Kitchen of the Week: A Brightly Colored (and Cost Conscious) London Kitchen

Like so many people, Alexandra Evans and her husband, Tom, had always been cautious about color: “We had to think about resale value, so we painted everything white,” she says. Then the couple bought a 1914 fixer upper in Richmond Park, in southwest London, for themselves and their three children, ages 4, 9, and 13. Feeling as if they had found their “forever home,” they decided it was time to welcome in the bright and the bold. Working with a trusted carpenter and crew, they embarked on the re...

html to EPUB - added class into tag

I'm converting a pretty clean .html file into EPUB using Calibre 4.20 and have run into a validation problem. The EPUB 'works' fine on my test reading apps/devices, but it does not validate due to: class="calibre" being inserted into the tag, with the resulting string in each chapter split file: Now, I can go in and edit the 30+ chapter files and remove the offending string, but I'd like to know how it got there in the first place! Tom interestingly, Amazon and Kobo didn't mind the EPUB, ...

Matcha From Morning ‘Til Night

It is possible to consume matcha-flavored, matcha-infused, supplemented-by-matcha products from morning til night.  I know because I tried. RADIUS’s Organic Matcha Mint Gel Toothpaste is no longer listed on the company’s ALL PRODUCTS webpage.  Has it been discontinued?  This gel in brown tastes more coffee than tea, thus not so refreshing.  I am a fan of all dental hygiene products by Tom’s of Maine which has yet to introduce a matcha toothpaste. Let’s see how much lo...

ORVIS FLY FISHING - Tom and Shawn Answer Fly Rod Questions

The other day on the Orvis Fly Fishing Facebook page, Tom Rosenbauer and Shawn Combs took questions live and had a great discussion on fly rods.  There was actually quite a bit of "Glass Geek" talk in the mix as well.Of course I had to ask what each of their favorite Superfine Glass fly rods were.  Tom's answer kinda surprised me and he gets extra credit points for wearing his many years old by now T.F.M. t-shirt for the session. I'm sure that this video will make it over to the Orvis YouTube c...

NHL Rumors: Bruins, Canucks, Flames, More

In today’s NHL rumor rundown, the Boston Bruins are hoping an injury to Brad Marchand isn’t too serious. He left an exhibition game and is questionable for Sunday. Breeders’ Cup Classic rankings are a sign of big things to come

It’s never too early to look ahead in horse racing. It’s the potential dream matchups that are a big part of the sport, showdowns between horses like Affirmed and Alydar, Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, and Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra. The latter battle, of course, never took place because of circumstances far beyond our control, but it’s the star power, the big names, that drive the sport. Kings and queens of the track – the likes of American Pharoah, California Chrome, Beholder, Songbird and o...

Word of the week: Hygiene theater

Yes, I am aware that hygiene theater is two words. Bite me. Am I cranky? Yep. It’s been a long four and a half months. I’m sick of the pandemic, the closures, the conspiracy theories.  (I am not, however, sick-sick.)  I miss libraries. I miss film festivals. I miss the sauna at the Dolphin Club after a cold bay swim. I keep hearing in my head the voice of a woman who was a regular at a gym I used to belong to. (I miss gyms.) She was a naturalized US citizen, originally from Ukraine: a larg...

That Time Civil Rights Hero John Lewis Ended Up Guest-Starring On The Animated Series ‘Arthur’

Just as some of the Boomers and Gen-Xers first encountered opera on Tom and Jerry, and just as some Millennials first found memorized U.S. presidents or learned the nations of the world from Animaniacs, younger generations have Arthur, and that’s why it was important for Rep. John Lewis, civil rights icon, to appear on the animated show. “Arthur decides to organize a cafeteria sit-in to force the school to hire an assistant for Mrs. MacGrady, and Lewis joins in the demonstration.” Of course he ...
