John Stamos’ former Calabasas mansion changes hands for $3 million

A 6-acre Calabasas estate once owned by “Full House” star John Stamos has sold to Republican congressional hopeful Justin Aguilera and his wife, Candace. The couple bought the four-bedroom, Mediterranean-style home in February for $2.95 million, property records show. Records also show it listed in March 2019 for $4.1 million. In a YouTube Channel video tour titled “Quarantine Life in Mansion” posted on March 29, Candace Aguilera shows off the 7,547-square-foot house currently undergoing a glam ...

‘The Voice’ found this Orange County singer after he’d spent years of paying his dues

Nine words and 17 seconds. That’s all Roderick Chambers had to sing of the Brian McKnight song he’d chosen for his blind audition on “The Voice” to convince judge Nick Jonas to hit his button, spin his chair, and change Chambers’ life forever. Now picture what that was like for Chambers: You just got something you’d dreamed about for years, but there’s still more than a minute of the song to sing, and millions of viewers are watching. Rock singer Tom Petty and his wife Dana arrive at the wor...

How to turn your living space into a home office, home school and more during coronavirus

It’s not something we’ve had to think about before: What happens when your family is home all or the most of the day, trying to work, do schoolwork, create, cook, exercise and relax? You might find yourself having to create multiple workspaces – for you, your spouse and your kids to do schoolwork. You also have to find ways to keep the common areas functional and free of clutter. Luckily, those with experience in working from home, as well as interior designers, professional organizers, homes...

Best songs to sing in groups

Now, more than ever, it’s time to sing. We shall sing in our showers. We shall sing from our cars. We shall sing to our pets and to our friends — over Skype. And to our neighbors — from our balconies. You’re likely not too bad at it, right? What with all those late-night karaoke sessions with your inebriated co-workers. Maybe you’re even a professional musician, or a part-time rockstar in your local band. Even if every time you sing, birds scatter and wine glasses shatter, the benefits of si...

An algorithm produced every possible melody. Now its creators want to destroy songwriter copyrights.

A computer coder calculated all of the possible 8-measure, 12-beat melodies possible from Western music's 12 notes. The coder and a lawyer decided to claim ownership of every song melody ever. The two of them submitted all of these songs into the public domain so no one could ever be found in court to be plagiarizing a song. If we learned anything at all from Jurassic Park, it's that just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it. Even so, coder Noah Rubin and lawyer Damien Riehl...

A pair of musicians recorded every possible MIDI melody just to get around copyright law

Motherboard has an interesting new piece about musical copyright law, and the fact that there are only so many musical sequences using half-step frequencies possible. What happens when they're all used up, and the copyright trolls take everyone to court for any song that even remotely resembles another one, just by virtue of the fact that it relies on the same music theory? Think about Lana Del Rey ripping off of Radiohead, who had accidentally ripped off of the Hollies. It's not crazy to w...

Musicians Algorithmically Generate Every Possible Melody, Release Them To Public Domain

Two programmer-musicians wrote every possible MIDI melody in existence to a hard drive, copyrighted the whole thing, and then released it all to the public in an attempt to stop musicians from getting sued. From a report: Programmer, musician, and copyright attorney Damien Riehl, along with fellow musician/programmer Noah Rubin, sought to stop copyright lawsuits that they believe stifle the creative freedom of artists. Often in copyright cases for song melodies, if the artist being sued for infr...

When Keyboard Worlds Collide: Benmont Tench and Steve Nieve in Conversation

It’s only natural that the two greatest band keyboard players in the annals of rock would have formed a mutual admiration society. These would be Steve Nieve, of Elvis Costello & the Attractions and later the Imposters, and Benmont Tench, of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers fame. There are other contenders for the aforementioned accolade, […]

The day after Universal Music Group revealed that it is planning an IPO within three years, an attorney for four artists who have claimed to have lost recordings in a 2008 fire that destroyed thousands of assets in the company’s archives has accused UMG of “gamesmanship” and downplaying and refusing to reveal the extent of […]

Lilly Hiatt Delivers Potent New Track, "P-Town" (premiere + interview)

You also wrote about your sister on "Rae" and about traveling with her while she worked with the homeless on "Some Kind of Drug". She threads through both those songs. I could try to be discreet about that, but I really can't be. She had a job working with a nonprofit here, Open Table Nashville. She was in contact with many homeless people, getting them housing, resources, fighting uphill battles daily. That song emerged after riding around with her to the spots where she helped people and me...

Thinking of Selling Your Home? The Waiting Is The Hardest Part.

Tom Petty famously penned the words, “the waiting is the hardest part” in his early 80’s hit song The Waiting, and his thought process can surprisingly also be applied to individuals considering selling their homes today. Traditional thinking would suggest it may be best to wait until the spring to sell when there is a […]
