A 3-foot-long mammoth tusk hidden on the ocean floor could offer clues about the ancient creatures

Members of the science team at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute observe the mammoth tusk.Darrin Schultz © 2021 MBARI Scientists discovered a 3-foot-long mammoth tusk roughly 10,000 feet below the ocean's surface. The deep sea is ideal for preserving remains, though mammoth fossils rarely wind up there. The tusk belongs to a young female mammoth. Scientists are using it for clues about how she lived. Craft your pitch deck around ‘that one thing that can really hook an investor’

Michelle Davey’s pitch to Jordan Nof of Tusk Ventures about Wheel, a startup focused on providing a full suite of virtual care solutions to clinicians, was front-loaded with early metrics. It may not be standard practice to start with the numbers, especially early on, but she explained to us why she chose that strategy — and Nof told us why it worked. Davey and Nof joined us on a recent episode of Extra Crunch Live and went into detail on why Tusk was eager to finance Wheel, walking us through t...

Big Tech faces 'danger scenario' with a Democratic sweep in November, warns prominent venture capitalist Bradley Tusk

Spencer Platt/Getty Images Big Tech faces a "danger scenario" with a Joe Biden win and a "blue sweep" in the upcoming elections, prominent venture capitalist Bradley Tusk warned on CNBC."People assume Congress is so incompetent and so inept and Big Tech companies are so smart they'll figure out how to stop them," Tusk, who is also a political strategist, said."I don't know if that's the correct assumption. Political strategist turned tech investor Bradley Tusk on SPACs as a tool for VCs

Bradley Tusk has become known in recent years for being involved in what’s about to get hot, from his early days advising Uber, to writing one of the first checks to the insurance startup Lemonade, to pushing forward the idea that we should be using the smart devices in our pockets to vote. Indeed, because he’s often at the vanguard, it wasn’t hugely surprising when Tusk, like a growing number of other investors, formed a $300 million SPAC or special acquisition company, one that he and a par...

Sorry, ‘Moose Jaws’ Will No Longer Feature Jay and Silent Bob

Kevin Smith has a pile of unmade projects he’s been talking about for the last several years. One of those is Moose Jaws, a horror-comedy that was supposed to close-out his True North Trilogy, which started with Tusk and continued with Yoga Hosers. Smith hasn’t given up on Moose Jaws just yet, but he is ready to make some changes. At one point, Smith’s ever-present Jay and Silent Bob were meant to appear in the film, but now the filmmaker says he’s going through the script and removing all trac...

A political strategist turned VC thinks Trump's war with Twitter and Facebook could have a silver lining for small startups trying to compete with the giants

Bradley Tusk, founder and CEO of Tusk Venture Partners, told Business Insider that President Trump's executive order targeting social media giants like Twitter and Facebook could create opportunities for smaller startups hoping to compete in the industry. The uncertainty surrounding Section 230's fate, legislation that currently protects social media platforms from retaliation from third-party content and is at the center of Thursday's Executive Order, may prove difficult for early startups to...

President Trump's clampdown on social media could hurt startups and cripple competition with Facebook and Twitter

President Donald Trump just signed an executive order that cracks down on social media companies, following Twitter's recent decision to add fact-check labels to two of his tweets. The order triggers a critical review of a federal law that currently allows online forums such as Twitter and Facebook to host third-party comments without being held liable for all that content, but also allows them to remove material they find objectionable. Trump directed the FCC, the FTC, and other government ag...

Bradley Tusk on starting a company and seed investing in the coronavirus era

Bradley Tusk has carved a unique path in the VC investment landscape: A longtime political and communications operative, he has built a track record for Tusk Ventures by going after highly regulated industries, rather than shying away from them. Whether it is ride-hailing, sports betting, cannabis or myriad other regulated sectors, Tusk takes the approach that laws are ultimately malleable, and if a service is popular, its users can mobilize to effect change. Given his unique perspective, it ...

The U.K. Has Officially Left the European Union. But Could Scotland End Up Back in It?

Although Britain officially left the European Union on Jan. 31, not everyone in the U.K. has given up on E.U. membership. British foreign secretary Dominic Raab condemned Tusk, who left his role in November, for encouraging “ sepa...

The inside tale of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ and ‘Tusk,’ according to producer Ken Caillat at NAMM 2020

Ken Caillat says he didn’t know who Fleetwood Mac were when he was initially hired by the band in the mid-’70s to mix a live recording for a radio show. But by the time he was done working with the band — having engineered and co-produced “Rumours,” “Tusk,” “Mirage,” and “Live” — he had so many stories to tell about Fleetwood Mac’s music and those who made it that he wrote a pair of books about those days.
