Management hires hitmen to murder workers before they can unionize

From Radio Luxembourg (via Google Translate): Muriel M., at the head for nearly 30 years of a plastics processing company located near Oyonnax, has indeed sponsored a contract on the head of a " troublesome" employee , a member of the CGT. — Read the rest

Creative industry workers suffer the most stolen wages, according to UNESCO

A recent white paper from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization shines a necessary but depressing light on working conditions within the arts industry throughout the world. There's the positives… It shows that the industry sectors making up the creative economy generate annual revenues of US$2.250 billion, global exports of over US$250 billion, often generate up to 10% of national GDP, provide nearly 30 million jobs worldwide and employ more people aged 15-29 t...

American sex workers can now legally unionize

Brandi Campbell is a sex worker, specifically a stripper. Since 2016, she's also run a blog for Stripper Labor Rights, that includes resources for other sex workers who want to protect themselves from exploitative labor issues. In 2018, Campbell had been working at the Centerfold Club in Columbus, Ohio. Although she was technically an independent contractor, the management still got pissed when they discovered her side gig, and subsequently fired her for allegedly violating "no touching" laws. T...

It's International Worker's Day, so here's a look at a day in the life of a labor organizer

Nastaran Mohit is the organizing director of the NewsGuild of New York, which represents more than 24,000 journalists and media workers in the US and Canada. I've met her through her work with the Wirecutter Union, and she's also helped to organize workers at The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Buzzfeed, and more. Teen Vogue recently published a great piece on Mohit, breaking down a day in her life — which is, as one might imagine, made even more complicated by the coronavirus pandemic. But Na...

The Popdose Mixtape: Labor Day 2018 Edition

Welcome again to our annual cavalcade of music and songs from the ass-end of the class divide, the anthems and laments of the world’s working men and women, those who toil in obscurity while the boss-man hogs the glory. In years past, I’ve typically used this space to treat you to an essay on the state of the US economy and the plutocratic banditry so rampant therein. This year, though, that seems kind of redundant. If you pay any attention at all to the news, you can’t help but be aware of the ...

The Popdose Mixtape: Labor Day 2017 Edition

Welcome once again to our annual revue of hard-hitting songs for the hard-hit people on the wrong side of the class divide — the laborers, the men and women who fuel the engine of American productivity for the purpose of funneling money upward to those who own the means of production. If that sounds like Communist rhetoric to you — well, you’ve probably been hearing more of that since last we met. In the wake of a crucial electoral defeat for a Democratic party that’s spent the last four decades...
