Brexit in Berlin: These British Expats Weigh in on the Effects of Britain Leaving the EU

photos: Andrea Lavezzaro.  One thing we can easily agree on: Brexit fucking sucks. The idea to separate from a union like the EU in times of global uncertainty is just… well: a bad one! Especially considering the way it went. Of all the things that have gone wrong in the EU, this is certainly the most tragic one to date. We are still not sure if anything is going to happen. With all the delays it feels like a bit of an irony that Brits can vote for European Parlament this week, not even sure i...

‘Tom and Jerry’ Movie Cast Adds Michael Peña as Neither Tom or Jerry

They’re still making that live-action-animation-hybrid Tom and Jerry movie, and the film’s villain has been found. Michael Peña, aka “the best thing about the Ant-Man movies”, has joined the Tom and Jerry movie cast in the role of hotel manager who has it in for the famous cartoon cat and mouse duo. Traditionally, Tom and Jerry are each other’s greatest foe, but I guess they’ll put their differences aside to battle Michael Peña. Deadline broke the news that Michael Peña has joined the Tom an...

Wuthering Mimesis.

Amateur Reader (Tom) at his blog Wuthering Expectations (see this LH post) is beginning a series of posts about Auerbach’s Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, which I wrote briefly about here; his first post covers the first two chapters, his second chapters 3-7. In the latter he mentions something I had not noticed, the book’s Francocentrism: Here I will stop to note that there are sixteen chapters left, and the linguistic division is: two Italian, two English, one Ger...

‘The Dead Don’t Die’ Review: Jim Jarmusch’s Zombie Comedy Lacks Bite [Cannes]

The Dead Don’t Die is Jim Jarmusch’s love letter to George Romero. The iconoclastic indie director twists his usual sardonic gaze upon the common tropes of zombie films (the mantra is “kill the head” as a way of vanquishing the foes), and Jarmusch’s goal is to set a desiccating look at the underpinnings of undead mythology. With an all-star cast that includes Jarmusch regulars and newcomers alike, including Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Iggy Pop, RZA, Sara Driver, Chloë Sevigny, S...

Researchers Solve Scientific Puzzle That Could Improve Solar Panel Efficiency

New solar panels created from a semiconducting material called cadmium telluride (CdTe) "have been found to produce electricity at lower costs than silicon panels and there has been a dramatic gain in efficiency brought about by adding an element called selenium to the cadmium telluride," reports Phys.Org. "Until now, it was not well understood why selenium increases efficiency but thanks to Tom Fiducia, a Ph.D. Research Student in the Center for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST), and ...

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The KitchenAid stand mixer is an icon of industrial design in its own right. However, in a billboard campaign on Toronto’s largest expressway, the brand is paying tribute to another, more local, design icon; the CN Tower, one of the tallest free-standing structures in the world Entitled “KitchenAid mix’n match”, the billboard uses technology to mimic the ever-changing colours of the CN Tower’s lights. The world is my office: why I chose to become a digital nomad worker

From copywriters to computer programmers, people with online-based jobs are seizing the chance to take their work on their travelsI dismissed the idea at first. Over a picnic in south London’s Brockwell Park last May my friend Tom asked whether I had ever considered leaving the UK behind and continuing my football journalism career abroad.“Nice thought, mate,” I replied. “But I can’t see it happening. How would I make it work? Besides, I’d miss you too much.”

Along with his brother, Tommy, he turned the Greek eatery in San Pedro into a familiar, festive Southern California landmark. Papadakis eased himself out of the restaurant business in recent years and Pappy’s Seafood now occupies the brothers’ old space. Tom Ford Clash, Stunner, Powertrip Lip Sparks Reviews & Swatches

Clash Tom Ford Beauty Clash Lip Spark ($55.00 for 0.1 oz.) is a deep, coppery red with warm, orange undertones and flecks of orange and red sparkle. It had medium to semi-opaque coverage in one layer, which went on fairly evenly but could have applied better. The texture was lightweight, emollient without being heavy or slippery on my lips during wear, and was comfortable to wear. I didn’t notice the texture during application or while worn, though if I pressed my lips together firmly...
