What brands did you use to love but have since replaced? With what brand(s)?

More info on how to answer: I wanted to think about brands we used to love but moved on from because, ultimately, we found another brand that fills that same space but fulfills our needs better now. When does the hunt for a holy grail product end?

Sort of… never but there is definitely a nice pause if I find something that I feel is the best I’ve ever tried and hits all the high points I’ve been wanting. If a brand puts something out that really seems like it could be better, I’m definitely game to try it. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What was your last (or most) embarrassing makeup mishap?

I forgot to wear mascara in an entire series of photos (for the blog)! There were so many, LOL! — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What product would you love to see reformulated?

Urban Decay Eyeshadow — whatever they’re pushing towards in more recent palettes is less consistent than their previous formulas, but it feels less and less modern to me when comparing it to other brands pushing out better eye products. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What makes you feel comfortable purchasing a product sight unseen?

If a brand has consistent enough quality, then I’d definitely feel good about purchasing something I hadn’t seen in person. Obviously, I do that a lot, but I’m not purchasing with the NEED that it actually perform well! — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What’s your current lip care routine?

I use Sara Happ The Dream Slip at night (sometimes the Lip Slip if I haven’t done a ton of lip swatches for a couple of days), and then I just use a towel after a shower to rub my lips for exfoliation. I don’t find I need much more! — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What’s on your nails right now?

Bare nails! Even though I love the effect of polish, I am really lazy about using it. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Have you ever regretted getting rid of a product?

At this point, nothing sticks out in my mind as a regret–I want to say mostly no but especially now. I go through it like water by the nature of what I do, so I don’t get that attached. I only find I get attached now if it’s something that has a lot more meaning – like I’d definitely... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Has your application method for concealer changed over time? How?

I am more apt to use two different concealers–not just shades but formulas–for under eye concealing vs. covering up dark spots, acne, etc. I also use fingertips a lot more for diffusing and patting in concealer than I used to. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Has your application method for foundation changed over time? How?

I used to always spritz my brush with Fix+ or water, and I rarely do that now. I’ve gone between brushes and sponges, but I always return to brushes. I prefer a denser, flatter brush over a stippling one nowadays. — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Has your application method for blush or highlighter changed over time? How?

I’m a lot better at applying less and building up gradually. I actually think I tend to go heavier now than I used to since I’m more used to applying for photos and testing (it’s easier to judge how much something has faded if you actually start with more visible about) vs. real life... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Has your application method for eyeshadow changed over time? How?

I definitely spend more time blending out products, and I’m more careful to use separate brushes (or clean them in-between) to avoid muddying gradients or mixing up textures. I am better about using more mattes in the crease (look, shimmers have my heart) than I did many years ago! — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

Has your method for product research changed over time? How?

What was the first tool that changed your routine?

MAC 239! Magical eyeshadow application brush–it really could do it all. Not quite as good now that it’s fully synthetic and I’ve since replaced it with other tools I enjoy more (even before it went all synthetic). — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What was your first makeup product? How do you feel about it now?

It was either Benefit Show Offs (loose, shimmery eyeshadows) or a few MAC eyeshadows (I think Bronze, Antiqued, maybe Goldmine?). I actually still love all those MAC eyeshadows, but it’s been a minute since I’ve thought about Show Offs. I think I’d like them still but wouldn’t use them due... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

What was the last eyeshadow look you put together and loved?

I loved this shimmery, more muted rainbow eye I did with Clionadh eyeshadows a couple of weeks ago — it wasn’t even intentional to do a rainbow gradient of color! — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

If you had to, which blush would you let go of first?

Obviously, I have a bajillion, so I could pick a dozen and close my eyes and probably not really miss them, LOL! I enjoy and wear a lot of shades, generally, so I think for me I would look for formulas that are hard to blend and probably limit to just a few deeper red/fuchsia kind of shades (because... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

If you had to, what lipstick would you let go of first?

Though I don’t keep most of them (especially from non-core brands, e.g. MAC or NARS), any and all liquid lipsticks that dry down and are drying can pretty much take a hike! In an alternate universe, I’d keep maybe two or three for that ultra-rare occasion where I’d sacrifice comfort for... — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]

How do your expectations change as price goes up?

I have less room to forgive–on a personal level, not with respect to reviews–weaknesses in a product. The higher the cost, the less a brand can justify missing; it has to do what it says it’s supposed to and do it well with less and less room for error! — Christine Join Discussion [Author: Christine]
