

The United States should support Saudi attempts at reform

Clumsy, forced, and uneasy though it may be, the new wave of reform in Saudi Arabia matters a great deal to the Mideast and the United States. And if it doesn’t work, both will be far worse off. That’s why it deserves American support, warts and all. To understand why, some quick recent history is in order. Saudi Arabia hasn’t been one of America’s best allies. With reason, some critics have been apt to rank it, along with the likes of Pakistan, as among America’s worst. In that spirit, the Obam...

Literary The Road to Oxiana by Robert Byron

'In 1933 the delightfully eccentric Robert Byron set out on a journey through the Middle East via Beirut, Jerusalem, Baghdad and Teheran to Oxiana -the country of the Oxus, the ancient name for the river Amu Darya which forms part of the border between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union. His arrival at his destination, the legendary tower of Qabus, although a wonder in itself, it not nearly so amazing as the thoroughly captivating, at times zany, record of his adventures. In addition to its entert...

Is War With Iran Now Inevitable?

By Pat Buchanan USA and Iran Patrick J .Buchanan USA – -(Ammoland.com)- With his declaration Friday that the Iran nuclear deal is not in the national interest, President Donald Trump may have put us on the road to war with Iran.Indeed, it is easier to see the collisions that are coming than to see how we get off this road before the shooting starts. After “de-certifying” the nuclear agreement, signed by all five permanent members of the Security Council, Trump gave Congress 60 days to reim...

Run the Axis of Evil Challenge!

For those of you perhaps too young to remember (or too old to remember anything), in 2002 President Bush referred to Iran, Iraq and North Korea as the “axis of evil.” With Saddam’s regime gone, I guess we’re down to two, and by strange coincidence both of them held a marathon within 48 hours of each other. The marathon in Teheran made the news because the government would not allow female runners on the same route as the men. The women were also required to wear hijab and photographers were not ...

Where Failure Ends with a Bullet: The Genesis of "A Single Spy"

Do you ever wonder how an author develops an idea into a full-blooded novel? In this exclusive essay, William Christie describes how an idea and a character latched onto him and wouldn't let him go. The Genesis of A Single Spy By William Christie Where did A Single Spy come from?  Quite simply, I'm a thriller writer and a history addict.  But this was the first time I've combined the two into a single book. The genesis took place in 1999, when Yale University Press published Professor John Eric...
