When Narendra Modi took notes: How the owners of India’s language newspapers “advised” the PM six hours before he announced a 21-day shutdown. (Or so it seems.)

Narendra Modi‘s relationship with the news media since becoming prime minister in 2014 has been built on conspicuous contempt and confrontation, but behind the scenes, chummy co-option and cultivation has been a constant endeavour. Modi likes the world to believe he is not bothered with what the “news traders” of the mainstream media say, when he can directly “speak” to the people through social and public media: so no media adviser; no journalists on board his aircraft; no press conferences; no...

Recipe - Indian times and new function! PNG Cover

Hi, kovid, hi guys, here is a new recipe. I only create it to show how i insert PNG coverfiles into my RSS feeds. I found out that only jpg/jpeg files are shown as calibre covers. But mostly i got PNG files with alpha channel for this. (as i search on google-pictures for e.g. indian times ;-) So i wrote a python function to convert this for me. May it is possible to add this functionality into the code? If not , this works like charm. Try it. Code: #!/usr/bin/env python2 # vim:fileencodi...

Uber Sells Food Delivery Business in India To Local Rival Zomato

An anonymous reader quotes a report: Uber said on late Tuesday that it has sold its food delivery business, Uber Eats, in India to local rival Zomato as the American ride-hailing giant races to shed lossmaking operations to become profitable by next year. As part of the deal, Uber would own 9.99% of Zomato and its Eats users would become part of the Indian company, the two loss-making firms said. The deal valued Uber Eats' India business between $160 million and $200 million, two people familiar...

Farmers, Technology and Freedom of Choice: A Tale of Two Satyagrahas

This is of The Rationalist, my column for the Times of India. I had a strange dream last night. I dreamt that the government had passed a law that made using laptops illegal. I would have to write this column by hand. I would also have to leave my home in Mumbai to deliver it in person to my editor in Delhi. I woke up trembling and angry – and realised how Indian farmers feel every single day of their lives. My column today is a tale of two satyagrahas. Both involve farmers, technology and t...

Eight reasons why Indian cricket looks like Indian politics today: a loud, mindless cauldron of ‘desh bhakti’, unaccountable, Pakistan-obsessed, and a darling of shady corporates

In the late 1980s, the then Editor of The Times of India, Girilal Jain, wrote that in India, politics sets the pace and everything else follows in its wake. In other words, every sphere of Indian life picks up its cue from politics and its practitioners. In the fifth year since the fresh dawn of civilisation, it can be safely said that the frenzied fans, followers and fanatics of ‘Team India’—the accent being on frenzied, mind you, not on the sane and sober—have a great many similarities with t...

38 factoids and 5 infographs from the jungle of statistics published in newspapers that put Narendra Modi’s stupendous 2019 victory in perspective

Many English newspapers have produced a dizzying array of information and graphics following the election of Narendra Modi, with The Times of India (above) standing out for homework, imagination and display. But it’s easy to get lost in the maze. Here are a few stats which stand out from ToI, Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, Mint, and The Telegraph. *** 1. BJP has been the single latest party in five of the last seven general elections. 2. While BJP got 21 seats more than in 2014, its alli...

JRB Jeejeebhoy: Mumbai has forgotten the ‘leading historian’ who once highlighted its forgotten past

JRB Jeejeebhoy, who wrote numerous pieces on the city and its heritage from the 1920s to the 1950s, has met the fate of his subjects. History unfortunately has been superseded in favour of flighty novels and trashy periodicals, with the result that the investigation and research into the ancient annals of cities and villages have been entirely neglected. It is sincerely to be hoped that this branch of the study will interest the present and the future generations and that they will continue to c...

15 Kannada journalists have been arrested for forgery, blackmail, extortion in last 45 days. The tree is rotting from the top; there is an ethical vacuum. Kannadigas should be concerned about the news they are consuming.

As a Kannadiga who has been an English journalist all his life, it is deeply depressing and distressing to watch the current plight of Kannada journalism, both print and electronic. On the one hand, there is a burgeoning intellectual vacuum in newsrooms. Gone are the brains who shaped the minds of readers and leaders with balance, nuance and substance. In its place is loud, comic-book froth and frivolity in the name of the “market”. And, on the other hand, individual and i...

Lessons from an Ankhon Dekhi Prime Minister

This is of The Rationalist, my column for the Times of India. A friend of mine was very impressed by the interview Narendra Modi granted last week to Akshay Kumar. ‘Such a charming man, such great work ethic,’ he gushed. ‘He is the kind of uncle I would want my kids to have.’ And then, in the same breath, he asked, ‘How can such a good man be such a bad prime minister?” I don’t want to be uncharitable and suggest that Modi’s image is entirely manufactured, so let’s take the interview at face...

India’s Times Internet isn’t ceding ground to US rivals Facebook and Google

The aggressive push by Silicon Valley companies and Chinese firms to win India, one of the last great growth markets, has decimated many local businesses in recent years. With each passing day, Amazon is closing in on Walmart-owned Flipkart’s lead on the e-commerce space. Uber is fighting with Ola for the tentpole position of the ride-hailing market; and Google and Facebook dominate the ads business, to name a few. But a handful of companies in India have not only survived the growing competitio...

EC’s poll code bars ‘Times of India’ from displaying its Narendra Modi “interview”. But the rule does not apply to ‘Vijaya Vani’ and ‘Dighvijaya News’, the Kannada paper and channel owned by former BJP MP Vijay Sankeshwar.

The Times of India has an “interview” with prime minister Narendra Modi on the eve of the second phase of #GeneralElections2019, but it is only available in hard copy, in the print editions of the newspaper. On its website, ToI has blanked out the PM’s interview with the line: “In view of the 48-hour silence period in force for the second phase of the LS elections on April 18, which applies to all forms of electronic media, the prime minister’s interview will be uploaded on this page once votin...

'Will call you when I land,' texted Indian Ethiopia crash victim

An Indian newly-wed who died in the Nairobi-bound Ethiopian Airlines plane crash had texted her husband she would call him on landing, local media reported Tuesday. Shikha Garg, who was travelling to attend the annual assembly of the UN Environment Programme, had got married less than three months ago to Soumya Bhattacharya after dating for three years.
