Rookie journeyman Jhonathan Diaz debuts in Angels’ loss to A’s

ANAHEIM ― On Aug. 9, 2013, the Boston Red Sox agreed to terms with four prospects from Latin America. One was an infielder named Rafael Devers. Another was a 16-year-old left-handed pitcher from Venezuela, Jhonathan Diaz. Diaz spent the next seven years in the Red Sox organization, never advancing beyond the Class-A level, sniffing a major league spring training game just twice. Last November, the Angels signed Diaz as a minor league free agent. Already in 2021, Diaz has fashioned a satisfying n...

Generation Canceled By HBO Max After Just One Season

Why can't we have nice things? Or at the very least, why can't they last longer? Earlier this year, we got a very nice thing in the form of the new HBO Max series "Generation" (stylized "Genera+ion"), an ensemble story about a group of high schoolers learning about life, love, and family in a conservative California community. For a grand total of 16 episodes (delivered in two eight-episode batches), "Generation" was pure, ambitious, chaotic fun. But now its time to bid the show an early goodbye...

Angels’ pitchers struggle in loss to White Sox

CHICAGO — A raft of injuries to the Angels’ pitchers have provided Packy Naughton an opportunity to prove that he belongs in the conversation for the 2022 pitching staff. He was making a strong statement until Tuesday night. Naughton gave up four runs and got knocked out in the third inning of the Angels’ 9-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox, a disappointing outing on the heels of five scoreless innings last week against the San Diego Padres. “Packy just wasn’t as sharp as he had been,” Manager Joe...

SF Book Review – Part 38: The Long Winter and Moar

I’m still catching up with recent SF reading and I figure it’s best to get this out before the Six Weeks of Halloween revs up. This post covers stuff I read from June right up until last week, so we’re pretty much caught up. Naturally, we’ll cover some horror books during the 6WH, so it may be a while before returning to SF proper. Anywho, let’s get to it: First up is the Long Winter Trilogy: Winter World, by A.G. Riddle – A new, inexplicable ice age has descended upon earth. Desperate...

The Tragedy & Liberation of Death

By Leo Babauta Last week, my brother was hit by an unimaginable tragedy: he lost his 3-month-old baby Tyler. I’m still in shock and heartbreak, coming to terms with it. My heart is broken for him, for all of our family, and for this terrible loss. I didn’t know Tyler, but as I begin to process this loss, I start to feel the loss of the future we won’t get to have together. Playing together, reading to him, riding bikes, throwing a ball around, having uncle-nephew talks out in nature. C...

Maxo Kream & Tyler, The Creator – “Big Persona”

In the past few years, it looked like Tyler, The Creator was moving on from rap, embracing strange new space-funk mutations. But on his recent album Call Me If You Get Lost, Tyler was back on his rap shit — so much so that he brought in DJ Drama to yell all over the record. Today, we learn that Tyler is still very much on his rap shit, and he’s got a new collaboration with the great Houston hard-rock storyteller Maxo Kream.

Angels’ Jo Adell impresses with new approach in return to majors

ANAHEIM — Jo Adell’s statistics don’t suggest he’s fully bounced back from the disappointing rookie season, but Joe Maddon’s eyes tell him something else. The Angels manager moved the second-year outfielder Adell into the cleanup spot Saturday night as a nod to what he felt was an impressive night at the plate in an otherwise quiet night for the Angels. Adell drew a walk and lined out twice Friday night as Padres righty Joe Musgrove shut out the Angels on three hits. “Jo Adell’s at-bats yesterda...

Marisa Anderson & William Tyler – “At The Edge Of The World”

Guitarists extraordinaire Marisa Anderson and William Tyler are releasing their collaborative album Lost Futures at the end of this week. Since they first announced the project five months ago with the release of the title track, Tyler contracted COVID-19 and had to cancel a run of shows with Steve Gunn. That was about a month ago, so hopefully if Tyler suffered symptoms, he’s feeling alright by now.

The US' involvement in Afghanistan makes one thing clear: we don't care about Afghan lives

Thousands try to flee Afghanistan after the Taliban takes control. Horror stories from 20 years of war in Afghanistan make clear that the US presence in the country only leads to death and destruction. Those calling for American forces to stay there are implicitly stating that the strategic interests of the US are more important than the victims of their policy. Ending this kind of dismissal of the humanity of American foreign policy victims is the first step in ending US wars. Eoin Higg...
