Polestar raises $500M from outside investors as EV market grows

Polestar, Volvo Car Group’s standalone electric performance brand, has raised $550 million in its first external round led by Chongqing Chengxing Equity Investment Fund Partnership, Zibo Financial Holding and Zibo Hightech Industrial Investment. SK Inc., the South Korean global conglomerate, and a range of other investors also participated. While this is Polestar’s first external round, the company’s comments suggest it won’t be its last. Polestar said Thursday that the growing market for electr...

Polestar “will have to question everything” in order to build the first climate-neutral EV

Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle brand spun out of Volvo Car Group, set on Wednesday a “moonshot goal” of creating the first climate neutral car by 2030. But instead of getting there through more widely-practiced offsetting measures, such as planting trees, the company said it’s going to fundamentally change the way the new EV is made. That means rethinking every piece of the supply chain, from materials sourcing through to manufacturing, and even by making the vehicle more energy efficien...

Polestar challenges itself to make an entirely carbon neutral car by 2030

Last year, on World EV day, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath declared that “Electric cars are not clean.” With its latest announcement, it seems the startup EV maker is keen to address that fact. Today, as part of its first annual review, Polestar has declared its ambition to make a car that’s entirely climate neutral by 2030, in what it dubs the Polestar 0 project. While Polestar already makes a battery electric car — the Polestar 2 — that has zero tailpipe emissions, as with other EVs CO2 is crea...

Electric cars aren’t clean — and it’s time the industry is honest about it

Last month, on World EV day, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath issued a statement that began with this line: “Electric cars are not clean.” On the face of it, this seems like a strange thing for the chief executive of an electric car company to say. After all, EVs are always marketed as a “clean” alternative to conventional cars. But the truth is a little more complicated. Electric vehicles do offer a route to climate neutrality, but it takes more than just buying an EV to “go green.” The trouble is...

Polestar recalls its newest EV for the second time this month

Polestar, the electric vehicle brand that was spun out of Volvo Car Group, has issued another recall for its newest electric vehicle. The company is voluntarily recalling nearly 4,600 vehicles over what has been described as a faulty inverters, Reuters reported. Polestar said in a statement that all affected customers will be notified, beginning November 2. “The recall involves the replacement of faulty inverters on most delivered customer vehicles,” Polestar said in its statement, adding th...

Polestar CEO defends the Polestar 2’s recall and 233-mile EPA rating

Polestar is a young automaker spun out of Volvo and Geely. Now, just four years old, it has two cars on the market with more launching soon. Like many startups, the company is weathering early storms coming from government regulators and early recalls. Earlier this week, the EPA released its findings on the Polestar 2’s electric range, certifying it as capable of traveling 233 miles on a charge. That’s about 90 miles less on a charge than the competing Tesla Model 3. Read our early impress...

Polestar built a better car than Tesla; now it needs to build a better brand

Polestar is a startup in an unusual situation. Polestar has the car. It has the executives. Polestar has factories, partners, and distribution channels. It’s set for success in a way most startups are not. And yet, success is not guaranteed. I fear Polestar is missing a critical aspect of electric vehicles and selling against Tesla. I anticipate this will be a crucial point of discussion with Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath at TechCrunch Sessions: Mobility. We’re excited to have Ingenlath join ...

The Polestar 2 bests the Tesla Model 3 in drivability and enjoyment

I enjoy driving the Polestar 2 more than the Tesla Model 3. The Polestar 2 is more comfortable, seemingly better built, and has a better infotainment system. In all the traditional automotive metrics, it’s a better car, and yet I find it hard to recommend over the Tesla Model 3. The Polestar 2 often excels where the Tesla Model 3 falters. The fit and finish of the 2 are on par with anything from BMW, Mercedes, or Volvo as Polestar is a close partner to the Swedish luxury brand. However, while th...

Cake and Polestar Announced a Brand Partnership

The Swedish Electric Vehicle Companies Work Together Cake seems to be rolling right along, and the company has just announced a brand partnership with Polestar, which is the electric car arm of Volvo. While this partnership opens up some interesting options for both brands, the key takeaway from the partnership is that Cake will sell its lightweight electric motorcycles in Polestar’s European showrooms.  The companies started working together in 2019 when both organizations noticed they have a ...

Polestar Precept: Science Fiction or Something More?

Polestar is, essentially, what Volvos will become in the future. At the moment, Polestar is a brand unto themselves, but it is obvious this is where the Swedish auto manufacturer is heading. Volvo’s Polestar begins production of the all-electric Polestar 2 in China

Polestar has started production of its all-electric Polestar 2 vehicle at a plant in China amid the COVID-19 pandemic that has upended the automotive industry and triggered a wave of factory closures throughout the world. The start of Polestar 2 production is a milestone for Volvo Car Group’s standalone electric performance brand  — and not just because it began in the midst of global upheaval caused by COVID-19, a disease that stems from the coronavirus. It’s also the first all-electric car ...

Volvo’s performance brand doesn’t want to be anything like Tesla Designers rarely get to run the show at carmakers. Volvo’s Polestar brand is assembling prototypes of its first plug-in hybrid sports car

Polestar has started assembling verification prototypes of its upcoming plug-in hybrid sports car as Volvo’s standalone electric performance brand prepares to produce customer cars next year. Verification prototypes of the Polestar 1 vehicle, which are built largely by hand, mark the first testing phase for production. Polestar 1 To Debut During Monterey Car Week

Would You Pay $155,000 for a Polestar 1?

The former Volvo subsidiary, Polestar, has revealed the final pricing for its much-publicized Polestar 1 hybrid-electric sports car. That price is 155,000 euros in Europe and $155 000 in the United States, and the question is, would you pay that kind of money to own what is essentially a coupe Volvo? Granted, the car has charisma and it benefits from advanced technologies and all that. But just Google what $150K can buy you, and you will have to doubt Polestar’s logic in pricing the 1. That ...

Called the Polestar 1, the coupe was said to make 600 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, while offering a 93-mile range in electric mode. The big question, though, was how much it would cost. Now we finally have that answer. At Auto China 2018 in Beijing today, Volvo released official pricing for the Polestar 1. In the U.S., it will start at $155,000.
