Angels open facilities for limited workouts, ‘prefer’ to hold second spring training in Anaheim

The Angels have opened Angel Stadium and their minor league facility in Tempe, Ariz., for limited workouts for players on the 40-man roster, general manager Billy Eppler said on Monday. Eppler also said the team would “prefer” to hold its formal workouts in Anaheim, instead of Arizona, if and when teams are cleared to begin officially preparing for a shortened season. Under the current proposal, each club could chose the site of its workouts in an abbreviated second “spring” training. At the mom...

Angels open facilities for limited workouts

The Angels have opened Angel Stadium and their minor league facility in Tempe, Ariz., for limited workouts for players on the 40-man roster, general manager Billy Eppler said on Monday. The workouts can be on the field or indoor facilities, but they are limited to four players per site at any time. At least six other teams — the Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays — have opened baseball facilities in the past week. Angels GM Billy Eppler said team still clear of coronavirus as players work out on their own

As the previously scheduled Opening Day of the major league season approaches on Thursday, Angels players are scattered around the country, doing little baseball activity because the start of the season is nowhere in sight. “We are really limited as to what we can do,” General manager Billy Eppler said via conference call on Tuesday. “The health and safety of everybody in the Angel organization is paramount and that’s where your mind goes first. Then how do we keep them in shape as best as we ca...

Frustrated Dodgers, Angels fans make the most of spring-training trips – no thanks to coronavirus

GLENDALE and TEMPE, Ariz. – In one symbolic release of anger and disappointment, Dodgers fan Chris Donat actually turned to the one thing that had bothered him so much these past few months. Frustrated upon hearing spring-training games would be canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, just hours before he was set to make a 10-hour drive to the desert, Donat’s reaction came quickly … almost instinctively. “I took a baseball bat to a trash can just like the cheatin’ (expletive) Astros,” Donat s...

Angels players ponder where to go after coronavirus shutdown

TEMPE, Ariz. — As teams across baseball grappled with the question of how to handle the sport’s indefinite hiatus, the Angels have given their players some time to think about it. General Manager Billy Eppler said Friday that he and his staff began calling all players individually and offering them three options for where to be while the sport shuts down to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Per instructions from Major League Baseball and the Players’ Association, players have the option of ...

Angels still working out details in wake of coronavirus shutdown

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Angels had a day off on Thursday, with uncertainty about what the days ahead will look like. On the day that Major League Baseball announced an abrupt end to the spring training schedule and at least a two-week delay for the start of the regular season, Angels officials were working to devise a plan of how to proceed in the meantime. No club officials or players were made available to the media as of early Thursday evening. At least a few of the team’s decision-makers – Genera...

Reports: MLB to suspend operations because of coronavirus

TEMPE, Ariz. — Major League Baseball will announce today that it is suspending operations – canceling all spring training games and delaying the start of the regular season – because of the COVID-19 virus, according to multiple reports. The seemingly inevitable decision is expected to be announced following a conference call among major league owners and commissioner Rob Manfred on Thursday morning. The regular season had been scheduled to begin March 26, but now the start of the season is undet...

Angels bullpen candidate Jacob Barnes looks to bounce back from injury-marred season

TEMPE, Ariz. — Jacob Barnes is again feeling and pitching like the guy who had established himself as a dependable big-league reliever. Barnes, a non-roster invitee to Angels camp, has not allowed a run in five innings, with his velocity back in the mid-90s. “Looking at the velocity, the break on his breaking ball, and just his attitude,” Manager Joe Maddon said. “He’s got a nice attitude on the mound … I’m really liking what I’m seeing a lot.” The Angels are likely set with Hansel Robles, Ty Bu...

Is Angels vs. Astros season-opening series in peril after Houston rodeo is canceled?

TEMPE, Ariz. — Questions about the Angels’ season-opening series in Houston grew louder with the cancellation of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Houston Astros, who are scheduled to host the Angels on March 26 in the first game of a season-opening four-game series, released a statement saying there have been no changes to their schedule so far. “We are in regular communication with the city, county, local health authorities and MLB,” the statement said. “We have not adjusted our game s...

Angels ponder the possibilities of further impact from coronavirus

TEMPE, Ariz. — As he stood on the other side of a railing from the members of the media on Tuesday morning, Joe Maddon motioned toward the dozens of fans at the other side of the Tempe Diablo Stadium who gathered to watch batting practice. “That would be a huge crowd in instructional league,” Maddon said. “That would be a sellout.” Maddon was reminiscing about his days running the Angels instructional league as he addressed the topic of what it would be like to play major league games without fa...

Checking the spring training progress of Angels top prospect Jo Adell

TEMPE, Ariz. >> About halfway through the exhibition schedule, top prospect Jo Adell has showed both his promise and the need to clean up a few parts of his game. Adell, 20, is hitting .318 (7 for 22) in big league exhibitions with the Angels. “He’s been on time with his swing,” Manager Joe Maddon said Monday. “He’s catching up to heavy velocity right now. He uses the (opposite field) gap well. You know, there’s a couple little technique things in the outfield, which I’ve already we’ve talked to...

Joe Maddon has Angels working on bunting for hits

TEMPE, Ariz. >> For much of the spring, there have been a few players out in the right field corner at Tempe Diablo Stadium, dropping one bunt after another down the line. It is all part of what Manager Joe Maddon calls his commitment to “a liberal arts version of baseball.” The new Angels manager is trying to move the game away from an emphasis on homers, and one aspect of that is making sure that most of his players can bunt. He’s not so much interested in sacrifices — it’s generally accepted ...

Andrew Heaney to start Opening Day for the Angels vs. Houston Astros

TEMPE, Ariz. — Andrew Heaney’s first victory is simply making through four weeks of spring training without the elbow pain that has dogged him each of the past two years at this point. The reward was being named the Angels starter for Opening Day, a first for Heaney’s career at any level of professional baseball. “It’s an honor,” Heaney said after getting the news from Manager Joe Maddon on Sunday morning. “It’s cool. I’ve worked really hard to put myself in that position and it’s pretty cool.” ...

Kole Calhoun reflects on Angels career, being back in Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. — When Kole Calhoun played the final game of the 2019 season in an Angels uniform, he suspected that it would be his last time. The subsequent winter didn’t change that, up until the moment he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. “Never really a moment I though I’d be back,” Calhoun said Saturday, just before playing a spring training game against his former team. “There was some talk, but nothing very serious, which was fine. Angels’ Griffin Canning optimistic after receiving injection in sore elbow

TEMPE, Ariz. — Griffin Canning returned to Angels camp Saturday morning with an elbow full of healing fluid and an optimistic attitude. Canning, who said he received a platelet rich plasma injection Friday in an effort to help his bothersome elbow, said he’s heartened that tests have not shown any structural damage. “There’s no joint (issues), no ligament issues,” Canning said. “It’s just kind of some stuff rubbing against each other in there. So hopefully I’ll just get this injection and get so...

Angels’ Griffin Canning set for injections in elbow

TEMPE, Ariz. — Angels pitcher Griffin Canning was set to undergo “biological injections” in his balky right elbow on Friday in Los Angeles, followed by a further evaluation in three to four weeks, the team announced. Canning has been sidelined for just over a week with discomfort in his elbow, but so far tests have not revealed sufficient damage to warrant surgery. An initial MRI showed “chronic changes” to his ulnar collateral ligament, which amounts to normal wear. The Angels did not specify t...

Angels address the sticky situation of illegal substances on the baseball

TEMPE, Ariz. — The story of one of baseball’s worst-kept secrets arrived at Angels camp this week. A day after news that Angel Stadium visiting clubhouse manager Brian Harkins had been fired for supplying visiting pitchers with a sticky substance to apply to the baseballs, players in the clubhouse responded with little surprise about what had occurred. “It’s not a huge secret,” Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney said. “I think no one thinks it’s shocking that people are using sticky stuff on their...

Source: Angels fire employee for supplying ball-doctoring substances

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Angels have fired visiting clubhouse manager Brian Harkins after he supplied illegal substances to visiting pitchers at Angel Stadium, according to a source. An Angels spokesperson would only confirm that Harkins was no longer employed by the Angels. Major League Baseball has been investigating claims of pitchers around the majors applying illegal substances to the ball. The Angels learned that Harkins was aiding the pitchers in obtaining the substances, and they fired him, th...

THE GAME: Dylan Bundy and Jaime Barria combined for 7-1/3 innings in the Angels’ 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday in Tempe, Ariz. The Angels made the most of three hits to get the victory. PITCHING REPORT: Bundy worked 3-1/3 scoreless innings on 50 pitches, striking out four and walking none. The right-hander said he was scheduled for three innings, but because he’d thrown only 42 pitches, he got to start the fourth. “I felt good,” Bundy said. “I was able to get in all the pitc...

Angels closer Hansel Robles more comfortable in reunion with Mickey Callaway

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Hansel Robles that Mickey Callaway has seen with the Angels is a different pitcher than the one he saw as manager of the New York Mets. And Callaway, now the Angels’ pitching coach, is not about to mess with him. “We want him to do what he did last year,” Callaway said. “If we can improve on that, we will, but we want him to be comfortable and pitch like he needs to.” Robles enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2019, posting a 2.48 ERA and recording 23 saves. Griffin Canning might be unavailable for start of Angels’ season

TEMPE, Ariz. – Griffin Canning’s season is expected to be delayed, at least at the outset, as the Angels are still trying to determine the exact root of the issue that is causing discomfort in his ailing right elbow. That throwing session was supposed to be a part of a second round of testing following his MRI on Friday. “We don’t have any ...

Angels’ Griffin Canning surprisingly throws to test his elbow

TEMPE, Ariz. — One day after the diagnosis of “chronic changes” in his ulnar collateral ligament, the Angels offered a surprise Saturday morning by saying starting pitcher Griffin Canning would throw on the side at the team’s spring-training facility. Canning pitched in Wednesday’s game against Dodgers, coming out of the outing with a stiff elbow, similar to what he felt last season when he was shut down with six weeks to go before the end of the year. Angels, Griffin Canning wait for elbow injury update

TEMPE, Ariz. — The first round of testing gave the Angels some hope Griffin Canning can avoid surgery on his balky elbow, although they will have to wait until an exam Saturday to get more definitive news. The Angels announced Friday that the pitcher’s MRI exam a day earlier had showed “chronic changes” in his ulnar collateral ligament, along with “acute joint irritation.” While there’s no evidence so far of a tear in the ligament that would require surgery, Canning and the Angels aren’t yet in ...
