Comment on whole lemon meringue pie bars by Sarah

In reply to Tilda. If you do, use a metal 9×13 if you have one since you’ll need to chill the pan then return it to the oven to toast the meringue. I ran the finished product under the broiler (be REALLY careful because it will burn in minutes) instead of baking it a la Parks.

Addressing the safety of high folate levels in the older population and implications for fortification in Ireland

A new study from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) at Trinity College challenges claims from some international scientific circles, that having high blood levels of folate (folic acid) increases the risk of poor cognition in older adults, especially in those with low levels of vitamin B12. On the contrary the study found that having higher folate seemed to be associated with better cognitive function in these older adults.

‘The Dead Don’t Die’ Review: Jim Jarmusch’s Zombie Comedy Lacks Bite [Cannes]

The Dead Don’t Die is Jim Jarmusch’s love letter to George Romero. The iconoclastic indie director twists his usual sardonic gaze upon the common tropes of zombie films (the mantra is “kill the head” as a way of vanquishing the foes), and Jarmusch’s goal is to set a desiccating look at the underpinnings of undead mythology. With an all-star cast that includes Jarmusch regulars and newcomers alike, including Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Iggy Pop, RZA, Sara Driver, Chloë Sevigny, S...

The man with the exploding head: the director inspired by his medical condition

When acclaimed Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul discovered he had ‘exploding head syndrome’, he let the condition feed into the film about trauma and memory he was making with Tilda SwintonAPichatpong Weerasethakul’s house in northern Thailand is a luscious jungle paradise full of polished concrete and teak, palm trees and bamboo. Even the air smells zen. The house’s three gatekeepers, Dracula, King Kong and Vampire, do little to disturb the peace. They are pugs – named because Weerasetha...

‘Braid’ Review: An Intoxicating Thriller That Makes “Style-Over-Substance” a Good Thing [Tribeca]

I’ve never robotripped, ingested geltabs of acid or licked stimulant toad excretions, but if I did, I’d imagine the experience to resemble Mitzi Peirone’s Braid. Style over substance just had a new league invented by this hallucinogenic rabbit’s hole, laced with uppers and light on explanations. Keeping up isn’t an option here – audiences are better served soaking in sugar plum scenic drenches than trying to rationalize character motivations. Peirone marches to the beat of her own drum, that’s ...

36 Fashion Designers On The Women Who Inspire Their Work

It's ironic that an industry so catered to women would be run mostly by men, isn't it? Though females make up 70% of the fashion workforce, they hold less than 25% of senior-level positions. But like some of the most influential names in style history — from Jeanne Lanvin to Coco Chanel — the 36 women ahead used this disparity as motivation to fight their way to the top, disrupting the status quo by all starting companies with the mission of creating clothing for and by women.
