Study finds half of Americans get news on social media, but percentage has dropped

A new report from Pew Research finds that around a third of U.S. adults continue to get their news regularly from Facebook, though the exact percentage has slipped from 36% in 2020 to 31% in 2021. This drop reflects an overall slight decline in the number of Americans who say they get their news from any social media platform — a percentage that also fell by 5 percentage points year-over-year, going from 53% in 2020 to a little under 48%, Pew’s study found. By definition, “regularly” here means ...

Lil Nas X Conquered Pop On His Own Terms

Lil Nas X was going to be a one-hit wonder. This much seemed obvious to me. “Old Town Road” had all the makings of a fleeting career. A half-rap, half-country novelty hit about a lean-drinking cowboy who’ll ride ’til he drops, made viral through savvy promotion on TikTok and Twitter, buoyed by controversy over whether it should qualify for Billboard‘s country charts, then sent into overdrive by a remix featuring the “Achy Breaky Heart” guy — it was more a meme than a song, a joyous joke adults a...

A TikTok-er's hideously humorous redesigns are being used by major brands

"I graduated college with a degree in design and I redesigned some popular logos I think we can all agree are ugly," says Emily Zugay on her TikTok account. She proceeds to redesign iconic logos into Microsoft-Paint-style abominations. Zugay is clearly doing this as a joke, and her three videos have gotten nearly 12 million views— each. — Read the rest

Digested week: start with a Monday from hell and go from there

The pandemic continues to be a ball-ache but we were given a tiny and surprising point of lightMondayToday was the kind of Monday we all dream of having. My 10-year-old son fell, hurt various bits of himself and smashed his two front teeth on the pavement. We spent the day in A&E, then the dentist. I and the extended family went into uncharacteristic convulsions when presented with the necessity of the latter, because our folk memory is saturated with horror stories of oral tortures past. Contin...

What Beauty Product Have You Purchased Due To Advertisement?

Have you ever purchased a beauty product strictly due to awesome advertisements? Perhaps it was a commercial or a magazine layout that influenced the purchase? I am very much guilty of this particularly when I was younger and believed every single thing that marketing was feeding me about how the product would give me flawless skin, conceal all my imperfections, do my laundry, and walk my dog. The older I get the more skeptical I become about the allure and promise of what a product can do f...

LinkedIn launches a $25M fund for creators, will test Clubhouse-style audio feature in coming weeks

When LinkedIn first launched Stories format, and later expanded its tools for creators earlier this year, one noticeable detail was that the Microsoft-owned network for professionals hadn’t built any kind of obvious monetization into the program — noticeable, given that creators earn a living on other platforms like Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, and those apps had lured creators, their content, and their audiences in part by paying out. “As we continue to listen to feedback from our members as ...
