Everything About The Rock’s First Official Rap Verse Is Funny

I can still remember hearing that Wyclef Jean was going to have the Rock on his single. This was 21 years ago, when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was on his fourth or fifth reign as WWF World Champion. The Rock wasn’t a movie star yet — he’d make his debut as a terrible CGI effect in The Mummy Returns a year later — but he already seemed like he might be the coolest person on earth. The Rock had been a shit-talking, egocentric heel who’d become a crowd favorite simply because he was so good at egoce...

Dwayne Johnson Makes His Official Debut As A Rapper On Tech N9ne’s “Face Off”

The Rock has been at least rap-adjacent for a couple decades now. In 2000, a young Dwayne Johnson served as hypeman on the ska-inflected Wyclef Jean single “It Doesn’t Matter.” In 2016 he arguably spit bars in character as Maui on “You’re Welcome” from the Moana soundtrack, adopting the familiar cadence of songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda on the song’s bridge. And now he has made his official debut as an MC on the new Tech N9ne album.

The Summer Of Cena: What Three Movies Reveal About An Increasingly Interesting Actor

In the summer of 2002, a walking slab of meat clad in metallic red spandex trunks showed up on an episode of WWE Smackdown to answer an open challenge from future WWE Hall of Fame inductee and legitimate Olympic gold medalist, Kurt Angle. Donning an over-oiled buzzcut and armed with an endless amount of unteachable charisma, this muscular young stud debuted in front of the world, and sparked what would become an absolutely untouchable career both in ring and out. John Felix Anthony Cena Jr. had ...

Asian American and Pacific Islander Inclusion Doesn’t Just Mean More of The Rock

Let me start this column off by saying, I love Dwayne Johnson. I mean, who doesn’t love The Rock? We’ve been smelling what he’s been cooking for nearly 25 years. And yet, it was quite deflating to see the recent report “The Prevalence and Portrayal of Asian and Pacific Islanders Across 1,300 Films,” which found […]

The Mummy Returns’ Legacy Is That It Gave Us the Rock’s Acting Career

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since The Mummy Returns released in theaters? The blockbuster epic arrived with plenty of fanfare on May 4, 2001, as a sequel to 1999’s surprisingly terrific The Mummy and promised more high-spirited adventure with Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser), his wife Evy (Rachel Weisz), and … their kid Alex? Cue record scratch sound effect. Don’t worry. The film only went downhill from there. RELATED: Black Adam Filming Begins as Dwayne Johnson Posts First Set Photo! Pro...

Hugh Woodin, Kurt Godel, Dwayne `The Rock' Johnson, Robert De Niro, David Frum, Tom Selleck: Do I care what they think? Should I?

MATH:My last post on CH mentioned that Hugh Woodin used to think NOT(CH) but now thinks CH. In both cases his reasons have some math content to them. Also, note that Hugh Woodin seems to believe that CH somehow HAS an answer. Kurt Godel also thought CH HAS an answer. It has been said that he could have announced  his result that CH is consistent but saying  L is THE model, and the problem is now solved. Should we care what Hugh Woodin and Kurt Godel think about CH?YES- they have both studied th...

‘The Rock’ Honest Trailer: An Unstable Chemical Weapon Meets the Unstable Nicolas Cage

It’s hard to believe, but there was a time that Michael Bay made great action movies. Sure, they’re still several movies crammed into one unnecessarily long story, and they still don’t make a lot of sense, but Bay’s earliest movies have some truly incredibly directed action sequences and characters you love to see causing chaos. If you need any evidence of that, just take a look back at The Rock with Honest Trailers. The cavalcade of character actors alone is enough to make this an all-timer. ...

"Southland Tales" is the perfect hot mess of a movie for the 4th of July in the hellscape of 2020

Southland Tales has long occupied a special place in my heart. The only thing I knew about it was that it was written and directed by Richard Kelly, the guy who made Donnie Darko, and starred my cousin's former high school baseball teammate, the Rock, in a dramatic role. So I ordered it on Netflix DVD in the summer of 2007, and popped it in while I did some laundry, only half paying attention. Reader, Southland Tales is not a movie to half-pay attention to. Hell, even your full attention won'...
