(Welcome to The Disney Discourse, a recurring feature where Josh Spiegel discusses the latest in Disney news. He goes deep on everything from the animated classics to the theme parks to live-action franchises.) The concept of what a theme park is, or can be, came firmly into being with the opening of Disneyland on July 17, 1955 in Anaheim, California. But the park that existed on Opening Day was vastly different from what Disneyland and the other Disney theme parks have become over the past si...

This Six Flags Magic Mountain coaster is getting scrapped and fans are cheering

Usually, it’s news of new and upcoming rides that gets theme park fans cheering. But this week, many fans have been celebrating a ride closing, instead. Six Flags Magic Mountain confirmed over the weekend that it will remove its Green Lantern: First Flight roller coaster to replace it with another, as-yet-unannounced attraction. Best European music festivals

Not that you ever need an excuse to head to Europe during the summer other than it being Europe in the summer. But sometimes it’s nice to have an event to base your travels around and something to do other than fight the million other Americans who also thought this would be a good time to cross the pond. European music festivals offer the perfect centerpiece to a summer Eurotrip, a weekend where you can converse with people from all over the world and maybe catch Cardi B somewhere along the ...

Want a Star Wars: Galaxy Edge lightsaber from Disneyland? Be prepared to pay

Young padawans better start saving their allowance and babysitting money now if they want to buy one of the authentic lightsabers sold in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when the new themed land opens this summer at Disneyland. The realistic-looking lightsabers will set them back $158. That’s a lot of lawn mowing money. And Disney won’t take galactic credits. Only credit cards or cold hard cash. The price of the the hilt, or handle, will be around $109 while the cost of the blade will be $49 depending ...

Stay in the Middle of the Magic at the Disneyland Hotel, Anaheim

My head hit the pillow and I snuggled down into a soft cloud. Oh My goodness this bed is comfortable. I felt the exhaustion drain out of my body and my last thoughts before slipping into dreams of magic carpet rides was, “Oh this is exactly what the body needs after a long day at Disneyland.” And then at 5:05 I woke up. No alarms needed. I felt refreshed, alert and in awe of how I had slept like a log (not a baby as they don’t sleep). The girls had succumbed to the comfort that evening as well....

Brad Bird’s Next Project is an Original Live-Action/Animated Hybrid Musical With Michael Giacchino

Brad Bird has successfully made the leap from animated movies to live-action blockbusters and back to animated movies. But there’s one genre, despite often working under the umbrella of Disney, that he hasn’t yet tackled: musicals. The Incredibles 2 director confirmed that his next project will be something that he’s “deathly afraid of” but that he’s been wanting to make for a long time. The next Brad Bird project is a live-action and animated hybrid musical that will be composed by Michael Gia...

George H.W. Bush kicked off the home stretch of his 1988 presidential run on a sweltering Labor Day with a parade down Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A., but behind-the-scenes his press team was desperately trying to keep the then-vice president from being photographed with Mickey Mouse.
