Endangered bluefin tuna sold for $3.1 billion to sushi tycoon

A recent predawn auction at Tokyo’s new fish market brought a record-breaking bid for the endangered bluefin tuna. Sushi tycoon Kiyoshi Kimura, who owns the Sushi Zanmai chain, paid $3.1 million for the enormous fish, more than double the price from five years ago. Kimura’s Kiyomura Corp has won the annual action in the past, but the high price of the tuna this year definitely surprised the sushi king. Nonetheless, Kiyomura says: “the quality of the tuna I bought is the best.” The 612-pound (27...

Where to travel by zodiac sign

Maybe you think astrology is stupid. Maybe you think it’s a bunch of hippie-dippy junk science people use to excuse bad behavior. “Well you should have known I was going to was going to cheat on you, Janet. I’m a Scorpio!” Ok, well put that aside for a second. Because if you buy into astrology — if only for the time it takes to read your horoscope — it can be pretty entertaining. And sometimes, surprisingly accurate. Besides, even if you’re not into astrology, there’s a good chance someone yo...

Japanese Omelette Squares (Tamagoyaki) With Sweet Mustard

SERVES 4 PREP 5 MINUTES COOK 10 MINUTES
A few years ago just outside the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, I discovered tamagoyaki. An omelette made from rolled up layers of sweet egg, it’s a snack, sushi component or part of a bento box. Mesmerised by a street stall with eight pans on the go, I was inspired to try it at home. They served it up with a nostrilflaring hot mustard, but I’ve concocted a more mellow version using a little miso.

At Sushi Sazanami in Sherman Oaks, the chef’s choice is always a smart pick

Sushi Sazanami sits on a mini-restaurant row on Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, between Monster Thai and Rock ’n’ Pies Pizza Co., which is not where you might expect one of the Valley’s best sushi restaurants to be found. Indeed, we’re so used to finding the best sushi along Ventura Boulevard, the presence of great fish, elegantly prepared, served in an understated setting that’s not on Ventura Boulevard comes as a bit of a cultural shock. And yet, it certainly happens. And in this case, it hap...

Splurging on the Right Things in Tokyo

On my first trip to Japan in 2013, I completely fell in love with the country — but I couldn’t have named a favorite city. I deemed Japan far greater than the sum of its parts. That may still be true — but this time, I have a favorite. Tokyo, I love you so much. I’m about to say something a bit taboo in the travel blogging community: you can have fun in Japan on a backpacking budget, but it’s so much better with more financial wiggle room. You don’t have to live lavishly — the only expensive th...
