Tesla's 110% stock rally could signal an electric revolution, and this miner expects to cash in

Tesla stock has rocketed about 110% in 2020, hitting a record high of $917 on Wednesday. Hochschild Mining said the electric-car maker's rally bodes well for its rare-earth deposit in Chile. Electric-car batteries rely on rare-earth minerals, so Hochschild stands to benefit if Teslas and other electric cars become mainstream. "This project is so unique and so important to the future and to the electric revolution," finance chief Ramon Barua said. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stor...

Changing a 35 MPH traffic sign to 85 MPH with a piece of tape causes Tesla to drive 85 MPH

Researchers at McAfee adding a small piece of tape to the "3" on a 35 MPH traffic sign, to make it look a little like an "8." Then they put two older model Teslas in autonomous mode, and both accelerated to the new speed limit. Don't try this in a school zone, kids. From Business Insider: Tesla's newer models use proprietary cameras, and MobilEye EyeQ3 has released newer versions of its cameras that McAfee tested and said were not fooled by the modified sign. The McAfee researcher Povolny told ...

Hackers stuck a 2-inch strip of tape on a 35mph speed sign and successfully tricked 2 Teslas into accelerating to 85mph

Researchers at McAfee were successfully able to trick two Teslas into autonomously speeding up by 50mph. The researchers stuck a two-inch strip of tape on a 35mph speed sign, and the car's system misread it as 85mph and adjusted its speed accordingly. The safety of Tesla's autopilot features has come under close scrutiny, but CEO Elon Musk has predicted the company will have "feature-complete full self-driving" this year. Tesla's biggest problem with self-driving cars is that it actually has to sell them to customers (TSLA)

Unlike Cruise and Waymo, Tesla has created a business around building cars and selling them to consumers. This business model has been wildly successful for Tesla, now valued as highly as three of General Motors. But Tesla is hamstrung by this model, as far as the potentially $8 trillion autonomous ride-hailing and ride-sharing business is concerned. Tesla is trapped, having created great products that consumers want and love, but also watching as competitors design all-new businesses optimize...

Why Andrew Yang and Elon Musk are wrong about universal basic income

With presidential candidate Andrew Yang suspending his campaign before making it to California’s Super Tuesday primary, other candidates are moving to appeal to his small but devoted “Yang Gang” fanbase by talking about his proposed “freedom dividend,” which promised every adult American $1,000 a month. “I’ll continue to carry this torch of Universal Basic Income that will re-invigorate our middle class and those struggling just to make ends meet, bridge the income gap and unleash an era of entr...

Teslas look better without front plates but they must still have them

Q. My wife was recently stopped by a police officer because she did not have a license plate on the front of her car. Of course, she told the police officer that she was not aware there was no plate there because her husband (me) takes care of the cars. The officer gave her a fix-it ticket, and we got that taken care of. Where I live a lot of people have Teslas, and not one of them has a license plate attached to the front. I even asked one of my neighbors about that, and he said that Tesla does...

Tesla finally returns Autopilot to second-hand Model S owner after secretly wiping it from his car

Tesla’s unsolicited removal of additional vehicle features appears to have been resolved, but it’s highlighted a much bigger issue with buying second-hand Teslas from third-party dealers. Last week, a report from Jalopnik revealed that Tesla surreptitiously removed the Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features from a Model S that was sold second-hand, through a third-party dealer. On one hand, it looks like a quick attempt to make more money by selling upgrades multiple times...

Investors who have been stunned by Tesla's stock-price surge need to keep a key vulnerability in mind (TSLA)

Tesla's stock has enjoyed a stunning rise in the past three months. The company is now comically overvalued, with a market cap that's well over $100 billion. Investors have discounted Tesla's total exposure to the still-tiny electric vehicle market and have also argued that the carmaker deserves a tech-company valuation. Tesla has no plan B if the EV market fails to materialize as expected. Click here for more BI Prime stories. What a ride! Tesla in the span of about three months went from ab...

Tesla reportedly made a significant change to its Supercharger pricing (TSLA)

Tesla has changed the way it bills customers for charging sessions at the electric-car maker's Supercharger stations, Electrek's Fred Lambert reported, citing an internal email sent to Tesla employees. Tesla owners now have to pay for the electricity used to power systems like the HVAC and battery heater when charging, in addition to the electricity used to fill their vehicle's battery, according to Electrek's report. Previously, Supercharger customers only paid to recharge their batteries. Te...

Elon Musk Shows How Teslas Will Talk To Pedestrians

An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNET: In a tweet, the Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company's vehicles will soon be able to talk to pedestrians if you choose, and he showed off a clip of the unnamed feature in action. The Model 3 passing by tells the cameraman, "Well, don't just stand there staring, hop in." Musk didn't dish out more information on the function, but the speakers used are likely the same ones added to meet new regulations for electric cars and plug-in hybrids this year....

Tesla surges past $500 a share; Musk says cars will soon ‘talk’ to pedestrians

Tesla made history on Monday, with a little help from its shareholders, as the electric carmaker’s stock price topped $500 a share for the first time. Company shares closed at $524.86 as investors continued to throw more weight behind the company and its prospects for future growth and success. Oppenheimer analyst Colin Rusch added to the enthusiasm Monday as he raised his price target on Tesla’s stock to $612 a share from $385. Rusch said there are several factors working in Tesla’s favor right...

Y Combinator's Sam Altman made a gutsy bet with critics 5 years ago to prove there was no startup bubble. He would have won, but a disconnect between public and private markets made him pay up.

Former Y Combinator president Sam Altman bet TechStar's Michael de la Maza that all the talk of a startup investing bubble in 2015 was overhyped. The wager consisted of three parts, including his predictions for where certain mature, middling, and young startups would be by 2020. To win, all three predictions would have to be correct. Although Altman's ambitious targets were easily cleared on two predictions that covered private startups, his prediction about public startups was a clear miss. ...

Last Sunday, a Tesla Model S sedan left a freeway in Gardena, California, at a high speed, ran a red light and struck a Honda Civic, killing two people inside, police said.... The long-range Tesla Model 3 can now do 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds — so I decided to compare it with the BMW M3 (TSLA)

Tesla recently offered Model 3 owners a software upgrade to enhance the performance of the long-range version of the car. The upgrade costs $2,000 and drops the 0-60mph speed to 3.9 seconds from 4.4 seconds. That's BMW M3 territory, for a car that isn't even Tesla's top-spec performance model. Comparing the two, I'm impressed by the Model 3's extra straight-line speed, but I'd still take the costlier M3 as a driver's car. GM, Ford, and other car companies have struggled to break into vehicle-sharing and subscriptions. There are 3 reasons why, according to the CEO of the car-sharing app Turo. (GM, F)

Automakers have in recent years begun rolling out ride-hailing, car-sharing, and subscription services to prepare for a move away from individual vehicle ownership, but many of those services have shut down or contracted. Andre Haddad, the CEO of the car-sharing service Turo, told Business Insider there were three primary reasons auto companies have struggled to grow their mobility services. Automakers don't have much experience dealing directly with consumers, lack expertise in nonvehicle tec...
