Determined to go: Labor Day travelers face closures, restrictions and delays

Scores of pandemic-weary Southern Californians will take to the highways and skies this Labor Day weekend, even as U.S. health officials implore those who haven’t been vaccinated to stay home. Even the vaccinated and those who are still wearing masks in public should consider the risks of coronavirus exposure, Rochelle Walensky, director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said earlier this week. Warnings aside, an estimated 43 million Americans will hit the road over the holiday...

Caldor Fire: Why Lake Tahoe’s forests face so much fire danger

But the conditions that led to the evacuation of more than 50,000 people around the famed alpine lake’s south and western shores — where embers rain down on rustic communities and soot chokes the normally pristine mountain air — didn’t spring up this week, this month or this ye...

Why it takes months to subdue some wildfires

By KEITH RIDLER | The Associated Press BOISE, Idaho — At nearly every community meeting on firefighting efforts in the U.S. West, residents want to know why crews don’t simply put out the flames to save their homes and the valuable forests surrounding them. It’s not that simple, wildfire managers say, and the reasons are many, some of them decades in the making and tied to climate change. The cumulative result has been an increase in gigantic wildfires with extreme and unpredictable behavior thr...
