Nuclear fuel removed from crippled Japan plant

The operator of Japan's crippled Fukushima power plant on Monday began removing atomic fuel from inside a building housing one of the reactors that melted down in 2011. The delicate operation represents the first time the Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) has pulled out fuel from inside a highly contaminated building containing the melted-down reactor, and comes four years behind schedule. Due to high radiation levels, technicians used remote-controlled equipment to haul fuel from a "storage poo...

A Japanese court Wednesday awarded nearly $4 million in fresh damages to scores of residents forced to flee their homes after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown. The Yokohama district court ordered the government and Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) to pay 419.6 million yen ($3.8 million) to 152 local residents, a court spokeswoman told AFP. Fuel removal device installed at meltdown-hit Fukushima reactor

Workers at Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have installed a device to remove nuclear fuel from a meltdown-hit reactor nearly seven years after the crisis was sparked by a tsunami, a spokesman said Monday. The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), said it started putting a crane on the roof of unit No. 3 on Sunday to extract a total of 566 rods from its fuel pool. It will be the first removal of fuel rods from one of the three reactors that melted down when t...

Five years after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that swamped the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan and led to multiple reactor meltdowns, the electric utility that owns the plant is just in the early stages of a decades-long, $9 billion decommissioning effort. Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), with governmental support, is developing new technologies and advancing robotics as it struggles to find the melted fuel so it can plot a strategy to recover the debris...
